The blue eyes of the reindeer! I recently learned that their eyes turn from brown in summer to blue in winter. The blue helps them see better in the low light of arctic days. They are the only mammals on Earth to have this adaptation 🤩

As someone with no sense of direction, I am amazed how they know their way around the tundra. Getting to the town when there’s nothing but snow surrounding then for 186 miles. 😳
I get lost almost every time I go in our little shopping malls, once I get to this country I lose all hope of going anywhere😂😂😂
As someone who has visited the tundra, I can only say that it’s not an easy life. It’s so cold out there that you don’t shiver but your body aches in pain. Three days and I spent most of it indoors whereas these people are constantly working for their survival and the survival of their animals.

Adapt or evolve maybe their skin is not the same as ours anymore same as those water nomads in Southeast Asia where they can breath longer in the water.

I am hooked watching this series, how we take for granted everything we can acquire like eating hot meals everyday . Really amazed by the simplicity of life far from civilization.
Life far from civilization… until the go shopping. Then they are not far from civilization. Fake af.
While they may not have the material things we associate with the word civilisation, they have things which the "civilised" world sadly lacks......peace, harmony, tight-knit families and freedom. Which way of life is the more civilised? I think their way beats ours hands down. I know I would never survive more than a few hours out there, and I know the physical reality is brutally hard, but I envy the bedrock of their civilisation.

Same here. I'm used to eating cook meat, hot shower and cook our food in the kitchen not in one room that would drive me nuts. Heck I don't even fry anything in our home. I cook it in our backyard. Can't stand the smell of fry fish etc.
At first glance you'd see a simple life out of necessity...but at the end when the lady speaks and says - "...no shops, no temptations, no waste time...", then you realize they know more than most people in this world.
No temptations, as they drink sweetened condensed milk.
We've got no idea of what real life is.

My great grandfather came from this life. He moved to the US and married an Irish woman who gave birth to my grandfather who moved further in and fought in WW1 and WW2. He married a German woman who gave birth to my mother who then gave birth to me. I look at the pictures of my great grandfather. It's so endearing to me how strong he was. I live in constant fear that one day I will lose everything. I doubt this family worries that much. It's an odd feeling I can't describe watching this video.

Grew up on an Indian Reservation and I think I have way much easier but, its kind of heartwarming to see people living the same I used to. Not in teepees but like in put together structures with the bare minimum. A bed, a stove, a table, and some chairs. To me its reminds me that at the end of the day their people trying to survive in the only they know how. Living the same why I do now with what they have and making their living same way but with herding. They live a hard life and they try and make it easier and happy as they can. Wouldn’t you?

No one keeps them forcefully in reservation, most of siberian ugro-finnic nations live in cities and have modern life.

My husband was stationed in Alaska for 2 yrs...there was ALOT to get used to! That was as much of the cold as I ever want to experience!! Much respect to these people!!!!

I found my self a new obsession i am hooked on this series and plenty more like this i've learned to appreciate what god has blessed me with and i respect the woman and men for the role they each play in there daily living they are dedicated to their reindeer and each other in such extreme bitterly cold harsh weather god bless them all

What a fascinating and simple way of life! It really shows what the bare necessities are when it comes to not just surviving but even having a decent life. When she was saying, no shop, no temptation, no wasted time, I was scrolling through an online shopping app, and I was guilty as hell 😂
Life's what you make it. This way of life could be modernized. You don't have to worry about government trying to ruin your life if you're away from so called civilization.

They're family though. Most people would help their family with car troubles if they were on a trip together.
All that way for such a small amount of groceries, crazy! I love being able to see how others live, it really can turn a ungrateful day into a thankful one. I don't think I would survive living this way, these are strong people!
Edit 07/05/23 : I would just like to say that I did see they bought other items like yogurt and other foods. I guess I'm just so used to seeing massive carts of groceries in local marts for families. And to my understanding, they eat a lot of high protein/fat so they require less "junk" like we city folk do!

You know, there is absolutely no reason for them to live there-there are big cities and towns with everything, including schools for their kids, they CHOOSE not to. They do have a choice, they can easily move. they choose to live their traditional lifestyle.
I'm even more amazed at the dogs, how they're able to trot and play in that subzero snow, totally adapted to the weather! As a native floridian with a chihuahua, it marvels me 😂

There is something touching about this lifestyle, the close bond they must have to manage and live together. The food and everything is so strange to me but the people seem lovely and the children are adorable.

My grandmother is native Siberian, unfortunately she passed away when I was a kid. I'm grateful for everything she taught me and I'm happy to watch this video tonundertand more how people live in cold weather. I enjoy winters more than summers I can't tolerate heat so much, something is pulling me towards living in Russia and I don't know what it is.

They remind me of indigenous communities living in the mountains in my country. Except that they're not nomadic and have learned to settle and farm crops.

When it said that they move every two or three days, it struck me that here was a very effective way for the rest of us to solve the problem with hoarding or just accumulating too much stuff. If I knew I had to pack up everything I own and move in two days, believe me, a HUGE haul would be headed for Goodwill! I would make minamalists look like hoarders!

It was humbling to see how mundane items I take for granted require an epic improvisational journey across punishing landscapes for these communities. I can't imagine the level of preparation needed to predict their families' needs months in advance and gather what limited provisions are available from remote trading outposts.
At the same time, the ingenuity in rationalizing resources and minimizing waste was inspiring. You could feel their deep appreciation for simple conveniences, evident in how excited the children were for treats like condensed milk. It was a poignant reminder of what's truly essential.
Beyond the captivating visuals of loaded-down sleds traversing frozen tundra and rivers, I appreciated the cultural insights woven throughout. You provided a respectful glimpse into how their provisioning traditions connect them to the land and reinforce self-reliance and strong family bonds.
While their supply journeys are utterly unique, at its core this highlighted our shared human needs for sustenance and comfort - just accomplished through vastly different means in the extreme Arctic. An illuminating window into survival skills from another era and ecosystem.
This is an amazing program. The life is so hard. The men and women are brave, courageous, and strong. The children are so capable. For them it’s a constant fight for survival, hence people don’t have time to waste and misbehave. They learn patience and tolerance. There’s team effort, team spirit, and camaraderie. Those people are loving towards each other no money can buy that quality. It is a great lesson for all of us. I would love to give each family some warm clothes and blankets. I wish the government can be generous to them.
The beauty in these humble, happy, healthy and hearty people is something very special! I love the mom who says with cheekiness and twinkle in her eyes, "We shop once and live easy... no waste in time and no temptations." She absolutely knows the value in her family's lifestyle. I have to show my jaded boys the little Arctic boy who looked with huge eyes and wonder at all the "luxuries" on those 7 shelves in that simple one room store. Maybe then they'll appreciate our local Costco warehouse and not complain about the lack of latest trending snacks and junk food. Perspective is powerful.

Gas in russia is cheap especially in siberia, it's not that expensive to go grocery, it's just time consuming
if I had to travel that far for the next shop, I would try to load up containers full of groceries.
Such a beautiful and strong culture! I hold so much respect for them; few people here in the US are nearly as resilient as this entire community.
