Many mistakes were done... I had similar situation, flying too far out over the water, but managed to come back.
Here are few tips:
- Turn off recording (will preserve battery)
- Turn off RTH (fly manually without increasing altitude)
- Point camera straight, not down (will help with aerodynamics)
- Turn on Sport mode (will be flying faster)
- Fly at low altitudes (less wind = less resistance = less battery used)
- Fly to nearest land and pickup drone from there using the GPS coordianates
Great analysis Dima, thank you for sharing your knowledge and teaching me for proper procedures,itâs a great help to us newbie, appreciate it,my salute to you â€ïžđđŒ
And to add - flying over water / the ocean, you will ALWAYS have the wind blowing much harder one direction than the other. If the wind is at your back when you are heading out to sea, always remember it will be at your FRONT on the way home and MUCH harder for the drone to fly back. You MAY use 50% battery getting from point A to B, but B to A will end up requiring closer to 70% remaining battery to fight the wind as well as the distance.
@@mikeberry1168 thank you so much mikeâŠIâm more knowledgeable because of youâŠthe best commentsâŠmuch appreciated đđŒkeep sharing â€ïž
Battery efficiency is worse when you drain higher current from it in S mode. Unless you must fight strong wind it is better to fly in P and take longer to return. You want it to come back. Not come fast but not make it. How efficiently you can propel forward with available juice left is what determines the distance you can travel. Agree with the rest of the tips.
Thanks for the tip! I'd have said just turn off recording mode and don't fly so much into the water without the chance off getting it out of there. I've seen floating devices for DJI , so it can stay afloat. But I have zero experience and I am looking and learning from the mistakes of others. (Sorry SonicDrone) And sorry for the loss....of the drone.

Hey, from what I know, best way to return home in situations like that is stop recording, open up the google maps and go into sports mode, sports mode handles higher winds better, lower altitude + sports mode with the map on instead of the camera view, the map shows a straight line to the home point you can follow.
hi Badazzle, very informative you shared it to me, now i can tell ill be a good pilot bcoz of u, appreciate it much..thank u

That is a great tip! I would never think of looking at the map. Silly me I look at the distance shown on the screen if its coming closer to me.
I am expecting to have one deliver soon. For beginners. What is the farthest distance i can go. 100 feet? 4000 meters seems so far for such a little drone.
@@lucyc1077 it can operate up to 10km
Two mistakes: you were in ânormalâ mode, as soon as you realized there might be an issue, you should have switched to sports mode, probably around the 60% mark. Secondly, get that drone down! You always have a better chance of avoiding winds closer to the ground, you should have been about 30m off the water
Brother, I agree about descending the drone, but I am not sure if switching to the sport mode helps, maybe returning manually the drone while descending I guess, but maybe you are right, but fore sure, to many mistakes, pilot faults

hi Anthony Garza, yeah right, watching the video send different emotions, thank you appreciate it
It was just plain stupid. You can continue to push it even with forced landing mode. You can also make it hold altitude by pushing left stick up. He should have drop the altitude to avoid strong winds, continue to push it back manually and not let land. It can still go for about 1 km after 0% battery. My condolences, but my brother, totally responsibility of the pilot what happened. Too many mistakes together that over drained the battery. In the end the most serious thing, when it was fighting in its last breath, I perceive that you panicked and instead of continuing the drone movement forward and lowering altitude, what you did was go up more. Poor Mini fought enough to live

Really sorry you lost your Mini 2!!
BUT you made some critical errors that hopefully you'll learn from!
1st- You over estimated the capability of your drone.
2nd- You're flying way too high at 120m the wind is a lot stronger than at sea level, this reduces your speed and drains your battery quickly!! You hardly got 15 nins flight time before you hit critical battery!
3rd- ALWAYS fly into the wind on long distance flights, that way you have the wind helping you back when you're battery is low. I noticed you were hitting 10m/s going out but hardly hitting 6.9-7.9m/s coming home, sometimes as low as 6m/s, so you were flying into a strong wind coming back!đź
4th When you hit critical battery at 5% it starts to auto land BUT you can continue flying, pitch forward and keep your altitude steady with the other stick, that way you can continue flying to 0% I think you might have made it just if you did that!
If you had cancelled RTH hit sport mode and reduced your altitude to 35m you would have easily made it with 20% battery spare!đđ
One thing I have noticed about the Mini 2 Lipo battery is once it hits 20% the battery drains a lot quicker than my Mavic Mini Lithium ion battery!! I get around 21 mins 30 seconds flight time from 100% to the beeping low battery warning at 20%, I fly around 30-40m altitude max above that it can be very windy even on a calm day!
hi PD Tech, wow i like the way you explain it to me my error...i learned so much in your advices and knowledge...please don't stop sharing your knowledge...i appreciate it ...i'll be a better pilot next time because of you.thank you
I agree with all of your points - excellent analysis btw..but Iâm thinking sport mode would have been a bad choice, i would think it would still be more efficient to use normal mode? Or does sport mode not chew much more power than normal mode?
@@RoyTheKing241 Sport mode does use more power, so will drain your battery slightly quicker!
BUT the main point here is the altitude, wind speed at 120m is going to be far more than say dropping down to 35m above sea level. Wind speed also impacts battery life, look how little total flight time this was 15 mins down to critical battery!!
So dropping altitude on the return journey in conjunction with sport mode, I think he would have made it!
You can see the speed in m/s was greatly reduced on the return journey so he was flying into a strong headwind. For maximum battery efficiency, you really want the wind helping you fly home because the last 50% battery will drain a lot quicker than the first 50% of a lipo!! đđ

I know itâs been a year ago but I just saw your video and wanted to drop a comment. Iâm really sorry that you lost your drone. đą I did have similar situation, but luckily I did manage to reach the shore in the last seconds. But because of that I know exactly how you felt when you saw this forced landing alert. Hands shaking, heart beating faster than you think is possible and the feeling of panic.
I flew like 2 km away from the shore and when started RTH I had 60% battery so I thought there wonât be any problems (considering it only took 20% to reach that point). But the wind did its thing and my drone started forced landing procedure 500 meters away from the shore. In panic I was trying to cancel it so it took me like 2 minutes before I realised I can still control the drone (I knew that obviously, I read the manual, but in such situations you just forget everything) so I managed to reach the shore literally 10 seconds before it was too late but the drone landed 400 meters from the place where I was. I remember running to find it hoping it really landed on the beach not in the water. I used find my drone feature and found my little mini 2. But there was a moment I thought I would have to go back home without it, knowing it drowned in the sea and it was a horrible feeling considering the fact that I had it for like 2 weeks at that time. Thatâs why I know exactly how you felt and Iâm so sorry that you lost your mini 2. Thank you for sharing this video. Thanks to that and many comments from experienced pilots we beginners all learned a lot. Unfortunately, you learned your lesson the hard way but you posted your video to warn other beginner pilots and for that we all thank you. Iâm sending lots of fellow drone pilot support, hope youâre doing well and that you wonât quit flying. đ
Not sure he lost the drone look at the boat heading right for the drone in the video near the end you can see it slows down right under it. Could just be a fake video to get views.
Possible alternatives to save your drone: -have landed on the island that you had on your right side when you returned. At least you would have had a chance to go on a boat. Put it in Sport mode and have tried to return as quickly as possible to a lower altitude. Although I do not know how effective this option would have been due to the battery consumption in this mode. You learn from mistakes and although it is very painful to lose a drone, many things have to be put into practice. Greetings and thanks for sharing your experience.
I would have just flipped it into spot mode and landed on the bay area to the left. For those who dont know sport mode doesnt actually drain your battery as fast as you think. The max battery efficiency is going 12.4 meters per second.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge,im in panic mode don't know what to do,hard lesson
The ship's bows pointing to shore was a clue: the wind was blowing out to sea. It was always going to take longer to return than to go out.

hi john, yeah right?.. just a plain simple video footage, that breaks a Heart..appreciate it..thank you
I just had to chime in about the surprising number of well intentioned but poor advisory comments to activate sport mode. NEVER do this when battery life is in question, even fighting the wind. Try it for yourself, fly 1000m in N-mode and you'll use about 7% battery. Then fly it 1000m in S-mode and you'll use over 10% battery. DJI drones fly at their most efficient speed in return to home mode, and N-mode is closest to that speed. You'll notice that switching to S-mode when you're flying into the wind doesn't change the speed at all. This is because the drone already wasn't able to reach the set speed of N-mode at maximum power. Saying you should switch to sport mode to make it home faster is just like saying you should drive your car at full throttle to save fuel.
When the drone switches to emergency landing at 10% it automatically stops and hovers there. If you're holding forward on the stick it will just hover there. But let go of the stick and push forward again, and you'll continue forward at normal speed. Never forget this, you can get 1000m or more before it actually lands. Always watch your speed. You might have made it to the breakwater for emergency landing. You have to do the same thing with the stick when you cancel return to home mode or it will just hover there.
I have had a dozen or so flights where I didn't make it back due to insufficient battery power but I've recovered each one. I even had one get blown 3km away and I lost connection when it was still 200m high. It took 5 hours to find it using a large grid search in thick forest and 2 feet of snow. Most of my flights are survey and inspection flights over infrastructure surrounded by thick forest. The nature of the work means that 90% of the flights are like a full range test. My preferred way to bring a drone back from far out is to hit return to home, and then drop the altitude to the point that it disconnects from the remote. It will reconnect a minute or two later when the drone gets closer, then I drop the altitude again until it disconnects, etc. This is to keep it low to the trees where there is less wind. There may or may not be less wind low to the ocean. You'll have to experiment with your next drone to find what works best. I've also had to change course +or- 45° and zig-zag the drone back to me and shield from the wind using the terrain. Sometimes DJI puts out firmware updates that absolutely neuter a drone's ability to fight the wind and it will just come to a stop against wind that it used to travel full speed. So honestly I would suggest not ever updating the firmware on any dji drone.
If you tap on the small map icon on the bottom left, you can cycle through to a small telemetry display that actually shows the angle at which the drone is flying. You can tell when the drone is flying with/against/or perpendicular to the wind by looking at this telemetry. Always watch that telemetry and your speed to help judge how hard or easy it will be to get the drone back to where you want it.
During your flight planning, check the wind conditions for the altitude you plan to fly with an app like UAV Forecast.
A mini 2 actually has enough power to lift a second mini 2. If you land or crash somewhere you cannot reach, you can use a properly sized treble hook for fishing, and a piece of fishing line tied to a second mini 2 or any larger drone to retrieve your drone by hooking one of the arms. This is provided your drone is not too far away, because the rescue drone will burn through battery rapidly while lifting a second drone.
So much to learn from your comments⊠appreciate it.. I feel i had 101 lessons from my professional drone pilot
Range test, over water with high wind for the drone to fight all the way back. recipe for disaster.

@@danbelick yeah,lessons for the rookies đ„
I did some tests with my Mini 2. In sports mode, the drone can continue flying for almost 2-minutes after the battery reaches 0%, if you over-ride the forced-landing. The down-side is that it just falls out of the sky instead trying to land once it's out of juice.
Thank you for sharing your experience, it helps me alot to be a better drone pilot, appreciate it kenđđŒ
I thought it was very interesting how much battery power the drone seemed to have even after zero, makes me wonder if you had manually flown the drone home and lowered altitude to say 20m how close you would of got to bring home

I lost my Mini 2 in the ocean last month. Very similar. Keep flying!
High five đđœ .....weâll soar again đđŒ, you too..fly high đ
A tip my friend, if you are going to risk those range tests , donât turn your drone around to return , just reverse the drone without turning, you move your antennas on the drone to a very bad orientation for receiving signal when you are out really far like that. DJI drones fly the same forward or reverse, turn around when you have a full signal indicated. Good luck.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge my friend, very useful information, appreciate it â€ïž
put your drone into sport mode and keep pushing forward/upward to ignore the first auto landing. It can go really far even at 0% Battery
OMG !! I feel for you ! So so sad! I did the 3K above the ocean seven months ago and I had a gimbal reset right in the middle of it at that time I thought it was just falling from the sky hopefully I managed to get it back but remember how stressed out I was. Canât imagine how sad you were
yeah as in...go home with my shoulders down, my buddy didn't make Home with me, it takes while to get over, huhuhu, thank you
like most of the comments say, ill say my own opinion too because i saw many faults, though i'm aware it's an old video.
-don't do range tests over water. anything can happen, from bird strikes all the way to drone failures and low battery, and there's nowhere to land.
-you're having headwind in the return. ALWAYS check wind and weather currents over your area for a range test because that's a major mistake people make and lose their drones after return. if you see higher than normal remaining battery once you take off which is true in this video, it means you're having a wind current from the back.
-don't do aerial shots from far away. don't do this if you're further than 1,000 meters, especially with boats and ships. get there yourself.
-in the case of emergency such as low battery, stop recording and don't take any pictures, and do NOT gain height unless it's very necessary for signal.
-dji drones can last for a few mins with 0% battery, possibly 3 or 4 mins till they finally shut off. use this as an indicator to return safely. do NOT let dji's auto landing if you're close to return, keep rising the drone when it's lowering cause of that. rather push the drone till its absolute limits instead of letting it go into the water.
-check laws and local regulations. somebody from my apartment questioned me about flying the drone directly from the porch. so make sure that. not a good idea flying over ships, especially directly above the fumes and limit flying above 120 meters if you're in busy areas.
hope it helped.
Thank you for posting this. Itâs valuable information as these types of situations can happen to anyone!
Very true
That was sad, only those who love to fly know the pain of losing a drone. My condolences. đą

Such a shame , when you we're coming back I would have lowered the altitude a lot because you were fighting the wind all the way , you may have been able to get back and I don't know if you know, when in return to home push the stick forward to increase speed . I know it's easy giving advice after the crash but I hope you can get another drone and fly again đ
hi Mr Red, i just bought my dji mini 2 with no idea to fly....pure beginner , i just learned it now on how to fly but my drone is gone, huhu..i learned in the hard way..thank you, appreciate it
Thanks for sharing it đđŒ I learned a lot with you and the otherâs comments.
Yeah right,?I learned a lot too all the comments worth reading ,thank you appreciate it đđŒ
I learned that apart from range & altitude, I needed to have a full sense of wind direction and speeds at various altitude.. fly into (against) the wind and you'll have far better chance of returning home. Fly with it and a lot of times, I would need to go into sports mode upon return, lowering altitude immediately, perform diving to close distances, emergency landing procedures, etc.. There were an island and incoming cruise ships you could have landed on. Droning is very technical. Best to arrive on site and expect not to fly.. until all the take off checks are done. Sometimes it's a case of Flychopath vs garden-variety Psychopaths with extreme delusions of control soiling the 4K bandwidth. Technical sides, I had battery installation errors after a tiny grain of sand got into the contacts.. good to have a toothbrush handy.
Yeah, very well said Robert, thank you for sharing your thoughts appreciate it, I feel Iâm a better pilot next time because of you đđŒ
This is excellent advice - better to be on the ground wishing you were flying than flying wishing you were on the ground.
Been in similar situations, always lower altitude, makes a big difference.

Seriously. Every inch of my being is screaming no when I go a few hundred feet over water. Who does a range test over open water..... must have a money tree đ
hi... sorry i got you carried away, much tears in me coz, i don't have money tree to buy another one, huhu.. i lost my drone but still paying my installment plan, huhu, lol
Do not use RTH when you are far from home if you operate manually the drone you can arrive home point easly because RTH is very slow its not all about the wind
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your comments is the Best thing to doâ€ïž appreciate it,keep sharing đđŒ
Facing the wind in order to have a push on the way back is the key. You were about 10km/h slower on your way back, which is a distance of like 1.6 km during a 10 minutes of a RTH. But also, the battery would last much longer with the wind on the back; less electrical power needed for a same given speed. I think an altitude of 10m on the way back could have saved it since it's also much more weak near the surface. Damn it sucks man, sorry :/ edit: wow I'm an idiot, I should have read the comments before typing this, it was all said already hahah ... but knowing that 10km/h for 10 mins is almost 2km on the way back won't hurt :P
lol, its fine man, i appreciate your effort for sharing your knowledge too..thats helps to to be a better pilot next time, thank you
This made me cry đ rip baby 2..
sorry you got carried away, with the video.... Me too, appreciate it thank you
On Sea far outside is alwys much more wind than near the coast (i am windsurfer) , always because its flat. So the returnig takes much more engergy to struggle against the wind.

A few things.....you need to fly at a lower altitude if the wind is too strong.....also this is why I decided to buy the air 2 instead of the mini 2, the air 2 is faster and can handle greater wind.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge appreciate it,yeah air 2 is the best..â€ïž
Seeing how you encountered headwinds on your way back, I would have landed it on that square shaped island on the right 10:37. At least you could come back later on to pick it up by boat or something.
There are plenty of people willing to help in those scenarios. :C
Your right,. I didn't think that before because im on panic mode.. newbie experience... your comments is the best option when it comes like this situation, appreciate itâ€ïž i will next timeđ thank you Diego
@@AviationDrone_75 u are really a risk taker. Beginner shouldn't try flying above water. Watching youtube videos for education should have saved your money. Hi jheboyDOTca, that's a good advice didn't know if I did, because i was in the panic mode, my hands are shaking at that moment the drone starting to decent, huhu
The wind is the reason. Of course pilot should know that but if we have a problem with high wind, go down as much possible. In lower part of sky wind is slower. Don't use RTH, switch to Sport mode (if have) and back manually.
This so bad story my friend đ Maybe there was a strong wind and it prevented it from turningđź

Sad AF, like when they took the matrix out of prime đ„Č
Thank you for watching, appreciate itâ€ïž
Ok I read a lot of comments and it was the wind, but if Iâm honest I would expect that the drone calculate it with the wind as well.
So why they donât do something like this: when the drones goes up like 100m then stay still for 60sek maybe to check how strong the wind is, and then calculate if the way is âwithâ the wind or against, so the System can calculate the way home right.
I mean just looking at the numbers, 70% I would expect that the drone can do it as well.
your right, 70 percent return home, can make it , don't know why?
the wind was clearly the reason here as I can see, did you feel the wind? Or was it a regular day?
But this is a problem where many people wouldnât think about it, I mean if you have 70% this should be enough in every armature mind, if I need like 30% to get there, 70% will be enough to get back - even if itâs windy.
But I donât know how the wind doesnât count for the âcome to homeâ situations? I mean if you build a system like this, the system should calculate with the wind, because no one who is new in this topic, would have concerns if you see 70% on you screen.
Maybe the height in the option menu was to high?
It would be really good to know how windy it was that day, do you have any informations about the day? Or maybe ask a service about the wind speeds that day? I have problems understanding it, even if I know that wind can be a killer, but if the wind donât count at all for the calculation of âcome to homeâ - then DJI should upgrade this and should warn people more about this problem, that they have to count different at a certain wind speed.
Great Idea Amar, it would be BEST, DJI will add on this features to the drone system
you should have used the island to land. would have been a better grave than the ocean with a small chance to get it back.
yeah, pilot error,huhu
I woulda landed on the moving boat lol

Good point as I ALWAYS monitor the wind speed AND direction making sure to fly against the wind if flying over 2km away and surf with the wind when returning. I noticed your speed was 9-10 m/s flying out and it dropped to only 6 m/s and less while returning. The little drone may be able to withstand condition 5 winds however the higher if flies the winds has a greater influence. Maybe if you had dropped to a lower altitude and used sport mode it may have made a difference. However don't be discouraged my friend as we all learn from our mistakes. I hope there will be a next time for you to enjoy this wonderful hobby of flight.
