The chorus begins as a series of antiphonal questions and answers contrasting high and low voices, and develops into a full harmony with the words “The Lord of hosts”, “He is the King of glory”. This chorus is the beginning of the celebratory section leading to the Hallelujah Chorus at the end of Part II.
Psalm 24: 7 - 10
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of Glory shall come in. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
