  • When you file for bankruptcy, you are required to list all of your assets and indicate their values. To value your home, you may obtain an appraisal or speak with a real estate agent about sales in your area. You can check various websites online to determine the value of your car and other items. The objective is to determine what someone would be willing to pay for your assets so you can determine whether it makes sense to file for bankruptcy. You may determine that your assets are worth too much for you to file for bankruptcy.

how do you determine if something is actually your asset at all when married? for example, would a home and cars in your spouses name (both title and loan) only be considered your asset simply bc you are married?
