- According to legend, French race car driver René Dreyfus (winner of the Monaco Grand Prix in 1930) was in a liquor-fueled game of poker with Swiss playboy Adalbert Bodé in Paris in 1934. Short on cash, Dreyfus bet his 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia race car and lost it to Bodé. Shortly thereafter, it found its way to the bottom of a lake, where it stayed for the rest of the century.

When Bodé returned to Switzerland, he was stopped at the border and told that he could not take the car with him. As gambler’s fortunes tend to wax and wane, Bodé was notable to get the cash together to get the car out of customs, and it was marked for destruction like any other confiscated contraband. Being a different time, Swiss authorities decided the easiest, if not the most ecologically friendly, method of disposal would be to dump it into the Lago Maggiore.
There the masterpiece of French design sat until 2009, when it was finally recovered. Though many people knew the car was somewhere in the lake, no one had yet committed to bringing it up. Unfortunately, its reemergence was brought on by tragedy when a member of the local salvage diving club was beaten to death by three young people in a street attack. In an effort to raise money for a charity dedicated to preventing youth violence, the club committed to bringing up the car.

Officine Undici nothing wrong with it, just needs carb adjusted.

Oof

Lmmfao. Hahaha.
@@abcsam i agree,Honda roasted a car company by reving their fart sounds
For real, old Bugattis were run to the ground by gypsies who loved to drive them. No wonder most of them were worthless junk by the end of the second world war
Hmm 2009 the same year they brought this Bugatti out of the lake an insurance fraud was committed on a Bugatti being driven into another lake. Crazy timing
The Auto Hot-Shot yeah that turds name is Andy house. He said he swerved to avoid a pelican... laughable
I’ve met Andy. At the time I didn’t know he was behind that famous story lol just funny that I can say I shook the hand of the guy that went to jail for driving a Bugatti into a lake. 😂 One of two in the world??
Jared Lumbert yeah dude got hit with insurance fraud

I wonder if Tavarish was bidding on this car to get the cheapest Bugatti in the world.
Probably was to be fair, he can fix anything
I think fire damage is more his shtick.

😭😭😭 sad story all around. Glad it came up.
Bugattis are a work of art, an engineering masterpiece, and to that alone, hats off for Mr Ettore
At 0:41 - What a near perfect description/comparison between Bugatti the Car, and Bugatti the Person.
This is so amazing, such an emotional, riveting story from Rene' Dryefus, Grand Prix race driver to Adalbert Bode' professional gambler, customs officials....the awesome instinct and acquisition of Peter Mullin. See it in Oxnard Ca. at Mullin Automotive Museum....possibly the best exhibits in the world!
Wow what a story. Makes you appreciate the short time we all have here. Since thanks for all the good content and especially for sharing stuff like this foundation.
This story is an absolute beutiful one.

Did that guy just say...cars are not art...???
My fortune cookie said "Writing is a tool, not an art," and my reading teacher started crying.
Saw this Bugatti at the Peter mullin auto museum last weekend, truly is something
Simply a beautiful piece of history...

Had to watch this. It was mentioned in an abandoned places photograph I was looking at
Great story and presentation
That being said...

Great storytelling
I clicked on this thinking it was the bugatti veyron that drove into a lake a few years back im kind of disappointed 😂
Same !! 😂, I still stayed and watched though.
Me too !
It's a much better story than that.
Here's what happened to that one

Very nice video. Thank you fro posting. The killers of the Damiano Tamagni only received 10 years for his murder.
Robb reports CZcams is a hidden gem
Who knows what the real story is but I'm glad it out for people to see.Nice man to honor the young man and attaching it to this car. 👍
Interesting 😎😎
Ive always heard at the bottom of the Kanawha river above london wv or what we call london locks there's a model T that fell through the ice. When the river freezes over people use to drive cars on it. This one fell through. Ive heard people have seen it, ive heard its never been seen. My grandfather did confirm people did in fact use to drive cars on the river. He came from Alabama in the late 30s early 40s, having only seen snow once in his life, a river froze with people driving cars on it really shocked him. Rare sight for a Alabama man in his early 20s
Wow!
Nice dude!!
Great story.
An incredible story.
Very good sir very nice to 🚗
What a story 👋🏼
Those these stories I think there up there if not better than barn find stories
Such a beautiful car but a sad story to it
Did you at least test drive it?
sad story same the old factory left abandoned😢
Wooooow 😱
I painted this story as a Memorial for Damiano Tamagni on two parts of an Atalante. Tragedy.!
That was powerful
Ae car ke stories sunkar mere aankhon mein aansu aage
What a terrible waste of beautifully shaped Cold Rolled Steel.
Beauty simply morphed into a different shape... endless beauty. So no, I wouldn't consider it "a terrible waste".
It’s beauty Immortalized in a museum for hundreds of thousands to admire for many years to come. I couldn’t think of a better place for her to truly shine.
Imagine if the lost Type 57 Atlantic, worth millions, was also sunk into a lake. It would take so much to find it.
Perhaps I am wrong but this car was exhibited after restoration in Villa d'Este Concours d'elegance.
A perfect subject for a detective story! 😊
It will buff out
Is it normal that i found this story super sad a the end?
That guy looks just like Ralph Lauren’
I wish I could give 10 likes to this video! Amazing

Is that the same aerolift they built on restoration garage?
Really weird story on why the Swiss border police dumped the Bugatti in the lake?
The story of this car is reasonably straightforward and much more about money than sentiment. In 1936, the owner stored the car at a boatyard in Switzerland, but the import taxes on the French registered vehicle had not been paid. The Swiss authorities found out where it was and confiscated it. By law, it had to be destroyed, but in 1937 it was decided to put it in the lake at the end of a long chain (this was so it was still possible to retrieve it). After many years, the chain rusted through and the Bugatti fell deeper into the lake. It was found in 1967, but not retrieved until 2009. The René Dreyfus connection seems far fetched and way out of character. The T22's chassis number is 2461. It is said that there is another Bugatti with this identity in a Japanese collection, but the Lake Maggiore car is the real one.
It's in surprisingly bad shape, deep cold fresh water generally preserves things fairly well but this car looks terrible, I wonder if the water was super acidic....
Lucky it wasn’t melted down to build Geiger counters. Low background steel is valuable.
It's sad that they don't reformed it
Wow x2
Bloody hell....
I am a true believer that mankind shares a real, almost spiritual bond with the automotive kind.
Ha he beat Louwman to the punch at the auction...Now its not 10 miles from my house but all the way in Cali... too bad
This is for the Lady Bug version. It took two years and how much effort for it to look like a wrap that could have been put on to it?
The real chitty chitty bang bang
Bro that's so sad🙁
The way he says "romantic information"
This is bizar
2019 the divo in the lake
SAVE IT! SAVE IT!
Wait a guy from the Netherlands wanted to buy this? The idea that this car could've gone to my country! Lol!
The lady of the lake was actually about 30 feet away

@@yammmit Ettore Bugatti** ,give people a break.
Gray filter Guy The cars aren’t called ‘Ettore Bugattis’ so correcting it like that would be retarded.

Will it ever be possible to run it again
iwona jakubowska you would need a new motor definitely. Although you might be able to use the body panels if you wanted an ugly bugatti
Please, restore it.
I was about to make a joke about Ed not buying it then I realized it was a different car
I don't really see Bugatti as a French company. I'm sure it used to be in Molsheim which was in Germany then annexed after the war by France. Now it's owned by VW. I may be wrong about all that.
DORALEUS! I am the lady... of the lake
no ones talking about the bugatti found in amsterdam?
I thought this was about the Veyron that drove into a lake
I hope they fix the car
@edbolian You’re gonna love this story if you’re not already familiar.
That car needs a restoration video.
Why is there a video of a 1933/1934 Ford at the dry lakes playing??😂
Whoops, wrong Bugatti.
I think the missing wheel should atleast be put back on
Let's go fishing for cars because that makes sense
Bugattis and lakes=Mustangs and crowds
Is that a Lamborghini?
I know where the second Bugatti Atlantic is, it is in my neighborhood just 3 miles away I a collection

Wait only two atlantics???
I thought it was the Bugatti that crashed in the water...oh well
