  • I have two thermos food jars. A 16 oz (470ml) made by the THERMOS®️brand, and a 24oz (710ml) one made by the STANLEY®️brand. Both keep lots of stuff hot or cold. Yet both are also great for cooking stuff. The larger Stanley one is the perfect size for cooking a pack of hot dogs. Which is great for picnics, tailgates, and road trips. Or just taking for lunch on the job site. More than that, you can impart flavor to the hot dogs by seasoning the water with what ever you like; try making a NYC dirty water dog, or a Louisiana seafood boil dog, etc. In this video I demonstrate how to make just regular ol’ delicious boiled hot dogs in a Stanley thermos jar. I also talk a bit about the various uses of a thermos style food jar. #stanley #stanleyfoodjar #thermos #thermoworks

    That Stanley Thermos brings back memories, both good and bad, I was an engineer on a dredge for some years and I had one of those I brought coffee in every night. Cool video big Lew! Rock On!

    Stanley, THERMOS are old school, but the new kid on the block is Yeti. I like them all. Nice history lesson, and fun hot dog cook! Thanks Big Lew!

      Shhh…. Don’t tell that to all those trendy white women with the big Stanley cups. They think Stanley is the latest and greatest thing. Yeti, is marketed to demographic group outside of my modest budget. Now Stanley is that way! So I shot another Stanley video cooking shrimp jambalaya in this same Stanley Food Jar. I’ll probably put out one testing the coffee bottle too. I’m going to ride this Stanley train till it wrecks!

      @@I00PercentCotton Went great. Used my electric tea kettle to boil water. Right before I left, put the boiled water into the thermos with about 6 dogs. 3 hours later uncorked the thermos and the dogs were piping hot. Tasted exactly as they do when you make em at home. Brought a gallon Zip Lock bag with buns and little condiment packets. Looking forward to trying brats next. Highly recommend!

      It really is, or taking to parades or ball game anything for just a couple of people or a small group, a family of four or so.
      Good for bicycle day trips, stuff like that. If you don’t open it they really stay hot a long time.
      The temps I measured at almost four hours, were 127°F, but it had been opened at least four times, IDK for how long it was open when my kids did it. Yet I know that when use this for my lunches, which is usually 5-6 hours after o put food an boiling water in it my meals are usually between 150° -160°F.

    That was seriously interesting! Didn't know that about the Thermos name- Sabatier is similar with knives, with a couple of companies having trademarked variations but the name itself being a free for all.
    I deal in antique and vintage kitchenalia, and get the the big Thermos food jars in occasionally- they don't fetch much, but they never hang around for long because they still work!

      I love my food jars both the Stanley and Thermos brand. My synopsis of the history is very abridged for brevity. Glad you enjoyed it, but you could look up more about the history of each brand; Thermos and Stanley.
      They are both quality and have been around much longer than YETI, RTIC, T-Fall, Contigo, Orca, etc.
      Thanks for watching.

    Nice tip. I have never had a short thermos. I need to keep my eye out for a good used one.
    I bought two 1.4 Qt Stanley’s on clearance at Sam’s Club a couple of years ago instead of buying a carafe. I also use them when taking long trips and need some strong hot coffee at hand. They work much better at retaining heat than my old Gott thermos(I still have it) that I bought well over 40 years ago.

    • @BigLewBBQ
      @BigLewBBQ  Před 4 měsíci +1

      The short thermoses are called food jars, they have wide mouths for filling and eating out of. They do a good job with soups, stews, chili, and stuff like that. Even more importantly you can cook stuff in them, especially grains like rices, grits, oat meal. In in my 16 oz Thermos one, I use for canned condensed soup. Of course I prime it first. I simply dump in the can, then a equal about of boiling water from the kettle. Seal it up and give it a shake and I’ll have hot soup at lunch. In the 24 ounce Stanley I cook convalesce meals. Stuff like Hamburger or Tuna Helper. After priming I put in the dry ingredients, then a can of tuna, add the water, stir it, seal it and it will be cooked when I have lunch. With Hamburger Helper, you have to brown the meat first. I usually use left over Pattie’s from the night before.
      Anyway, the short wide mouth food jar thermoses are quite useful.

    • @BigLewBBQ
      @BigLewBBQ  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yes because it was mostly just water. I clean it with hot water and a little dish soap (detergent), I rinse it and dry it with a dish towel.

      Check out some thermos (small t) cooking videos and websites.
      Oatmeal is an easy one to start with. Grits and cream of wheat are a little trickier because you have open it up stir them after a minute or two.
      If you go to bed around ten o’clock at night, and wake up around 6am. You can put the oats, sugar and butter in the thermos food jar, pour in boiling water, shut it up. It will cook over the twenty to thirty minutes or so with out any more fuel or energy used. Just leave it on the counter while you sleep, you’ll have a hot bowl of oatmeal when you wake up. Check the recipes for the amounts.
      If this video does well I may show how I make Jambalaya and shrimp and grits in these things next week.
      So if you have any of these thermos or Stanley food jars do yourself a favor and look up thermos cooking recipes.
      I appreciate you stopping by my channel.

      Yes, it did, I loved my old glass thermos. The plastic housing I had was rugged but I eventually broke it. I had from the mid 1990’s till about 2013, probably about 16 or 17 years. that Stanley is replaced it with.

    I’ve never had boiled hotdogs before. Do you think that’s the best way to cook them?

    • @BigLewBBQ
      @BigLewBBQ  Před 4 měsíci +1

      It’s a good way to cook them. It’s also a common way to cook them, hot dog venders sell boiled hot dogs from carts on city streets, boiled hot dogs are often sold at concession stands for sporting events and concerts. Often times here in Louisiana they are boiled along with crawfish, corn and potatoes in the crawfish pot.
      The “best” is a subjective term. Boiling them is a convenient and easy way to cook them, and if that’s what you need then it’s the “best”. I think doing it in thermos food jar like this, is a “best” way to cook and Cary them somewhere.
      Look up the term “New York City Dirty Water Hot Dogs” to find out how popular boiled hot dogs are in the Big Apple.
