If John was not there, the sound would be a lot thinner/ sparser, if he was less dynamic but heavier sounding the songs would plod along regardless of what the drummer was playing.

Spike Edney played with Queen since 1984 and still plays with him to this day. He's exceptional on the keys and rhythm guitar, I see nothing wrong with him being up front for this song.
