- Midwest Whitetail | Shooting A Buck Off The Ground, Hunting The Rut During Lockdown
On this week's episode we kick things off back in Iowa during the lockdown phase of the rut. First, Mike Reed gives a movement update and offers his two favorite tips to hunt during lockdown. Then, we join team members Caleb Mason and Matt Thede on a rut hunt that they won't soon forget. Finally, Kaleb Greiner tries to change his luck after experiencing tough hunting by heading to a permission farm that he knows holds a lot of does.

Thanks Mike Reed for the encouraging talk at the beginning of the video. It can definitely get frustrating. I needed to hear that. Good luck to you and Jared Mills.
Trent38G, we appreciate the support. It's a tough time to get it done, but it can happen! Keep grinding and good luck.
way to stay with it and getting your trophy. congrats. thanks to great friends.
Him- “If he would have came down wind it would have been done” me- “why should I buy an ozonics again?” 🤔
Good point!
Zach Duncan seriously I’ve always wondered why they use it if they still get busted downwind. I’ve heard it to many times “if he gets down wind we are busted” like why spend 600$ on a machine that’s supposed to “trap scent molecules” an make them “undetectable” if your getting busted anyway lol tells me these hunters and pro staffers don’t have confidence in it which makes me not wanna buy it. Non the less great hunt an love watching these hunts an it’s no shade thrown to anyone using the ozonics. Just a genuine question.
@@dallas5528 uh because they’re sponsored and literally get free shit. Ozonics does work, but there’s a limit to them. If it’s real windy they can’t grab your scent as easily.
jVjarum UH like I said remind me why I should buy ozonics? I get why he’s using it because he gets free stuff I understand that but as a normal hunter I wouldn’t get paid to use it an why would someone use it if it only works if it’s really windy 🤷🏻♂️ I ain’t talkin crap on anyone that uses it either these are real concerns an questions. But why pay 600$ on something that might work if it’s really windy. I’m asking these questions because I’m on the fence on buying one myself an don’t want another shelf ornament.
Wait five hours! Catch up to him! Watch him tip over! Unreal hunt.
The intro song to videos by Midwest Whitetail gives me chills down my spine and is almost like buck fever. I don't know what it is but it is a special feeling. LOL
Kaleb stud of a deer buddy. Glad y’all got on him. I’m in the dumps right now too. Hopefully, this week ends up like half of yours. Good people to come back and help
Janman 1 Thank you! Time in the stand will pay off! The day I harvested this deer I had zero expectations. Just keep grinding!
Janman 1, best of luck to you!
Dude was crazy nervous. Breath man!😅 I get real nervous, but this was on a whole nother level. Lol
Face to face with a mature buck eye level, talk about an adrenaline rush! We appreciate the comment Keith, good luck the rest of this season.
Great opening intro Mike. Thanks for the encouragement. Glad that I'm not the only one! Easy to get discouraged for sure.
Keep after it San, hopefully it takes shape for you soon. Good luck!
@@MidwestWhitetailVideos taking Mike Reed's advice "grinded" it out. Ended up taking a nice 8pt in new spot. Thanks for the encouragement!
Congratulations Guys!!! I've always been told when your getting down or thinking about it stay 30 extra minutes then proceed . I don't know what hapoend there cause you didn't really explain it .
Anyhow totally cool hunt .
Nice job Caleb!!!
Awesome hunts!
Incredible experience, congratulations
Colin, we appreciate the kind words and support. Best of luck finishing out this season.
Congrats!
Thank you Curt!
Man..i love the 60 frames..looks so real
Great hunt. Thank God you waited
Tim, we appreciate the support sir. Kaleb definitely made the right move on backing out and waiting. Despite the arrow being behind the shoulder, it was a touch far forward with the quartering way angle. We learned a lot from the track and thankfully Kaleb was able to recover the buck. Good luck to you the rest of this season.
he's a damn nice deer, it just sucks he was out there with an arrow in him for 5-6 hours.
Zak B, we agree with you. Reality is it didn't go perfect and we've always committed to showing things the way they happened with the hope that someone can learn something from the experiences we go through. Thankfully, Kaleb made the right decision to back out and in the end it worked out. Good luck to you the rest of this season.
Congrats what a nice mature buck!
Thank you Simon, have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Breathe, in scuba diving we practice 5sec inhale hold 3 sec 5 sec exhale hold 3 sec
It works, but hope adrenaline never goes away 😅
Mike Reid is a cool cat. By the way the dude kills some giants!!
Jonah, you're spot on! Mike is a great hunter but even better guy. Good luck this season.
👏👏👏hade euy lah si emang nembakna👍
That webbed buck is awesome
Holy crap man . . Just subscribed. . . Awesome stuff!
Mike, at 3:44 you say at these slow times it's easy to get discouraged. I wish where i hunt in mid Missouri, i could experience half the quality bucks you have during slow times. I enjoy your show. But you may want to choose your words with the thought that most of your viewers don't have access to the great hunting you have in the best part of the country.
Uncle Moe, we appreciate the insight and comment. I think Mike was more or less referring to the time of year in general, which typically results in "slower" hunts. We will keep what you said in mind moving forward and as always, thank you for the support. Good luck the rest of this season!
@@MidwestWhitetailVideos thanks, i get that. It just makes him sound a little spoiled. I know thats not the case. I enjoy him and Jareds blogs.
Where is Bill?! We need and update from him!
Retired
He’s hunting off camera this year.
@@normanbontrager6999 or he's the Camera man 🤔
Might be, just going by what Josh said in one of his videos.
Agreed. Last I heard from him he was looking to try buy land to start it all over again. But that was a pretty good bit back and haven’t seen another video from him.
This was some amazing footage. Wait five hours. Track the buck. Catch up to him! Watch him tip over lol wtf
BEAUTIFUL DEERS
They’re incredible animals. Have a great thanksgiving Jonathan.
@@MidwestWhitetailVideos HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOH TOO
Awesome bucks guys!! Mike, what’s yours and Jared’s main strategy for hunting yalls farm for Marino so often and not putting pressure on it??? Y’all constantly see bucks on that place and if I was hunting a spot that much, deer sightings would plummet quick!!
This farm sets up pretty well for regular hunting. I’ve had farms like what you mention where after a few hunts, you have to give it a break cause you can push the deer out easily. This farm is about 200 acres. We have 100 acres of it that is essentially sanctuary which helps a lot. The remainder of the farm has great ground level cover, tall grass and thick sections a small scrub trees. We have mowed access trails that let us sneak around. We sneak in and out of a few select areas to hunt. We rarely bump deer when we are there with the way it sets up. Allows for some regular hunting especially this time of year. Good luck!
Thanks mike!! I appreciate your answers when I have questions. You always take time to answer them!! Hope y’all have a Happy Thanksgiving
2 bad shots on a deer, time to practice...the shot on the ground was awesome
Its the camera and "HAVING" to get that buck....
Bringing a hot babe on the recovery really takes away from the deer.
My goodness... what camera do you use?. It's like I'm there with you. Very nice
Awesome hunts fellas! I would love to kill a mature whitetail on the ground!! That takes it to another level for sure! Happy for you getting a second shot off. Always great to hear people give God the glory! Hunting is like life. Peaks and Valleys and being able to persevere! 👍🏻
Watch @thehuntingpublic they do it all the time lol
👍🏻
Jason, we appreciate the support. Pretty awesome that Caleb and Matt were able to pull that off being in the middle of setting up the stands like they were. Great perspective and thank you for the comment. Good luck to you the rest of this season.
Kaleb - Congrats on the deer. I believe I know where this is and think that is the same deer that I shot and never recovered 3 weeks ago. I sent you a message on FB, just to see if I could verify and put my mind to rest.
Just replied to ya brother!
Michael, sounds like Kaleb got ahold of you. Glad you guys were able to get in contact. Good luck the rest of this season and thank you for the support!
@Michael Collins. Ok we all got to know if it was the same deer. Hope you got to put your mind to rest if it was and sorry if it wasn’t, but that means your big buck may still be out there. Please let us know. Good luck rest of the season.
@Roy McDavid yes we do think it was the same deer, had a hole smaller than my broadhead so possible failure to open the expandable, but still didn't make a good shot on him. Kaleb was great and super helpful. I'm glad the deer was still alive and gave Kaleb the opportunity, and not dead from my shot and never found.
Great. Glad you don’t have to worry about him laying dead somewhere. I have had deer get away and it sucks.
Awesome hunts! As crazy as this sounds....was Caleb’s deer young? Like 3.5-4.5? Just curious? 👀 Congrats on everyone’s success!
Caleb Mason’s deer we believe to be 5.5 based on size. We will check the teeth as well.
Arkansas Reaper first off thank you for watching, we appreciate the support. Regarding Caleb's deer, like Matt said below they believed him to be 5.5+. Kaleb Greiner's deer is who I think your comment was referring to. It's very possible that the deer was in that age range, it was the first time that Kaleb had seen the buck. Interestingly enough the guys found an entry and exit wound that had began to heal from a previous shot. Kaleb ended up being contacted by a nearby hunter after watching the show and told Kaleb that the buck had been shot roughly 3 weeks before Kaleb harvested him. So his smaller body size could be attributed to that but it's tough to say. Thanks for the question and kind words! Good luck!
What doe bleat did you guys use when calling , sounded really good, thank you, great deer
Pretty crazy to think they name quarterbacks after big bucks. Ironic that Dan Marino could never make it to the end of the season unlike the deer Marino😆. Looked like a little double throat patch on the buck shot from the ground?
Well if only Marino the Buck would tear his Achilles like Dan always did, then someone may finally have a shot at him
Yes - double throat patch on Caleb’s buck. Pretty cool!
Marino is still alive? Y'all been filming that deer for the past 5 years! (Atleast it seems like)
Yes, it’s been forever! Haha. This is the fourth year. Bought farm in 2017 and had him come under first hunt. Struggle bus. Good luck!
Will cattle effect the way deer travel? I was seeing a lot of deer but the property i hunt the owner moved cattle over and haven't seen much at all.
On a lease we used to hunt for years, when the cattle were moved in, they ate a lot of the underbrush and grasses, eliminating much of the brushy cover and the travel corridors changed to nearby brush ravines and fencerows that were never being used before... check that out on your place.
Joey, I mentioned the cattle because they broke fence on the neighbors and were in the main bedding area of the small timber I was hunting. I let the farmer know and they had to walk in the timber to get them out. Thanks man!
Shoulda called him “righty”
I thought Merino was killed last year and the year before...
Someone, please get a semi-auto and dispatch that deer!
Haha. That's what I thought
Haha! I’m starting to feel the same way!
Should have practiced more. First shot high and left. Second shot left and probably not high due to the underestimate of the LONG distance.
Whats Bill been up to all fall?
What is crp?
Conservative Reserve Program. Basically govt. pay owner to let the land go and restore to natural conditions. Help clean water and animals I believe there’s more to it, just what I was told over the year’s
So I'm in northern mn and I have had 4 really nice bucks coming around my cameras before season and now all I'm seeing is does and no bucks. Are they in lockdown and where should I be hunting if in that lockdown. I've been hunting the bedding areas have seen alot of does and now no bucks.
I would also like to ask a question on hunting near those bedding areas with acorns. Are those good places to just be waiting?
Yes, very common for buck patterns to change, especially on trail cams and on the stand. They are in lockdown, every 2 to 3 days these bucks will search for the next doe in heat. Try to hunt near bedding areas/thickets, food sources or whatever is a good doe spot. You just got to be patient, the lockdown is tough hunting. Hope this helps or answers your question
Find the doe and any good food source
If they mention marino again, I'm out!
Someday, and hopefully soon you will hear about the chapter closing on “M_rino.” (We didn’t say it!) Hambone 1, hope you’ve had a great season sir and we appreciate the support!
@@MidwestWhitetailVideos filled a tag on a nice185lb 8 point in MA. Waiting to fill my second tag on something that weighs over 200. I like the reply... Going back now to finish the video.
MARINO
I'm out
Awesome job. I only hunt on the ground. Y’all go watch me smash some public land deer with a bow. 👊💪
Sucks that a deer has to suffer for 5-6 hours. Good deer
Jacob, we agree it's not the way you want it to happen. Kaleb missed his mark slightly forward but fortunately it worked out and he was able to recover the deer. Good luck to you this season, we appreciate the support.
@@MidwestWhitetailVideos true no ones perfect
What happened to bill
That first buck is going to be a stud in a year or 2. Definitely not mature.
Dylan, thanks for the comment and we appreciate the support! Good luck the rest of this season.
the sound of those hoyts are awful lol SO LOUD!!!
Most of the Hoyt's I've heard seem to be silent. Wonder why his was so loud?
@@christophermix6845 yeah idk. but that was so loud it hurt my ears w/ headphones on lol i shoot a mathews-VXR and that sucker is super quite.
Yah it was haha the buck heard that 2nd shot. Nice the VXR appears to be silent on camera, I'm just shooting a old z7. I'd like to try VXR or a Bowtech realm but I'm afraid I'll end up buying one lol.
Well....when you shoot a Hoyt it’s only fair to give the animal a fair chance and not put any noise reduction on them. If we did that there wouldn’t be anything walk the Earth again. #RedKingdom #Hoyt4Ever. Btw, I shoot a RX-3. 👍🏻
@@thereaper4396 well if I feel like the animal has a chance to make it out I'm not going to take the shot. As long as they stay 50yds out or in brush that's their fair chance haha. Honestly this is the first Hoyt I've noticed to be loud.
Small body buck the guy killed at the end, probably a 3.5 year old, his antlers would've gotten bigger!
Poor 2nd shot. Hate to see a deer suffer that long after. You lost another viewer. THP is where it’s at.
Ethan, we agree that we never wish to see a deer suffer. However, we also understand that things don't always go as planned no matter how hard someone tries. Kaleb handled everything after the shot exactly how someone should and thankfully recovered the animal. Hopefully you never have to be in that position and we wish you the best of luck this season.
I want to see action not talking.
Very risky shot. Very disrespectful.
