  • Zach really puts his bike through the paces! This is a 6 month review of his 2021 Trek Marlin 5. Mountain biking was new to us when we purchased this bike and it's become a big part of our lives. We have all progressed so much in a short amount of time and our bikes are getting a lot of use (and abuse).

    Great informational video! The marlin is a great platform to upgrade as you go along. I have a rockhopper which is a similar frame. I've upgraded as I've found the limits of each part. I have added a tapered 120mm air fork, converted to a 1X11 drive train and even switched over to tubeless. All of these upgrades are super easy and I am still below the price point of a higher tier bike like the Roscoe

    • @getstrongby4038
      @getstrongby4038 Před rokem

      The marlin is actually not good for upgrading
      It doesn't allow tapered forks, if you want to upgrade drivetrain the highest you can go is Sram nx or you need to buy a new wheelset
      I bought the marlin 8, it's pretty much as upgraded as you can go

Replaced the front fork with a cheap air fork. It's served me well. I've since bought a Polygon Siskiu T7 and made the Marlin my cross country bike.

Also removing the forged 3x front cranks and putting on some shimano zee 104 cranks and a raceface 32 sprocket and this things rips!!! last two things to change out will be moving to an air fork in the front and a dropper seat post as she's getting more into jumps. @@ReaLzEdits yeh not too bad, chain shakes a fair bit when i go down stairs, which i expect for this price. Also the pedal ate through the threads and fell off on left side. Took it back today had it replaced free of charge. Dont think its made for a fulltime off-road. Maybe half flatroad and half off. But for my size and weight does the job. Gotta put the seat up a fair bit so legs are fully extended. Cant adjust handle bars up so its higher than seat. So my back gets tight. So if u do get it ask the shop if they can put handle bars up a bit higher, u may need to purchase a different neck.

    You should see the new trek marlin 6 2022 it has a 1x 10 drivetrain and hydraulic lockout for those steep climbs.
    Also trek has a warranty that any damage to the frame I think they will fix it for free also if you have a problem with the drive train TREK will fix it.
    And they always say! If you break one part you replace it with a better higher quality one!
    Finally all the frames in the trek marlin line up are the same so you can build on from the frame.

    • @buulam
      @buulam  Před 2 lety +2

      Any of those would work. A few years ago I was going through a weight loss journey and it just came down to consistency. So whatever bike you get, as long as you're on it, raising your heart rate and doing it 3-5 times a week if that's your primary means of exercise, then you'll get the results you want. But more importantly, eating the right foods and at the right amounts is even more important. Exercise is immediately cancelled out by eating bad foods. And even if you're eating good foods, if you eat too much of it, you're still not going to be at the caloric deficit you need. Hope you don't mind my 2 cents :)

      Interesting on the sizing. I think part of the geometry will come down to the distance from seat to handlebars and your torso length so that you're not too hunched over, or too upright. Not sure on the discrepancy with the tire width. And I don't think you can raise the handlebars per se but you could buy aftermarket handlebars that have a rise to them. Enjoy the bike!
