Restored from the game's original source files (thanks Marius Winter!), here are all five unused close-up cutscenes from the game. The first of these was never used at all, while the remaining four are technically in the game - just without the closeup art and animations! - Hry
Dang, 30 years later and there's still cool stuff I didn't know about this amazing game.
This is amazing!
LeChuck was much scarier than in the original fortress scenes.
The atmosphere and feeling of these games was so mysterious... this is an amazing piece of videogame history.
it's because you played it as a 10 or 12 y.o. kid.
applies to everything really.
I disagree more than I agree, I see your point, but I didn't see this video until now and I am still very impressed by the atmosphere, yeah, when you are a kid everything seems bigger than it is, but for example, Michael Keaton's Batman or Ford's Blade Runner are still unmatched to me in terms of atmosphere and I saw them when I was almost 30.
@@xl000 That's bullshit. I frequently confront stuff from my childhood with a grown-up vision. Some I found to be meh, but the good ones always amaze me by being as still as enjoyable as they were when I first discovered them. Such is Monkey Island.
The good stuff has a quality that pass the test of time, and does not need the nostalgia factor one bit.
@@ericbarzman the bar is lower when you're 10 y.o. Sure Monkey Island was innovative at that time
@@elfo7 Michael Keaton's Batman, right? With the music of Danny Elfman. It creates a special atmosphere that is difficult to describe and that... just isn't there in the other installments.
Jesus christ, I was already terrified of LeChuck as a kid, (needed a buddy to help me complete the game because as an 11 year-old I couldn't handle having him chase me in the tunnels) these would have traumatised me even more.
Yeah that used to take me by surprise back then too.
Shit I still have nightmares with that part of the game
you should have played Alone in The dark then... Much more relaxing game..
@@xl000 Pure trauma
This is such a cool find.
A few years ago I noticed the dialogue from that unused cutscene in the game's script. Clearly the art was cut to save space, but I wonder if the lines were cut because they gave away too much about the ending? (i.e. something buried beneath the "treasure")
Won't sleep tonight.
This is great! I recently played MI2 again after some years and I truly felt that when Lechuck first appears, it was lacking of emotion an intensity. With this footage I see that the original plan was to give him the space his entrance deserved, too bad they left it out. Thanks for sharing!
This is the coolest thing I've seen in a while. To think there would be such amazing secrets buried in the source code of my favorite game ever... Thank you for uploading this!!
the perspectives used in those games are just crazy beautiful!
Lechuck looks very creepy
I'm freaking out. This is so great to see!!!
I can see why the visuals were cut - it takes a lot of the mystery out of Zombie LeChuck.
Ehr...no. they were cut to save space on floppy disks.
I wonder if Largo LaGrande and Larry Laffer are relatives.
"Lafayette Lawrence the pirate"
Someone's gotta code these cutscenes into the game, it would be absolutely amazing! ❤
Not sure what to think of these. Some aspects are good-looking but it feels rough around the edges and too different to the rest of the game..
There is something very anime about that third scene. I don't know what. Perhaps it is the angle, of Captain LeChuck's face, and in relation to his terrifyingly and comically oversized skeleton throne.
That’s true!
4:42 "Yawn"
That caught me off-guard. :D
Why? It’s in the original game as well.
@@spavaai Because I hadn't played the game in years and didn't remember.
*yawn*
These unused scenes look awesome. I really wonder why Lucas did not use them.
A few of these shots draw attention to the dead bird LeChuck has in place of feathers in his hat, something I never really noticed in the vanilla game.
They didn't have enough space, it's difficult to understand this now cause we don't have this kind of problems with digital dowloads but in the 90s this game was huge and required 11 floppy disks, if you look online you will se that they've cut even some beautiful art of the underground tunnels
I actually think that while creepy it makes lechuck look more human
I'm used to him having more dark eyes, not these big bulging ones
Incredible!!!
Awesome :0
Heeeyy, nice to see you lot around here, Matt Zion and Chris Wreckless and the rest!
Is it possible to have these versions of the scenes trigger in-game instead, considering the timing is the same and they appear completely finished?
Amazing!
Nice to see but I didn’t like Largo’s drawing... so much of his pants taking up the screen.
Been replaying the entire series again before I saw this. Nearly finished with the 4th game and it’s the episodic part 5 next.
Muy bueno!
Why did they cut out those scenes? They are amazing!
probably filesize. Most of the dialogue, or near analogues, are retained in the cut scenes that remain in the game.
Kind of a shame they didn't bring them back for when the game was released on CD, though, especially since Monkey 2 appeared to be virtually untouched for the CD re-release, unlike Monkey 1 which had new CD audio.
Wow, never seen those! I didn't like Turner's art on this game, never did it for me. The fisherman, for instance, ugh...
So why’d they cut out these close ups? Probably a little too scary for kids?
Probably to save disc space.
@@ShyGuyXXL I didn’t think that could take up disc space
@@patrickwilson1459 Where else would the graphics be saved? Graphics took up a lot of room, much more than dialog, for example. You should watch this stream, they talk a lot about this stuff. Very interesting: czcams.com/video/ikaqus5_QIg/video.html
@@ShyGuyXXL Yeah, I’ve watched that it was great. Besides even after seeing those close ups I didn’t see the point of them so I’m glad they cut those out.
The site reads like the scenes were shipped in the game data but disabled in code. The production quality is poor. It looks like a placeholder implementation.
I am glad they didn't include this , doesnt look good at all
