I love when bands do covers of popular or famous songs in their own style. The original song is more of a victory theme of someone breaking free of a bad relationship, while Cake's version is more of a bitter "Fuck you and everything you stand for" kind of song.
Agreed! That is the EXACT difference between the songs. Just classify it as the Black version and the White version. A Black woman singing this is Testifying as to her freedom. Cake's vocals are not convincing - at least not to many Black people, but it's cool as a country/rock version. But better? If you want to go by instrumentation, it's got more going on, but then disco was not about instrumentation (well, that's not right, either, but lets let that go for now...). The best disco was killer singing and a killer beat to dance to. This version would have me tappin' my toes, but not shakin' my booty.
Just like a monotone, dry professor giving a lecture about desert sand. You will get information without the strength of the original wind that eroded rocks to put it there.

Great thing about CAKE, besides their wildly inventive, quirky tunes and borrowing from and superbly blending so many musical genres is that their songs so often tell a story with a storyline arc. such a great pick me up after what felt like the biggest breakup heartbreak ever. But this helps. So much strong hope and forceful statements. I love it.
this is bound to never be seen but it surprises me how i actually like how this cover saps out the triumphance of the original. theyre not thriving like the singer of the source song, the cover shows that the singer is getting by rather than living at their peak. they are surviving
I just can't describe the feeling this song gives to me. I used to listen this last summer with my friends in sunny weather just enjoying the moment. Brings back the joy of the memories.
Love their deadpan take on this great song, the really nice bass and guitar 💛 Beautiful. The soft guitar part almost makes me a little teary eyed sometimes
I've seen some people complain about it, but I kinda like the slightly offbeat, sluggish vocals. Gives it a touch of a 'can't care enough in a good way' vibe.

Bass line, guitar and trumpet just killed it. Bought the album because of this song and all the tracks stand out. Style that can't be duplicated
His monotone, emotionless voice is awesome for some reason.

The song absolutely nails that

I'm not a fan of cover songs but this one is so unique.
+efedude77 I'm just the opposite. I LOVE cover songs. For one thing: a unique arrangement can bring a fresh perspective to a song.
it's one of those few covers that doesn't suck and makes Cake seem better because of how often bands botch a cover

Uno de los mejores cover que he escuchado, saludos desde Chile.
i forgot how much i love this band
wow, what amazing rhythm the singer has, every note is on beat completely
Best cover ever I'll wait three years for a comment because it's from the ninties I'm used to it
this is bound to never be seen but it surprises me how i actually like how this cover saps out the triumphance of the original. theyre not thriving like the singer of the source song, the cover shows that the singer is getting by rather than living at their peak. they are surviving
Best version of this song ever created. Great job Elvis!
Admitted I was powerless over CAKE and I can’t stop listening.
this song really attended to me during a crushing heart break
I was a Boy Scout when this song came out. Thank you Band CAKE! CAKE Rocks!
Crunchy bassline. Cake keeps making them, I keep grooving
Sooooo crunchy
bass line hummmmmmmmm
flawless
Been listening to this since 1998 it’s the bomb 💣
naciye123 same! Epic cover!
This song helped me get threw a breakup and made me feel strong thanks cake lol
Todo relacionamento desastroso começa com Never There e termina com I Will Survive. Amo Cake! ❤
best song to test new earphone
i could listen that bassline and trumpet all day! ❤️
too true!
You be surprised sometimes the $20 variety do a decent job...gave up buying fancy Bose cause as a large musicphile I break them regularly
This song is immortal! Thankyou Cake!!!
I just can't describe the feeling this song gives to me. I used to listen this last summer with my friends in sunny weather just enjoying the moment. Brings back the joy of the memories.
the bass line is just gorgeous
Holy shit I love this version
Hell yess!
Naw it's cheap af. How many cynical versions of popular songs do we need? It's lazy af
I hated this song! Till I heard cake do it.
@@James-cb7nb Yea, but this was way before that whole trend. And it's really not that cynical.
Definitely.....
that guitar, the bassline, this song's really awesome!
Love their deadpan take on this great song, the really nice bass and guitar 💛 Beautiful. The soft guitar part almost makes me a little teary eyed sometimes
13yrs ago this song got me thru my break ups. Stl send it to the people who i know are going thru that one hard break up
This song is helping me through a breakup with my first love... It hurts but Cake soothes the soul
THANK YOU for posting this....love it. This cover is better than original. Best song to listen to, to get over a relationship.
hell yes...thanks to you too for saying that...xoxok
The bass player is funky AF in this song!!!
I ❤ 🎂
I want a piece of that Cake! Awesome band!
OMG DAT BASS
In the Lap of the Gods ikr i was listening to only the right earphone
Bassline is banging
Love the trumpet. Has a western, Mexican standoff vibe to it. Hence ‘survive’
I've seen some people complain about it, but I kinda like the slightly offbeat, sluggish vocals. Gives it a touch of a 'can't care enough in a good way' vibe.
