  • With efforts beginning in 1940 to mount an anti-tank gun on a suitable vehicle chassis, trial and error through prototypes led to the final production of the M10 3 in. Gun Motor Carriage which started rolling off the line in late 1942. About 5000 were made and it saw service through to the end of the war in Europe and saw limited success in the Pacific theater. Through the US lend-lease program, Britain, the Red Army, and Free French Army also received and employed the M10. It saw service with Egypt post-WWII and with Israel as well.
    Weighing in at nearly 30 tons, it was manned by a crew of 4. Powered by a GM 6046 375 hp diesel engine, it could reach a top speed of 32 mph (51 kph) and had a range of 186 miles (300 km). It was armed with a 3 in (76.2mm) M7 main cannon and a Browning M2HB .50 cal machine gun.
    There isn't any recorded evidence of either US or British armies having called the M10 by 'Wolverine' during WWII, but it became widely known with this moniker from the 1970's on.
    This vehicle resides in the workshop at the National Armor and Cavalry Collection at Ft. Benning, GA. Connect with NACC here: / nationalarmorandcavalr...

    The M-10 is my favorite WW-2 US armor vehicles, I think it’s because of Audie Murphy.

    My grandfather served on one of these during WWII, he didn't like to talk about it. But the one story he did tell me about was when his unit went against a King Tiger and that the first shot bounced right off the turret. Then the squad focus fired with multiple M10's and turned into a smoke heap. I couldn't even imagine how brutal tank combat was compared to our tanks now where engagements last not even 15 to 30 seconds depending on the experience of the tank crews.

      Not the same tail light. That unit was standard on US vehicles during he war , eventually being replaced after Korea (a matching blackout driving version goes on the passenger side). Guide was the main manufacturer, but there were a couple others.

    I wonder how it would look with torsion bar suspension and track extenders? They were vulnerable to potato mashers thrown from second floor windows into the open topped turrets. Later in the war many were modified with sheet metal roof to prevent that.

    Tanks are cool but I always felt like they were rollin coffins. The M10 was what my grandpa was on in WW2. He was the crew chief engineer. He went to get parts for his tank somewhere in France and his tank was hit by a German (possibly American friendly fire) attack plane killed his whole crew in front of his eyes. When i went into the military he told me NEVER be on tanks! Probably a good idea. Im glad to see the Marine Corps is gettin rid of them. Easy targets... Especially when you go against a real enemy like the Germans. They were NO JOKE!

    Wolverine .... outdated at arrival, too vulnerable ... just a single 8.8 and the last and the first tank will be stopped. Happened in Paderborn

    • @publiusscipio5697
      @publiusscipio5697 Před 5 lety +7

      typxxilps ? Ok, so by that same logic the t34 was outdated and too vulnerable. A single 8.8 and that would cook too. Almost every tank would, that’s not the best thing to cite for a vehicle’s effectiveness.
      If what you mean is that I could go through multiple vehicles then maybe, but also don’t forget that the m10 was a tank destroyer not a “main battle tank” (though yes I know they didn’t use the term yet) so it wasn’t expected to be used in the same capacity as a Sherman, t34, or Cromwell. Also isn’t it funny how it’s replacement had even less armor, so the ordinance department, and the general in charge of the tank destroyer branch would seem to disagree with the fact that the td couldn’t stop a 88mm as making the vehicle outdated or too vulnerable.

    • @SonsOfLorgar
      @SonsOfLorgar Před 5 lety +7

      If armor designed against small armd makes something outdated in your definitions, you obviously don't know shit about IRL combat doctrines or practice and should go back to school before making ignorant shitposts about vehicle designs you have nothing but game-based delusions about.

    • @CharlesvanDijk-ir6bl
      @CharlesvanDijk-ir6bl Před 5 lety

      Once spotted any tank takes out an 88 mm position. It was not too hard to spot because of the high profile. TD's live on by APC's and Combat vehicles mounting AT Systems. I know the M113 APC you find a position before you engage anything CCC Cover Concealment and Camouflage I imagine the same goes for WW 2 TD's.

    You get the opportunity to get into these museums, and to show these amazing vehicles close up and personal. And then you waste it on simple hand-camera-paning and annoyingly loud irritating action music? Learn to direct and edit filming! It would be so much better to have you in picture, talking about what we are seeing. Or at least hear you talking. Share your expertise. We need a break from all these old farts talking about military vehicles, bring in the young, and the women (I love those old farts, don't get me wrong). And having cuts, and using the camera like a camera, not a Go-Pro. Learn from Chieftain, or The Tank Museum.
