Got that T shirt when my SWB XJ6 blew it's bottom end into bean tin material on the M65 many years ago.
The shells were as thin as a bean tim when l took them out, the crank looked like a shredder and basically it was a scrap job.
I swapped the engine out and a mate bought it off me to restore the whole car.
Never had a MK 2 but have had nine Jaguars and love them all except the latest XJ.

Just had a similar situation with my recently purchased Jaguar Mk II (240). Despite assurance from the supposed specialist I'd bought it from that the mechanicals were strong, a different garage examined the car after it ceased to fire up. Finally got a look at the head and block there a couple of days ago, and was astonished at the amount of corrosion present. Since the repair costs were not far off getting a new engine built, I opted to upgrade the 2.4 to a 3.4 - that issue blew my proposed budget out of the water, so no respray... but at least it'll drive.

Sorry to hear about that, must have sucked to find that out. As you say though you get to have a bigger engine now 😁

I did a 3.8S up. All, except engine, which I was assured was in good health. Road test, yep, sump full of mayonnaise. Dispirited, I sold it to a guy who makes C Type replicas. He only wanted the rego.

I’m in a similar situation. Just coming to the end of a 8 year restoration project on my 1962 2.4 and unfortunately it’s burning ALOT of oil on the over run. I have a terrible feeling the motor needs to come back out. Might replace with a 3.8 😎

Im in the same boat, except mines a 2.4 (240) was thinking of a 4.0 swap from a x300, but not sure if it will fit, will be watching your progress, ive got mine parked up with garage doors locked and key thrown in a lake 🙂

Unless that engine is some sort of gem with matching numbers and all that, just get an XJ6 lump.

Get a 4.2 EFI big valve out of an S3 XJ6 and drop that in with 2" SU's (There is a fair bit of part swapping involved like the water pump, Oil filter housing and electric tacho etc, Etc) So much torqueyer and powerful than a 3.4, I've got a 1964 3.8 MK2 which was running great untill it dropped a valve and i've got an S3 4.2 to fit into it whilst i rebuild the 3.8, It will be interesting to compare the 2, I have a feeling i will just leave the 4.2 in as it's a non matching number car anyway👌

just discovered my 3.4l block has a crack in it and it's already been brazed once and failed. so at least a new-to-me block. getting new rings, main and rod bearings, timing chain and tensioner, oil pump and having the driveline balanced. this will set me back about $20,000 to have it all done at a shop.
bought it from an ex-race car driver, now dealer that does restoration on vintage ferraris and other vintage exotics. has a huge race car museum too. owner said "he won't sell a car that has not been thoroughly examined and in perfect condition.". said he hires people to drive them hundreds of miles over california roads to make sure they are reliable.
the car overheated on the way home... and soon found out about the cracked block when the leaking head gasket was removed. the dealer's in scott's valley ca. don't go near him.

Whats happened to the engine that makes you think it needs a total rebuild? Whats the oil pressure like on it? Although its a big engine the XK motor is actually a really simple engine to work on and well within your capabilities based on the other jobs you have done on the car.
