There are also Loading Asset FPS Drops which aren't related to your System's Raw Power as well as the Autosave FPS Drops and i'm using Expensive Nvme. Shader Cache or Memory Related Shit sometimes. You have to know the Source, it's not always just because you have a 5000$ or 1$ GPU. The worst Piece of Shit Games developed in Modern Era usually put all the Tax on the CPU only and use 1 Core. Japanese Game Ports were always infamous for that. Unity Shitgine also rapes your CPU to Death.

      I was on the exact same situation when I started playing, and I tell you: If there's an explosion or something that blasts a ton of effects at once, it WILL FREEZE the game. (At least for me on my Acer Aspire 3 with an AMD Ryzen 3 3250U)
      However, when there's nothing blowing up, it'll keep a nice 80-120 FPS on smaller maps. If you haven't tried it yet, be wary of those hard freezes - Especially on high difficulties, you will get melted by the bots before your game decides to give you a chance.
      Pro Tip from a fellow Shitbox Computer user: Go to the settings screen and set the Decals' configuration to OFF. Your game might still freeze with an explosion or a ton of effects, but it'll happen FAR LESS often that even on the lowest setting that is still On. You can also abuse the Pause button to keep some situational awareness even while the game is freezing.

I would imagine using GZDoom cut them a lot of the hassle during level design and programming.

    • @marscaleb
      @marscaleb Před 2 měsíci +3

      Speaking as someone who builds games in Unity but also has a history of modding Doom and Duke, Let me help clarify this for you.
      Had they created this game in Unity, they would currently not have as much that was playable and ready now.
      The developers were already familiar with using GZDoom, so they saved a lot of time that would have been spent learning the new engine.
      GZDoom already provided the base gameplay elements, so they saved a lot of time that would have been spent creating these.
      GZDoom already has been thoroughly tested and debugged, so they saved a lot of time with debugging all the elements they added into the game.
      DoomBuilder is a simple and flexible level builder with an intuitive 2D-based interface that makes 90% of a level's design easy to create, test, and iterate, so they saved a lot of time with building the levels.
      And had they gone with a newer engine the advantage would be... Well, it would be easier to port the game to consoles. And that's it. There is really no other advantage they could have gained from making a game like this within Unity. Everything you see here could have been made in Unity, but it would have taken longer to get to this point. And there's really nothing that this games lacks that could have been improved by using Unity. Unless you just really want to play it on your PS5, I suppose.

    • @marscaleb
      @marscaleb Před 2 měsíci +3

      To give some more details to my earlier post, let me describe some of what I go through as a Unity developer.
      Just earlier this year I started putting together a retro-style FPS to test an idea I had. When I first opened up Unity, I had no pre-existing code to use for my gameplay. I had to build (from the ground up) things like how to have a character move, how to have a character not move through walls or floors. And even once that was done, I had the camera running incredibly jittery whenever I turned. Now I've been working with Unity for several years now, so I understood these things and it wasn't hard. But I know full well how time consuming it was to learn these basic elements back when I was new, and how easy it was to miss simple things that I didn't understand.
      But on the other hand, when I try to make a Doom mod, the game already runs. I literally already have a working FPS with everything I need, and I can right away start making levels, textures, sprites, etc.
      Now you might point out that you can get templates and packages form the Asset Store, so rather than building something from scratch I can get a basic FPS put into my Unity game right from the get-go. Yes this is true, and I have used such assets before. But many of these pre-made systems don't work "exactly" the way you want them, and require tooling, learning, and modding to get right. And sure, the same could be said of GZDoom, but I promise you that GZDoom has FAR more community support and documentation than you will get from ANY asset on the asset store. If something you get from the Asset Store doesn't work out-of-the-box exactly the way you want, half the time it is actually easier to build the thing from the ground up so you have direct control over it. (Assuming you have the programming ability to do so.)
      And even when you do get an asset that works the way you want, it won't be a complete game. You will need to get other assets to complete the system. You don't just need a FPS controller, you need enemies with enemy AI, you need weapon pickups and inventory management, you need weapon systems, you need menus and UI, and you need a system to save your game, you need need a way to retain persistent changes to your levels when you change scenes, and the list just goes on.
      Yes you can buy all these from the asset store, but they are not all guaranteed to work well with each other. I have a particular project that I built extensively using assets I purchased from the store, and as I put them all together, things would break. There were scripts that tried to stablish namespaces that were already used by other assets, and even by loading in something that was just a 3D model I could have it cause a conflict with another asset because it came with additional scripts or shaders that didn't play nice with what I already had. I can't even fathom what kind of problems I could have with save files and inventory systems if I hadn't decided to build those things myself.
      Buying all your packages from the Asset Store can easily result in spending a LOT of time debugging and fixing things, all just to get a system that works maybe sort-of like what you really want.
      But if I pick up GZDoom, all that stuff already works and works together. All those systems already function in GZDoom. and the expansions that they added, like sliding and more complex inventory and all such things, well they've already been done too, and in the Doom modding community there are plenty of people who know how to do those things that can help you implement them.
      Good luck finding someone who knows how to get two systems made by completely different people to work together.
      And it's also worth pointing out that Unity (and especially Unreal) is a real pain to use if you want something that looks like this. If you want to have sprite-based weapons and enemies in a 3D world, yes it is possible, but boy howdy it ain't easy. You have to build all kinds of things from scratch, and accept a laundry list of concessions you have to make that just won't work right without taking a performance hit. I speak from experience. So if you wanted to build a game like this in Unity or Unreal, you're going to be better off using actual 3D models for everything, which changes the aesthetic, requires different artistry (and possibly a different team of artists,) and ultimately creates a different vibe. It may not necessarily be a bad thing, but it might not be exactly what you want to make, and may not be what your team is good at. If you wanted a game to look exactly like Selaco, it will work better with GZDoom than with Unity.
