I’ve used a hacksaw, a coping saw, and even dental floss to cut PVC pipe successfully, but my favorite tool for getting the job done easily and quickly is an oscillating tool.
Before I begin cutting, I wrap some tape all the way around the pipe to mark where I’m going to cut. You can just use a marker, but I prefer to use a tape because by cutting along the tape’s edge I can make a cut straight. I
After cutting, you need to remove the burrs so that the edges are smooth, and then wipe away all the dust.
I needed to add back the female trap adapter that got cut off, so I bought a new replacement that I’m going to bond to the PVC pipe.
First, I’m going to apply primer to the areas that will get bonded, which include the outer surface of the pipe and the inner surface of the adapter. The primer helps clean and soften the PVC for the cement to do it’s job of bonding PVC parts together.
Then, I’m going to apply cement over where the primer got applied.
I push firmly to fit the 2 parts together and then it’s very important to turn one of the parts, in this case the adapter, a quarter turn relative to the other part, and then hold the pieces together in place for about 20-30 seconds. That’s it.
By the way, If you need to make a PVC pipe longer, that’s easy to do by connecting two pipes using a coupler.
