I was asking myself this question just the other day. I do many SSD upgrades for clients, the regular laptop size drives, but have never cloned an M.2 SSD. Glad to see they are making enclosures for these. I will be ordering one right away! Thanks Carey!

Thanks man, I'm almost in the market for a boot NVMe now that the prices are so low and I needed to clone my SATA3 SSD. I know it's not M.2 = M.2 but invaluable info none the less.

Simple and to the point, thank you for the video! We need more videos like this. Acronis has been around for a while, great product. I also tried the same external cases you used and ended up with the pluggable too! Keep up the good work sir and you have another subscriber!

Thanks! Love the very clear voice and accent. Funny is when I first saw the kitchen scene I thought I wrongly clicked a cooking how-to tutorial. Time for me to upgrade. my M.2 Plextor 128gb (performed well to date 6yo now) is not enough for windows 10.. so If you think of getting a boot/main drive- get 256gb or higher.

I had a MSI Motherboard that supported two Nvme drives; Original OS drive (Samsung 950) was 512G and I wanted to migrate to a new 2nd Nvme (Samsung Pro 980) 1TB drive with Acronis installed. (I didn't use the recovery USB as described in the video); Within windows I selected the Acronis clone option - OS Drive was source and new 1TB drive the Target. All remaining options stayed as default (remaining unused space on new drive was acquired to maximize storage space) and then finished the cloning process. Powered off the system, removed the Original OS drive and powered back on. Windows resumed without any hiccups. Now I have tons of space on the new drive and its even faster than before.

Thank you Carey!!!! Last year I bought a different enclosure to clone my NVMe SSD (256GB) to a 500 Samsung NVMe SSD and the Samsung Migration tool could not recognize the new drive. I took it to a "professional" shop to get the cloning and install done and got back my computer with a "clean" Windows install. I took your advice and got a "Plugable" enclosure. Put a new Samsung 1TB in the enclosure, used Samsung Migration software and 1 hour later had a clone with the original 299 GBs installed. Installed it in my computer and works fine (waited 3 days to be sure). Hope MS Flight Simulator doesn't grow much bigger!

Thanks for the very clear video and precise description of how to do this clone. I have made a clone of my "c" drive and keep it in my safe. I "test drove" if to make sure it worked. Acronis did the entire process seamlessly.

I found this video very informative and followed it exactly to upgrade my laptop. I was upgrading the primary (C:) drive from a 256GB to a 1TB NVMe. All went well until I restarted my machines after the process and found applications I had installed on the secondary (D:) drive were no longer available.
I discovered both drives had been encrypted using BitLocker and some how the key for the D: had been compromised by replacing the primary drive. The original primary drive, now residing in the enclosure, is still encrypted but, as I hope not to need the files on it, I am not concerned at this point.
The lesson-learned is to remove BitLocker from those drives that might be affected before commencing the cloning procedure, and more importantly, reinstate BitLocker once complete.
I suspect Windows 11 will ease this issue because, unlike Win 10, it expects there to be a TPM on the motherboard for storing encryption keys.

    Hi Carey, Jim from UK.
Thanks for your video on cloning a SSD, very informative and nice presentation, just about to embark on the same process with my PC, my plugable has been ordered and delivery tomorrow!!
I have an observation, presumably once the cloned SSD has been fitted, the old one can be reformatted and installed in the M2B socket? I have a Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra.
    Thanks again. Keep Safe!

I am just looking into putting a larger M.2 PCIe SSD in my win 10 PC. From 256GB to 1TB and I read it will not recognize that I am cloning my new Samsung 970 evo if using a usb connection and not boot. I am worried about that and getting the bios right. You made it look so easy. Last time I worked on a PC, XP was new and IDE was the norm lol. Was wondering if the hardware and software makes that not a problem. Great video, just subscribed.

Hi Carey. Hope you are doing great. I wanted to solve a doubt. I have a Kingston SSD with 256GB already on my laptop. I'm using on that SSD 160gb. If I want to put the 160gb on the USB drive where Acronis is, do I have to buy a 200gb USB drive? Or it doesn't matter the USB space. Thank you very much.

Can you successfully clone and replace a M.2 NVME SSD with TPM and BitLocker encryption enabled? I see this feature on many Dell Laptops.

  • @DustInTheWindAZ
    @DustInTheWindAZ Před 3 lety

Hi Carey. On your advice, I bought an NVMe drive to replace the mechanical drive in a refurbished Dell Optiplex. I have installed the drive on the motherboard in a PCIe slot (using an adapter, because there was no NVMe port on the motherboard). Can I clone the mechanical drive to the new NVMe drive installed on the motherboard? I tried earlier in the week, but Acronis seemed to have frozen; probably because the 4Gb of memory was running at 90%, so I ordered another 8Gb. I've already replaced the hard drive with an SSD in my HP laptop sucessfully, so the only difference is the internal NVME. I hope you have the time to answer a question from your neighbor in Glendale.

okay, it all seemed to work . then once i plugged it in and turn on blue screen . going from 2 tb ssd to 4 tb ssd . it boots fine as usb ,i see all drive letters and partitions. But if i put it into the computer blue screen , think it maybe a setting in the bios????

what if the target disk is smaller?
my c drive is 600gb but used space is only 400gb and new nvme is 512gb.
will it clone without any problem?

As long as the drive you're going to clone to is larger than the size of the space taken up, you should be fine

Speak of the devil, I just bought Acronis 2020 and cloned my NVMe's to faster higher storage drives a while ago. I got a Samsung 950 Pro 512GB and 960 Pro 512GB which I don't know what to do with. I guess I can buy an NVMe card since my motherboard only has two NVMe slots.
