  • This is some footage I was privileged to take with the VW Outlaw Flat 4 drag race club at Bugjam36 2023. I spend some time in the pits chatting tosome of the racers, videoing their VW Bug Drag cars and a little on track action.

@@PeoplesCar it's down to weather mostly. Working outside with power tools and welders even I'm not that crazy 🤣. As soon as we have a few nice dry days I definitely intend getting back on it

@@bigalsvwratrod7346 Yeah me too 🤣 I think its a vw thing, owning cars with no heating in winter, and that try and fumigate you to death meaning you have driven everywhere with the window down for the last 25 years no matter what the weather or car you drive now. Propper pi$$es the missis off that 😅👍

I know it's not a fair comparison but I've been watching some of the Honda racing and they are chasing 7 second passes in 25 year old street cars.
They are using all the latest tech to get the power down and it certainly shows.
When you think the legendary Moody pulled a 9 second pass in the 80's, i'm surprised the outlaws are still where they are.
I know they have a bunch of reg's, which you obviously need, but maybe that's holding them back?

Yeah i know what your saying. I guess there is only so much oomph you can ring out of a flat vw motor. Some of the front WD watercooled stuff atm are laying down crazy times and does seem to be a shift in the vw scene as younger blood comes in with more affordable vehicles etc. I'm not sure what regs vwff have actually, might have to look into that but I do find it kinda strange racing a head up group with 500bhp turbo motors against NA 1776, because what's the draw to the weekend if your pretty much guaranteed to go out in the first run? maybe i misunderstood how it works but still prefer it to bracket racing lol. Glad they do too because ultimately I'm not as bothered about watching vw Lupos going down the track 😅 Tx for watching dude 😊👍

One of the big problems nowadays is the cost of parts..

@@jonnymarriage5962 Oh absolutely. I built a budget 1776 with my father back in back in day but never really had funds to go bigger as planned. I considered all sorts from high capacity type 1 and even some type4 setups. The market cost kinda outgrew my small wallet and in the end bought a hi spec 1776 off a mate. It was then I accidentally came accross a subaru engine from a type 3 project. Back then it was more than double the bhp for less than half the cost and the reason I embraced the darkside. It just got a bit out of hand. 😅 It's the very air Cooled motor and the simplicity of the bug that people love and why I think there is still so much mixed feelings about alternate engine setups. If it were embraced more then we might be getting times close to the Honda and the like. Trying to retain that type 1 heritage and classification for racing etc ultimately makes it cost prohibitive to go much faster. Its nice that we can all choose our own root to horsepower though and still meet and chill out over a beer and camp fire a few times in a rainy frield. Love that unity 😊👍
