And the most important thing (to me) even though it's his show, Graham knows it's not about him. People watch for the guests and want to hear what THEY have to say or what THEY think. Almost every talk show host wants to be the funniest person on the show and that's just wrong. It annoys the crap out of me. Graham doesn't tell stories or jokes just to be funny he always does it to encourage conversation and that's why he's the best talk show host on television.

Huge difference in format though. U.S. talk shows are edging ever closer toward 50/50 content vs advertising time. There is so little flow in most U.S. late night interviews, always a rush to get to whatever the actor/celeb is promoting before commercial break. By contrast there are no ad breaks on Graham's show, funny personal anecdotes can run their proper lengths, other guests can riff on the details, etc..

One of the things that I think helps a lot in Graham's show is the research they make so as to find stories or subjects that some guests have in common. That's how sometimes you get the guests to interact with each other, without the need of the host to interveen with questions or comments. In some clips you can even see Graham just leaning on his couch appreciating the conversation between them unfolding.

The alcohol, plus none of the gossipy personal life stuff gets touched. He also teases them but about innocent things. Like the crazy Halloween outfits Harrison Ford wears during Halloween with Calista Flockhart for example. I also notice that he'll have a UK comedian on as well to get other guests relaxed. I really think that's the reason it works so much.

There also needs to be allowances made because there is a significant cultural difference when it comes to this kind of show, I think. For better or worse, they aren't allowed this kind of freedom in talk shows in the States. They're used to question, answer, question, answer, joke, question, answer, lather, rinse, repeat on all the shows.
I will agree with you, though, that many American guests don't appear to be that bright, but I also think that is a product of the Hollywood system to dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator so even if the guest is really intelligent, they aren't used to being allowed to let it show.

So usually its the really huge stars who don't really worry much who are the best guests. I don't get the feeling of pompous, but I see your point. In the US most media does nothing but talk them up, while british press is known for dragging people down, so those guests are more used to it.
But that is largely true, on craig fergusons old show it was his interviews at first with guests in his audience that was usually the funniest part of the show. And they do that a lot too on nortons show.

His show is not a hugbox or a simple platform for guests to promote things and have fun. He uses his privilege and reach to ask the hard hitting questions and address the elephant in the room.
His irreverence for the pretense of courtesy is what makes him stand out from the other hosts who thrive only on light fun and little to no substance. He earned this audience all the way back when he refused to hold back at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner while President Bush and the most powerful figures in politics, media, and industry were present to hear him tear them apart.

Stephen doesn't make the show about him but involves himself in the conversation. You honestly sound like you never had a conversation with another human being in your life before. Stephen, Conan Kimmel, Fallon, Leno, Seth, letterman and Carson all had different styles of interviewing some are more reserved than graham some are not. Mrbrain bob, if you're American, you should know that Carson didn't invent the talk show format, just popularized it. Besides, even if the Americans were the trailblazers, doesn't mean they should be above criticism, especially since hosts like Dick Cavett were very different to Fallon for example, and the format itself is vastly different nowadays in some shows with the obnoxious games etc. British talk shows just seem more free-spirited and relaxed.

Colbert is mostly a sponge which is a complete departure from his previous interview style. Letterman is his later days barely did more than introduce the guest. Most of them let the actors tell their boring stories. If anything Craig Ferguson was the worst offender of this. The show was completely centered around him. He often interrupted his guests and provided all the jokes and that is why people tuned in. He was genius. I think the real problem with most American talk shows is that they are just plug-driven vehicles for actors and studios. Norton show (and Fergusons) never felt like that. Ferguson's show never had a plan, never went by any script, ignored the prep questions, and did little to plug the actor's current project (Stewart did the same to celebrities) and it felt very organic because of this. Norton is also a genius but its planned. He goes by the questions, by the prep and research but it still feels organic. When Corden does it, it feels clunky and scripted but I am sure he will get better with time.

I ran across Mr Norton on youtube. Whenever I need a pick me up from stress or blues, Mr Norton's show and Robin Williams are my go to cures. Mr Norton is very affable and allowing his guests to be themselves, you get more revelation of a small quaint talk among "friends" than a formal Q & A.

@@Eli-kq7qt Their shows are actually aired in less countries. Norton literally airs in more countries than any other talkshow. The two you mention may be more famous in America, but that is just continuing the ignorant egocentricity already being called into question by the original comment. And richest? Oprah did not get that from being a talkshow host, she got that from other ventures like her publishing company and production company. Her wages as a talkshow host were famously low (by her own admission) and that was precisely why she pivoted into setting up those other companies. So yeah, she's a more famous and richer businessperson, but that is a strawman to this debate about the talkshows. Graham is paid more by others for his talkshow than she ever was for her own while it was being run by other people: Fact.

He also talks less and makes less jokes. Before he used to come out with hilarious stuff. It used to be funny when he used to do things like the the "do u like wood prank?" or the funny foreign foods names with Stanley tucci, or reading out the letter of the billionaire boy book ect.. and also when he used to engage the audience more like Chris pine and benedict cumberbatch and getting Liam Neeson to add his voice to someone's voice mail message. Also when he used to show objects to guests and bring up things about their pasts like an embarrassing modelling shoot. As well as showing things from the Internet. I dont think they use Internet much now after an incident where on a Google search it was showing " why is there a dead pakistani on my couch?" But mainly It don't feel he Jokes and talks as much compared to before. His humour is brilliant as well as his expressions and the way he reads things like the billionaire boy letter

Graham Norton is the most entertaining talk-show host I ever saw. He actually being naturel characters, interaction never seen before.

Yeah, it was a little sad when you saw Colbert had to move on to the next topic a few times. I feel like they could have easily gone on for half an hour uninterrupted by network needs to touch on many different topics!

Yeah. American chat show interviews are all far too rushed. Don't think I've ever seen one go over like 8 minutes...Where as you watch Graham Norton and you've got an (almost) hour of chatting.

MrSceneNine so true! I think that might be to do with their set-up though. When you have a group of guests one is bound to at least be interesting for 40mins or so but if you have one boring guest for 8mins then it's a killer! 😄 Wish they made exemptions with special guests like Graham though. He had so much more to say
