So why is it there hasn't been a Warcraft 4? Why has the Warcraft series been an MMORPG longer than it has been an RTS? Why does Warcraft 3 NEED a sequel? Well, we're about to find out...

I wouldn’t say that RTS games aren’t in that big of a lull. While there have been a couple bad RTS games this past couple of years but there’s been plenty of great ones as well. Other then Halo Wars 2, the Total war series has seen something of a resurgence in these past couple of years thanks in part to the Warhammer spin off series, with those games selling extremely well. I say RTS is in a pretty good place at the moment and I’d recommend trying out the Total War Warhammer series if you haven’t already

Who else wanted to play as the Naga so badly outside of the campaign? Like why weren't they a playable faction in games?
Same man. I always wondered what types of heroes there would be besides the Queen. They were such a cool faction and I'm disappointed they were never added as a playable faction.
Some of the few things I don't like about Warcraft 3: the limited number of units you can control at a time and campaign-only factions.

Probably because it would be hard to balance. 3 way in a multiplayer game is easy to mantain, you can keep it balanced. But fourth faction would cause problems in a game where factions are extremely different from each other. Not to mention Naga was extremely op because of nature of the quest.
Naga race special (moving on water) will be useless on most maps outside the campaign levels.
To be honest, I don't really think a Warcraft IV would ever be able to surpass it's predecessor.
Warcraft III is a near perfect game and not many games have ever gotten to this point of quality.
That said, I'd, of course, love Blizzard to prove me wrong.

Even if Warcraft 3 finally got a sequel it would likely be completely and thoroughly screwed up. The blizzard of today isnt even remotely like the blizzard of the early 2000s. I would say its a much weaker game studio overall, and you don't want a mediocre studio making a successor to one of the greatest games of all time.

Worse part, if WoW dies, this might just say to Blizzard “Maybe it’s time to wrap up Warcraft, since it’s declining, we might as well end it in WoW.” And they won’t consider Warcraft 4 at all.
My idea of when Warcraft 4 could happen, is when they run out of places to explore or tell us about in Azeroth.
Heck, a lot of stuff in Legion and Battle for Azeroth are really building up to an event that could determine the fate of everything in Warcraft.
The end of Legion has already ended the like 12-13+ year old threat by imprisoning Sargeras, so now it's all old gods and after that.. nobody knows where it could go.
We've already seen Anduin as an old man on the exodar/vindicaar with velen preparing for a final battle, so that's still something that has to happen most likely in WoW
I always felt the comic with old Anduin could be a potential moment in a possible Warcraft 4. But yeah, it’s all old gods and void lords at this point.
Even the new allied races have quite a bit going on with the void. I won’t spoil much, buts it’s definitely leading into some major event happening because of the void lords and old gods IMO
No, it's even worse.
ALL the lore wasn't told through the MMO and those lazy designed quests (some quest stories are still incomplete for years), but tons of stupid comics (both mangas and HQs), badly written books and one of the worst movies this decade has ever seen.
The only good way they could tell us the lore was in the short stories and those "harbingers" animated series, ONLY.
Oh, and let's not forget that some of those books and comics where NOT considered cannon after some years.
storywise blizzard has already experimented with alternate realities in warcraft. they could totally do a warcraft 4 that ignores wow altogether and just say "lol alternate universe"

I'd legit pay $1000 or more for a copy if they made a sequel that doesn't continue on WoW's story, they've fucked that up too badly. Tho they won't make a sequel until Wow's player base dies, to milk the concept as much as possible. RIP old Blizzard, they're turning into EA.

there are some fan-made custom campaigns that continue the WoW story in WC3 and there are some that follow the books story, which are pretty well made. They not official but very well made maps, difficult quests and if the story is what you need this will totally "feed" your lore needs. Plus, you dont need to pay a single cent for them

Never will happen in the hands of EA. That company might resurrect it just because they know people have nostalgia for it...but it would cave into a shameless cash grab. The disgusting part is there are gamers that would buy it anyway with that knowledge.

You 2 do understand why remastered things happen right? It's sort of like a test to see how many people are still interested in the product. The more people will buy it the higher are the chances that we will see a REAL sequel.

This game should get a sequel ignoring all the damn WoW expansions. A gritty and dark story about Arthas taking over.
xD well you'd need to retcon everything then, except the story of how the universe was created and all that shit leading up to Arthas' transformation into the lich king. Which, considering how much the story has progressed and how many books have been written won't ever happen.

I feel like that would be the best scenario for Wc4 if they decide to do it.
It could happen given all of the WOD multi verse stuff. Frankly, I don't see them doing it. What I think is more likely is a new RTS IP, using the best of Warcraft and StarCraft in a new setting. Blizz has also been hiring more Diablo staff, just throwing that out there. Whatever happens, RTS's aren't as popular any more, so they may never return to their roots.
I would like it, should there be a Warcraft 4, that they make it based on a past event, like Human campaign is the scarlet crusade and their raids on Northrend, Undead campaign focuses on the Forsaken and Varimathres`s betrayal, Orc campaign being thrall finding Garrosh and the campaign on Northrend, finally Night elf Campaign follows Maiev in quest against Illidan in outland (this being the bonus campaign as rexxars was in frozen throne). This I s just an idea but one that I like.
That Arthas cutscene at the end of the human campaign is one of my favourite video game cutscenes ever, the powerful bells ringing, building up his return, the flower petal that decays as he grabs it and the sombre music that plays as he enters the throne room, very sad and powerful to watch someone be corrupted so much

I'm an RTS fan, but I also love RPGs, and I know you do too. It's just the MMO that you dislike. I happen to like that however. All I'm trying to say is that RTS fans don't necessarily hate MMORPGs.

Warcraft IV has always been the Half life 3 of Blizzard. I think now that Starcraft II and its expansions have been released, there is slightly more chance for a Warcraft IV. However, I think they could only release such a game once WoW is done because of story reasons (it would be weird to have 2 Warcraft games in the same time telling 2 different stories) and not to compete to WoW too much I guess. Thing is Blizzard said many times they won't stop developing WoW until there the game's become not profitable so WoW could exist for many years.
Who knows what will happen, I'd sure love a Warcraft IV since even though I play WoW, I always considered Warcraft III as the pinnacle of good Warcraft stories.
Plenty of successful games have had story-line inconsistencies, or that simply make no sense at all. Lore consistency is the worst possible excuse to not make the game, there are any number of ways to get around this problem if there exists the will to do so.
That's just one of my guesses. Blizzard hasn't said much about Warcraft IV as you can see in the video. Maybe they're afraid to release it because of the huge expectation it could create (à la HL3). We don't even know if they actually want to make the game.
Sure, they could do a Warcraft 4 based on the War of the Ancients for example or another planet like Argus or whatever.. but I'm pretty sure they can't make a sequel to Warcraft 3 since WoW is supposed to be the sequel.
We know however that the previous WoW director Tom Chilton and the previous Heroes of the Storm director Dustin Browder (and others like Holinka..) are now working on an unnanounced Blizzard project so who knows, maybe there is still hope.
Just make warcraft 4 non canon or have it based before WoW.

Oh man, this and Age of Mythology were my childhood PC games, my intro to the RTS genre! I always wanted Warcraft IV to happen. Too bad Blizzard makes too much money from WoW for them to put the effort in making another RTS :(

I don’t know about how WoW isn’t an exception to the whole ‘MMOs are more focused on gameplay than story’ part.
I feel the story telling and drive in Legion, WoW’s latest expansion that arrived in 2016, was told incredibly well. Even Warlords of Dreanor, despite receiving lots of hate for not having much content compared to past expansions, the characters and tales told were excellent and engaging.
I’m not sure how much you played into WoW recording footage Actman, but I will defend WoW for still having awesome story telling like in Warcraft 3.
It’s just a shame the story telling doesn’t really pick up until someways when you’re a higher level; up until then, you’re adventuring and questing like any MMO, helping those in need and witnessing history unfold before you.
I’m not going sit here and say “Just keep going until you’re like level 85 or 100!” But trust me when I say WoW’s story telling goes more than just what happens when leveling up in the early zones, especially in Legion.

While I agree with you on Cata on that regard. But did you ever play mists of pandaria? Leveled in Wod or legion? Warcraft has never had amazing lore but for blizzard it was never about what they told it was about how they told it. With that, WoW's story telling methods have gotten exponentially better though out the lifespan of the game. Look at any Warcraft story for its' content critically and you will be disappointed but the way Blizzard tells the stories is what people like
Also just about universally people agree that what content Wod had was really good it is just that there was not much of it and I have to ask. Did you play it? Like at all? Or did you just see that other people were hating on it and it didn't have Arthas on the front cover therefor must be bad?

Man... Warcraft 3. Played on hardest setting, I felt so immersed and consumed with this game that I tried to keep every unit alive. Then, the bonus campaign with Rexxar. I miss this game and this experience so much.
Also, I do have to say you saying that world of Warcraft doesn't have any interesting stories is completely horseshit honestly, I would point towards Wrath of the Litch King and Legion's stories.

Also, I feel that WoW is just milking the story instead of continuing it. A whole lot of the Warcraft lore has been around with the first two games, and Warcraft III picked this up in a great way, just as Diablo II did with the Diablo lore. WoW also picked up a lot of things, but not in an appealing way. They made characters who are supposed to be good or already dead to raid bosses, with kinda ridiculous explanations. I understand that it is difficult to have a continuing story in an MMORPG, but it's sad to see that games like Guild Wars 2 do it a lot better than WoW in spite of Warcraft having a huge background lore to base on.
I think it would've been a great chance for Blizzard to make Warcraft IV based on the events after WoW: Legion because of the HUGE story arc that has just ended. It would've been kinda cool to see the beginning of a new story take place in a Warcraft rts game, but now with the Battle for Azeroth expansion and vanilla WoW announced it feels pointless to even think about it. Especially after the success of Legion which got people hyped about WoW again.

Im shit at RTS, so what drew me to play warcraft 3 for over 7 years is the World Editor.
The most simplest, easiest and versatile editor out of all games. When Warcraft 4 comes out it has to have just as easy editor!
I hate micromanaging so if I want to play RTS with friends I usually tweak it so that units dont have abilities only passives, add few new passives and stats to balance it. And limit playable heroes to 1.
Making cinematics with voiceover was also a thrill.
Not to mention those who are really dedicated can crank up the difficulty of the editor by custom coding and using variables to truly be able to create anything.
I dont even like warcraft at all but somehow act man made this video super interesting to me

I always hoped for a WC3 remake/remaster, but in the form of a 3rd expansion (a first of it's kind). Maybe not adding another race but adding more heroes, units, buildings, maps and items. This could fully revive the series w/o stepping on the toes of former Blizzard games and would be easier to develop instead of a fourth installment (which would still inevitably come presumably).
SC2 is still experimenting with skins, I wonder if some of those purchasable cosmetics would make their way over. I'm not entirely crazy about the idea but as long as they're subtle changes and still easily recognizable I'm all for it. Can you imagine hero skins? Again, nothing crazy like in HoTS. I think that could be a huge SELLING point ;)

I first played warcraft 3 when I was 11yeara old and I loved it, my dad introduced me into the game he loved and I finish the campaign about 17 times from the beginning after getting board I found that they had a online(Battle.net) and played a lot more. My dad showed me warcraft 2 and warcraft 3 frozen thrown I will never forget the fun I had. My older brother also played but did not love the Awesome battles of warcraft 3 as much as I did, I saw that world of Warcraft continued with the story of warcraft 3 and my brother was playing wow. I did not find much enjoyment out of the game but my brother plays it here and there to this day. I have moved onto the new game “They are billions” I have more hope in that game than I do in a warcraft 4 but anything is possible.

What people seem to forget is that blizzard is Activision-Blizzard, a stupidly large company now and *REALLY* likes money. A triple A game without extra monetisation?! Perish the thought!
Its like what people say about EA, some money is never as attractive to them as much as ALL the money. Its why they don't drop prices of old packs in hearthstone, sometimes retiring them even, making them unobtainable, its why they jammed lootboxes into heroes of the storm and overwatch. Blizzard designed Diablo 3 entirely around the auction house and making people pay real money for items. That's as low as you can get. The only difference with EA is that Blizzard knows how to keep an audience interested in the same licenses, as opposed to EA destroying them. But then EA can afford to do that but not Blizzard.
It is a business after all. How dare they a business who's primary goal is monetization try to make money. I don't think bashing a company because "They are in it for the money" is completely fair. Blizzard has not hit the point of greed where PUBG and EA have done. Again how dare a company who's only purpose is to make money, continue making a game that is an easy and predictable revenue stream which many people happen to like very much.

By the way, there is a developer that makes campaigns for Warcraft 3 similarly from wow, especially The Curse of The Forsaken where it is somewhat the same from The Wrath of the Lich King. It focused on Sylvana's Forsaken joining the Horde and fighting Scourge with the Alliance.

Would be good if they made WoW it's own separate "what if " mmo canon. That way Warcraft 4 could continue where WC3 left off and tell the story of Azeroth and rest of characters from that point on.
Oh god, that black and white outro... right in the feels. I still watch a random assortment of competitive wc3 daily, but the idea of wc4 makes me nervous. I don't see how they could possibly reproduce this pristine pillar of my childhood.
WoW needs to be officially labeled by Blizzard as non-canon or at least as a spin-off, so we can get a true sequel to warcraft 3 that actually makes sense and doesn't revolve around you (online character) or a group of raiders being the center of attention. To me that's what made WoW feel so...."fake".

The story doesn't revolve around you.It revolved around a certain lore character with a help of adventurers.
I played WoW since 2006, on and off. All expansions. Honestly it doesn't stand a chance to Warcraft 3 story. Most of the lore is inconsistent, retconned, and doesn't seem real. I haven't felt any time the eeriness, desperation and tension of the original. The lore has been brutally forced to revolve around the MMO genre, and because of it, it is expected that there will be no consequences that affect the world or the way you play (other than visual aspects). In WC3 interaction and connection with the story is amplified through gameplay, because unlike WoW you are put in unique situations depending on the plot. You're either soloing with your hero in dungeons, fleeing away from enemy armies, regular build and battle, timed defense levels, MOBA style levels were your armies are controlled by AI and you control heroes, and so much more. You feel like you're part of this epic campaign that is completely unexpected and throws you in all these diverse positions. In WoW the story is more of a facade created as an excuse to add new dungeons, raids, quest lines, and other repetitive content that MMOs recycle. In other words the story revolves around you the player making it feel superficial and forced. In WC3 you revolved around the story, which in turn made it much more authentic, interesting, and naturally was much more easier for the developers to produce the lore to be amazing.
WoW's story is putrid cancer, but holding Warcraft 3's story in such a high regard is overkill. Current storylines are not bad, because they are inferior to War3's assumed god status of a story. They are bad, because they are bad, and a story for War4 will be equally bad.
I would like to say you are wrong, but then the Void Elves were announced. Also, we had Warlords of Draenor, an entire expansion based on time-travelling to a different universe, where we accidentally didn't bring any of the characters that could meet themselves from this universe. Sometimes the story really feels insulting to my intelligence and I wonder how do some other players don't feel the same. You hear some nonsense from an NPC while playing and you just think "I ain't buying that shit!".
But, after so many books and expansions and "WoW Chronicles" to cement it, I don't think this will ever be non-canon. Even hearthstone can be more canon than this, sometimes. Time is money, friend! And RTS doesn't give as much money as MMORPG can, especially WoW with its monthly subscription. Unless they made warcraft 4 with a monthly subscription, or something like that? Also, I'd like to mention that Warcraft 3 was also a retcon of warcraft 1 and 2, but to me, and most people, it felt like it gave a lot of meaning and a lot of magic to the world, it made the world bigger and that bigger world paved the way for WoW.
It was Warcraft 3 that made me love fantasy stories and no matter how many other stories I saw, it was always my favorite. That's why I came to WoW, but I will always be realistic and criticize it for what it has done to the lore. I like the world and the unique style they had. I like Night Elves and Dwarves with guns. I like Jamaican Trolls and greedy Goblins. That's about it, I think. Thanks!

But a business is in it for the money. Not all companies do it but a company is not going to drop something like WoW that makes them millions of dollars on a monthly basis for a 1 time purchase title which will make a couple million once or twice. Warcraft 4 will not sell that much. Not enough to warrant dropping a monetary success pattern wow or their other games have brought.

When I first encountered The Founding of Durotar, I felt " the playstyle is like MMORPG, endless enemies respawning everywhere, even at exact location I killed them, I turn back after a moment, they show up again, so, is the future about Warcraft 3 ? Becoming a MMORPG? " then it did happened.

I want a warcraft 4 that ignore everything World of Warcraft and continue where it left off with the same quality of story in warcraft 3. Ever since World of Warcraft came out, the story has taken the biggest hit.
The plot is basically: BAD GUY WANTS TO TAKE OVER/DESTROY THE WORLD, STOP THEM and then we do.... Over and over again.
The characters are trash. They seem like characters who have nothing going on in their lives outside reacting to threats. Like what they do in game is exactly what they do in their world: just standing around looking at walls.
Well... When you think about it, current WoW is in good position to transition back to W4 :
Alliance and horde are at odds full swing again.
The burning legion has been awfully quiet as of late, regrouping.
That COULD provide groundwork for a legion comeback kicking everyone in the nuts, and from there you can write a campaign...

I think you're misunderstanding what I wrote. I didn't say frozen. I said restart from there, meaning I don't like the story in world of warcraft and want them to start over from there to tell a tighter and focused narrative like they did in warcraft 3. Not frozen in the past.

we dont need a warcraft 4. New API for war3 is being rewritten. It is not possible to write a completely new interface. Change any unit/ability fields dynamically :)

I would love if they just made a super-remaster. Remove the blurriness and add a few models to the compendium of units (for Map Editor purposes) like that Lich King.
They cooould add Oil as a resource option as well for the editor, so that skimishes could have a naval aspect to them maybe with a little fishing (food) too. WC2 had it. The ship models and docks are already in the game.
It would sell for $30.00 easy.

Warcraft tells exactly THE most important and THE most EPIC things there are that happen in this timline and branching out into a less interesting story would be foolish.
I'm, not saying there are no other ways - there defenitely are, but they would certainly need to hard work on it so it could compete with WoW's story at the same time.
As you see I personally think that story would be their biggest concern.
But damn would I want to live to see Warcraft4 someday.
