  • Neil Armstrong may have been the first person to walk on the moon, but he wasn't the only astronaut on the Apollo 11 mission; someone had to stay onboard the ship.

    Even more humble when you read his book "Carrying the Fire" and his boss Deke Slayton basically offered him the Commanders position for what would become Apollo-17 that last Apollo landing mission. He turned it down because he realized the impact that the demands of being a astronaut was having on his family. He choose his marriage and children over the chance to walk on the lunar surface.

    Michel Collins is one of the most inspirational personalities among Apollo astronauts, humble, combining great, brilliant sense of humor with deepest seriousness and feeling of responsibility - which are not contradictory at all but together make a real man, real human.

  • @AdamShaiken

    Forgotten? Please. Perhaps, though only by those too young to remember the actual events...He certainly was never forgotten by those who intently watched in awe as the events unfolded live and have continued to appreciate the milestone ! He was and is forever a member of a team of men who reached the moon. Period. Never forgotten by me and my contemporaries ! No he certainly wasn't lauded like the others, but he said he never resented that fact and I don't think it was because he was forgotten.

    • @thinh7993
      @thinh7993 Před 8 lety +11

      +Adam Shaiken true, however the young generations will only remember the most famous one. Like during the American Revolution, do we actually remember all the guys that fight under Washington or side by side. Washington only won a few big battles. We should change the education system and start teaching children the unsung heroes/ heroines and not the one that already being glorified by history like Washington, Franklin, Lincoln...

      For me, as a space buff and pilot, this video seemed strange in another way. I suppose intellectually I know that this isn't everyone's "thing" but to hear it explained this way I couldn't help but feel like I should put myself in the place of people who do think of NASA as only having two astronauts.
      In case my tone comes across wrong, I don't mean any offense to you by this, just providing another perspective :). And I thought the video was well done.

    Rest In Peace, Michael Collins. Without his piloting skills Aldrin and Armstrong wouldn't have made the journey to and from the Moon, but Michael was so humble that he would not even think of himself as being at the same level of history-making as his fellow astronauts. Mr. Collins was not in the public's mind nor the media's spotlight as his colleagues but his biography Carrying the fire was and still is the best memoir by which astronauts measure success. God be with you in your final journey, Michael Collins.

    I read a children's chapter book called "I love you Michel collins". Such a pure representation of how everyone has forgotten him. I'll try not to spoil everything but it's about this girl that goes to a school and her class has to write letters to the astronauts in this video. Only the one girl chose to write about Michael Collins. As people make fun of her choice she ignores them and continues to write to Michel Collins every day, telling him about her life, hoping one day he'll respond.

    Michael Collins passed away earlier this week. I remember after Neil Armstrong died, Collins wrote a great tribute to Armstrong in the Washington Post. But, while reading that tribute, it sounded like a hero-worshiper, not somebody who is Armstrong's colleague, until Collins wrote something like "Neil would make appearances for our professional society!" A humble hero! RIP Michael Collins!

    One of the best books on the Apollo Program is by Michael Collins, entitled "Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut's Journeys"

    I wonder what he felt taking in the fact that he orbited next to the moon all alone all those years ago ( he's still alive up to this day, 87 years old ) like really the feeling must be unexplainable
