    I had 4 VDO tachs with malfunctioning hour meters on my 2005 boat (port/starboard at the upper and lower helm stations) that I was able to fix with LCDs from AK Speedo. Unlike the video the bezels on my gauges were crimped on, not screwed on. I had to uncrimp the bezel, a tedious process with a screw driver blade. Used silicone to reseal. The LCDs came with the ribbon cables attached so installation was otherwise easy. One tip: Use a heat gun (on low temperature) or hair dryer to soften the adhesive before removing the dial plate and old LCD. Mine wouldn't budge until I did this. Hour readings on all 4 meters were preserved.

    This was great! Ordered LCD and plugged it in and it works. Old hour reading remained intact.

    Thanks for your video and supplying a new lcd screen. All up and running as normal.
    It might be worth mentioning that is also fixes Nanni diesel hour meters as well.

    I was nervous about doing this but it turned out to be a straightforward 20 minute job and so pleasing to see the engine hours back! When removing the old LCD, I recommend warming it with a hairdryer to soften the glue. Best to detach the clear plastic frame from motherboard first (don’t forget to release ribbon clamp)

    I am confused. When you took the needle off you twisted it ACW, when you went to put it back on you said to do the opposite as taking it off, yet you actually twisted it Anti clock wise too.

    Do you stock the LCD for the Volvo EVC tachometer?

  • @luisromo5888
    @luisromo5888 Před 8 měsíci

    We have the same VDO tachometer but our problem is slightly different, a couple of weeks ago the display showed a new alarm ( which does not exist) we have it set to show the engine hours as this is the only information we want from it, when the alarm was flashing we thought that by pressing the button would rectify this issue, to our dismay all it did was to reset the engine hours to zero.
    How can we bring the engine hours to the correct number? Thanks,

    Hi,
    Great video.
    How did you test the tachometer after installing the new LCD? What is + and - on the back of a VDO instrument?

  • @andreasgarofalakis8556

    Hi
    this is a very intuitive video! the screen of my tachometer is half ligthed when i switch on the instrument lights,. You think that you could fix that without deleting the hours of the engine?

    • @akspeedo
      @akspeedo  Před 4 lety

      Yes, that will just be a background light issue.

    Hi, I have the newer version of this meter (from 2008) - is the screen on your site the right screen for the job please? Also, some git has glued the white housing into the boat - from what I see, it might be possible for me to remove everything from the front if I can remove the rear screws? Thanks for the video :)

    Thanks for the Video. Works for Yanmar too. Just need some advice on how to get the needle off, so you don't have to work with the face plate in the way.

      Did you ever get your needle off? I’ve got a Yanmar and turning it counterclockwise does not seem to do the trick. Also, did you have some kind of glue/semi hard clay substance keeping your ribbon on the computer board? I couldn’t separate the board from the facia.

    When we opened up the tach there is a hard compound around the plug for the LCD. We are original owners, so this is factory. Separately, we cleaned out the dialectic gel, still no hours and now the tach reads about 1000 RPMs high. When you turn off the engine, the need for the tach stays at 1100 RPMs - any advice?
