When my instincts tell me I'm looking at a xOxER scenario, my objective quickly switches from getting a good score to simply solving it and keeping my streak alive. That's what happened today. After STARE and DOILY, I assumed I was looking at exactly that. I opted for POWER as my next guess to confirm my xOxER instinct and to also test two (P, W) of the likelier consonants. When that failed, I counted fourteen possible answers with the C, V, N consonants among the most common. That led me to COVEN as a fourth guess. Thankfully that practically gave it to me. COVER for the bogey five, which I am more than happy to log on my scoresheet. I can see some people falling into this trap and failing.

Honestly, I don't know how you do it, Doug. You had SO many options, and decided upon the right letters to use and voila! I was trying to use up my options as I went along, but I was scared. I kept only getting the R and E, and felt it was ER at the end, and I introduced a new vowel with each word. My sequence... Stern, Grape, Demur, Cover... A par 4 day!

Being in the ER trap, it took me 6 tries to get COVER. I almost failed again in Wordle and this is my best game. 😂
I thought I’d lose my streak too. Took me all 6 guesses today
“Er” words have been my nemesis.
So happy that you escaped the “trap”, Doug. After stare and doily, I had “o” in position and “R-E”. I thought of bower, boxer, comer, cover, hover, mover, mower, power, roper, rower and a few words that were already used. Then I tried “brave”. Now I had cover, hover and mover. Next was “chump”. No hover-no mover. So a big “5” for me. But I’ll gladly take it. Did I ever mention that I hate “er” words? 8 times in 849 games, I failed to get the word. 6 of them were “er” words. Baker, cower, gamer, joker, liver and the dreadful “parer”. Phew!

An eval was definitely the way to go and there was no shame doing one in this situation, but I also threw caution to the wind and guessed COVER on 4. Also btw - ROUSE is to awaken or rile someone up, RUSE is for the clever schemers.
Par 4 for me too - though it could have been a 3 but I lost my 50/50 between lover and cover. NAIVE, OVERT, LOVER, COVER. On Doug's game I think homer was also an option on all the variants.

After two "blind" guesses, I went the strategy way, as well. I am glad I didn't have a 50/50 with tower/mower, too. Phew! I feel as though I'm still paying for my two guesser this week.

Great solve. My first word today was NOISE... came up with the O in the right spot and the E in the wrong spot. Next word..ROVER...Well, now I had four letters in the correct spot.. O...V...E..R but that left me with four letters that would work for the first letter, C..L...H...M.... Gave it a moments thought and came up with the word MOCHA...that way three letters could be evaluated and if none of them worked that left the letter L. Fortunately for me, the letter C was the correct letter. So I solved it in four tries. See you all tomorrow.
You could have also used MULCH as a strategic 3rd guess.

After my first guess, I anticipated the dreaded xOxER trap.
I created a "short" list of more than 20 likely answers, then decided to abandon my usual 2nd guess (SNAIL) in favor of something more efficient.
I used a strategic 2nd guess (VOWEL) to reduce my list to 3 words: COVER, HOVER, and MOVER
After a strategic 3rd guess (CHAMP), there was only one possible solution.
