Okay! Loud and clear! I'll still do some Q&A on this channel during builds. Chop-Chop Q&A will still go to Patreon, however.
CZcams's made changes. You now have to turn on channel notifications to get notified of new channel content! It's the bell shaped button next to the 'subscribed' button. It's shaped like a bell because a ding-dong came up with the idea.

I have to say, it's guys like you that have gotten me to start and try to use all these old files I have laying around. Thank you so much for sharing all this knowledge.
I don't make knives and i don't know anything about making knives, but I find myself coming back around to your channel every few months just to watch your work. You are an artist sir, and your love for the craft and appreciation of lessons learned from failure are very evident. Keep it up!
I think an appropriate comment section is necessary so that people from all ages can watch your videos. For me I watch your channel and look at the comments so that I can learn about forging, not see bad comments from others...Thanks Green Beetle!!! You make great videos! Cade
I love how you always make yocurself out to be a rookie and have so much humility when in my opinion your one of the best on CZcams I love all your knives man keep up the good work
I can't believe people would give you any crap. I think your channel is great and has helped me a lot with starting out on my knife making journey. I would like to Thank You for having this kink of info available.
Your comment section, your rules. Keep It clean to keep the trolls away. Good work as always!!
I moderated a huge message board for several years back in the day so I empathize with your trials. Your channel is great, I would keep on the same path as you have in the past.
What people say reflects on them alone, not on you. Just ignore them and keep going. Your work is excellent and so is the spirit with which it is done. Bravo! :)
your fish hoof knife was really cool, you should do the same concept with keys, like for a house. that would be a pretty cool pattern all polished up
This is actually my favorite channel on CZcams and I always look forward to your next video!
Great channel. I have watched several of your videos and enjoyed each one. You bring great info with great humor.
Simply outstanding, I keep watching your realisation, great work !!!
I have never made or been interested in making a knife but MAN! I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!
Great video! I think we can all appreciate that you care enough about the viewers to ask their opinion about the comment section. I would say just keep doing what you're doing!
I think you do beautiful work Steve. I hope in time I'll be able to work steel as good as you. Thanx for all the lessons.
I'm glad that you curate the comments section. Filth has no place here!
Great video!
Honestly one of my favorite blacksmithing/blade making channels on youtube. You really motivate me to get into this. I feel you should keep the comments fair, like you said, you can be mean and you can be wrong, just not both. Keep it up mate, you are amazing.
Personally I’m glad you keep the trolls off. It’s YOUR channel, do what you want, I’ll still check out your work.
Nice re-purpose of the file. The design is beautiful. Inspired.
A good comment section...people talking about you or your work is always good.
The vibe of the channel will set the standard.
The way you respond, where necessary, will set the vibe.
I personally hate it when the channel dismisses, belittles, (or variations of both) commenters, unless you do it in an unattached kind of way. Its a fine art, and a thin line, safest way is to respond only to the positive ones.
Worst than a swamp like comment section there is only one thing..."Comments are disabled for this video"
Comments are a microcosmos of real life anyway.
Keep it real!
I'm a new subscriber and figured out that this stuff is amazing!! I'm a fisherman so I really enjoyed your knife made out of fish hooks. Can't wait for great new content!!
Just stumbled upon your videos. This is awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome razor, and I look forward to the potential of a sword video, but for all practical purpose your knife forging is fantastic to watch.
That razor came out amazing! It looks really cool great job! And I wouldn't filter too many of the comments. Yes if they are really bad get rid of them, but you should have to take time out of your day to babysit people when you can be doing much more proactive things. Keep up the great work!
a good comments section should be informative, inquisitive and have *constructive* criticism.
nevertheless, I am no blacksmith and come because I enjoy watching you work and love a good blade. Keep up the good work and thanks
Mate love your videos looking at getting into forging so i watch you posts. Keep up the good work, Kieran Australia
I enjoy the comment section on here (after you have weeded some of it out). Especially when I would like to eventually have time to dedicate to knife making/metal work. Just as you said, there are some others on here that have great tips to improve these skills.
"A Clean, well lighted place..." Hemming way right? Props! Also, cool knife!
nice
if only you had moderators on your channel. having a good discussion on the Internet, especially on a public open forum like YT is almost impossible. I really don't know that you can improve it much from where it is now, but I will say that this channel is largely free from some of the nonsense you see in other places. Keep up the good work. We appreciate it
How would one segue "rape-y" comments into any of your videos? Lol, seriously. You're correct, anonymity does provide quite the soapbox for weirdos. I would say: monitor the personal attacks, but let those who are making fools of themselves genuinely be.
wayne russell you could argue that personal attacks are just anonymous people making a fool of themselves. most people online are cowards so they wouldn't follow through, so they end up being simply an edgy kid.
You are doing a good job explaining your work.
I viewed one of your videos some time ago in a string of recommendations, but somehow forgot to subscribe. So glad I finally stumbled upon your channel again!
Always interesting, and entertaining. And I like the way you edit your work.
On a different note, I have heard of several artists use an "Etch-O-Matic" with makers mark stencils, the results were wonderful. I have found a couple used on EBay, I don't think they are still being made? But I haven't researched the matter.
Thanks again for all the great videos, keep up the good work!
beautiful work as always
Thanks for all the videos. You, along with Man at Arms, Walter Sorrells, and a couple of others have inspired me to get together some tools and start making knives. Having a lot of fun with it so far.
As for your question about the comments section: I tend to avoid the comments for the most part, because I don't think most people are willing to take the time monitor or curate the comments, so they are a vast wasteland of obnoxiousness, rather than places where ideas and information can be exchanged in a helpful manner. It sounds like I need to go back and start looking through yours, as they could be a gold mine to a smithing n00b like myself.
Thanks again!
I love these q and a videos where you do a blade and talk
agree with your curated philosophy. on topic discussion is welcome, block trolls.
Thanks for answering my question :) beautiful blade aswell!
I do not think there's troll people in this type of channel, I like this.
Good work, keep it up!
Love your channel really much. Don't worry about the comment section. Keep it how it is right now. Block the trolls and the dirty/rude comments and encourage the positive comments.
Very cool razor, Steve. I think that your frontier wagon wheel knife is my favorite one. Thanks for always posting such great content.
Very nice work, Brother...
You continue to spark my interest in knife making and offer plenty of food for thought.
Cheers.
Oh, and I did like, "Here SHE is, SON of Kung Fu Treachery". Haha.
Your channel is great. It has inspired me to make my own knives. Your narratives are some of the best on CZcams. Also, you are highly skilled in spite of your humble nature. Life is too short and there are enough real problems out there to throw stones at. There is no room in a discussion or comments section for asinine, immature, and in most cases illiterate buffoons to get their rocks off by posting comments that are not conducive to maintaining the structure and flow of the discussion. Praise, instruction, constructive criticism, differing points of view...these are all good and make for a productive discussion. The rest need to be blocked. I don't like reading that junk! Hunting trolls is time consuming and annoying. It's a shame that it has to be done but thank you for doing it. Love your show, wish you all the success you are prepared to handle, and please keep doing what you do because it's fun and inspiring. I hope you and your family have a great Holiday Season and I look forward to watching your next episode and hope to be watching your 500K Subscriber and 1M Subscriber episodes in the near future! All the Best, Jason
NICE AS ALWAYS
Still my favourite channel on CZcams! And I disagree with your etching comments! The etch on my knife is superb, clear as day! :)
Adam Owen one of the few success stories with the current stencils! How's it going, bro? :)
Green Beetle everything is great! Still in love with the knife! Every person I show it to is amazed at the craftsmanship! Hopefully be saving up to get something else next summer, maybe a neck knife or something a little bit smaller :)
I think the filters are needed you are here to have fun get smarter and learn as well teach us. I think you are making the right decision here. FYI can you do a workshop tour. And what type of forge you have and any tips for a beginner knife smith as myself. Also great vids your awesome and make some bada*s blades. KEEP IT UP AND DONT LET HATERS DESTROY YOUR CHANNEL AS THEY DID MINE. I was just about how many subs you had and haters and rumors were told and now made my channel sh*t and I deleted all my videos and now only have 2 subs. SO STAY POSITIVE AND BLOCK UNNEEDED COMMITS AND DONT LET HATERS AND LIERS DESTROY YOUR CHANNEL.
That was a great shaving razor!
I just started watching and I love your vids and knives.
Saw 2 vids then subbed, great jobs love ur style
Thanks I really enjoyed the video
Awesome as always. I have an autograph from the arms making that blade. Everyone needs to follow the patreon link and throw in a buck or 3. Let's force him to make a video every week or two!
Filmgeek913 Hey, bro!
I'd say that a good comment section is where there is no copypasta, few memes, a helpful and friendly community, and a few moderators to delete the trolls.
A "Good" comment section, in my opinion, has 3 things:
1) Comments that are relevant. While one could argue that a trollish comment is relevant, it only serves to distract and frustrate for the amusement of the person who posted it.
2) Comments that offer criticism/praise. There are always going to be people who like/dislike your craft and they have the right to say so, and while hater's will bash a little more heavily than others, there are still lessons that can be learned from their comments (maybe).
3) Questions and answers. Viewers have questions about things they don't have experience with and if they don't ask- they don't learn. The only addendum to this part ties in with the 1st part. If a question is inappropriate or irrelevant, then it doesn't warrant an answer.
Amazing work as always!
with regards to your question, I think people shouldn’t comment what they wouldn’t be prepared to say face to face with another human. Rough offensive comments are a sign of a troubled, weak minded individual who gets a little kick from trying to upset others! pay no attention to people like that. REAL people talk to each other with respect!
From what I've seen, your comment sections are pretty clean. Can't say that I agree with your comment about 'youtube deleting comments because they were so bad' as I went for months without a single one of my comments sticking for more than a day at best. Friends who made videos tried to find out why, I tried to find out why, and nobody ever did.
Hate to see the Q&A videos going paid only... I enjoyed them.
awesome video as always. appreciate it as always.
tbh I am sorry that that stuff is happening with the comments but your videos are amazing and I hope you keep up the good work. I can't wait for the next vid!
Life is certainly a balancing act. I don't like negativity but I do like constructive criticism. Keep up the great work!
love it! you do good work!
Orc technology shape. Awesome!
First and foremost, I have nothing but praise for you and this channel. Prior to watching your videos, I had no idea that I would ever be interested in blacksmithing.
*TL;DL Warning:*
As for a good comment section, I'm all for weeding out of the obvious trolls and hate mongers, and please do so vigorously. I've come to find this to be a great place for learning and its a welcome break from the usual stupidity found on the rest of the internet, but yes - to the matter at hand.
Like what you mentioned about internet anonymity, it does indeed bring out some of the worst out of people. However, its more difficult than ever to tell the trolls apart from those who may be a bit more...verbose. Hell, people both IRL and online who know me, know that I frequent the dropping of f-bombs as well as having a macabre sense of humor. But then again, in describing myself I've also described the overwhelming majority of the internet. The point is, you may have to use the rule-of-thumb approach when things aren't so clear in regards to what you'd deem inappropriate content. It would be unrealistic to expect sunday school behavior from everybody, but even shop-talk has its limits.
I think the same can be said about topic moderation, but with added leniency. Yes, I too would find it irritating if were to make a thoughtful post, only to see my thread devolve into a cesspool of cat videos, sparkly animated emojis, and "mal-vertisements" for male enhancement. However, topic moderation is a bit of a minefield in my humble opinion as, more often than not, I've seen too many "topic nazis" unintentionally causing their own problems. To be blunt, I haven't the slightest clue on how to be an effective mod in this regard. All I can say is that I acknowledge there are definite times where topic moderation is needed, but that I've also seen great, authentic, conversations being snuffed out all in the name of "staying on topic."
In summary, I'd treat the comment section and this channel like if it were your own, real-life workshop that you've opened to the public. You're doing this with your own time and resources, therefore I think its your every right to "boot out" any trolls/trouble makers, but perhaps some leniency would be nice for those who may have better intentions than they have manners. This channel is your very own shop, but one that has a web address as opposed to a street address.
hello! avid wet shaver here, you need to hone your razors to a minimum of 8k grit. look up the Norton 4k/8k combination stone. it is the industry standard for honing razors. beyond that you will get a noticeably better shave. try picking up some Lapping Film from a fiber Optics supply house, those films go up to 30k and are cheap as chips, just lay them (wet) over a piece of glass, or mirror. i cut a piece of glass to the same size as the Norton stone and cut the film to fit. enjoy! thanks for posting vids!
Nice job on that razor mate. you earn my sub. keep up the great work :)
That looks sharp in 2 ways. ;)
i love your comment section part of the video.
For fisher! Very Nice
I love the razor. Beautiful work.
Shogun-Jimi thanks man. I'm looking forward to your album cover project.
even better news now, Rockler is giving us a set of speakers for the give-away.
Been watching for a while. Big fan
This like all DIY channels are for learning and teaching. I feel that the hate must be filtered out. Some like me, rarely post comments, and never videos. Once in a while I post advice. But only if I can help. I just enjoy watching the creative process. Even if I never make a project. Please keep on posting and ignore the naysayers.
nice work . as for comments keep up the good work
I shave the back of my neck with a straight razor don't have to trim first / can define hairline), I'd totally buy one of those from you. Looks AWESOME
I look forward to all of your work, so I'm really glad you're not closing up the YouTubing (which is what I was afraid you were going to do).
Awesome videos man, absolutely love them! I'd love to start making knives, I doubt it's in the cards anytime soon but do you have an approximate start up cost associated with beginning knife making and what is needed?
That's cool, Looks like a GOTHIC SLASHER.
Just use your best judgement on the comment section. It's your channel. Let it reflect your values. Freedom of speech is great and all, but I respect someone who tries to keep their platform positive.
Neat project! Your wagon wheel knife was one of my favorites as well!
PS- Let the youtube comments be; no censorship! People looking for intelligent conversations will find there way to them. No one should view your comments section as a reflection of your channel, you don't get to pick what someone will type!
Great video. One suggestion though, I know you mentioned it bus you should really put the channel emblem stamped on the knife. Just thought it would be cool.but seriously 10/10
your knifes are awesome
People in general are petty and stupid! I’ve always appreciated
an artist like yourself who shares his knowledge with other likeminded
individuals. The internet has become a dumping ground where no one is reasonable
for their actions. Thanks for all your hard work!
Nice lookin knife. Just found your channel the other day, been watching a few of your videos. Will probably sub.
Not gonna go into the comment section bit lol, that's a hard one to get on about. Too many people with too many opinions.
Love your videos!! I always make sure to say what I would say in person. I know there are horrible posts out there. Sorry brother.
I have problems with files... they crack during forging, or they end up being case hardened. I have a coal hand crank forge and I just can't seem to have any luck with them. Hammer on!!
I think it is good that you put a filter on your comment section because some people don't have a filer at all like you said
we got a old saying....your soap and wash rag....wash it anyway you want!! lmao i enjoy your channel.
I you are doing a amazing job as it is.
I think a good comment section is based on the content. Filters are good. I have an interest in your craft however I do not practice it so I don't comment often because I'm not sure what to say.
beautiful work! you are the reason I'm starting my first knife project. I have always admired knives. im actually 3 days into my first project. almost done profiling! I was wandering what kind of belt grinder are you using in your videos? did you make it yourself?
Harvey Watts I use an Esteem grinder. Don't shy away from an inexpensive 1x30" grinder to start if needed. An angle grinder and files can remove lots of metal too. Congrats on your new life long addiction.
that is so cool
Hello there!
I love your videos in general and I have a bit of a silly question.
Where should I start on Knife Making and Blacksmithing/Forging in general? What is the best way to start?
its your channel man, your the one who got off his ass and not only blacksmiths some beautiful things but edits the videos really well fuck em if they cant be constructive or civil they need to fuck off down the road. Ive seen 3 of your videos so far and i just subscribed, keep doing great work
i love your videos :D, stay awesome
Your channel, your rules! Comments should be on topic and never a personal attack. If someone doesn't like the project they can say so, but keep it on topic and reasonable clean. My .02 cents worth.
The razor looks heavy. Is it and is that a issue? I've never used a straight razor, so I don't know. Very cool looking though!
0.02 cents?
Your opinions are worth more than that come on :D
Subbed solely due to your comments curation philosophy. The knife is nice too.
This knife is BADASSS!!!!!!
What makes a great comment section? Comments. As long as you leave them enabled, generally you'll see comments related to the content you produce. As long as it's a crafting channel most of what you'll see will be on topic. If you as a content provider go off topic then you'll see more off topic content in the future. It only takes one political video to get the professionally offended and hobby trolls going on a channel for weeks.
As far as I've seen, your comment section is happy, healthy and fairly vibrant in discourse. People will crop up to defend the space regardless of your oversight, just watch out for those that are trying to dominate discussion in the guise of defending the community, those can spoil the environment quickly.
Great channel, great content, keep up the good work :)
i liked the watermark you put on the grind wheel
I would LOVE to try doing this on my own. A file's steel seems about the highest carbon / longest edge-keeping and hardest steel out there. I have a couple of questions; I think I saw you anneal or normalize the blank after shaping. Why after? I understand the clay painting / heat treat+quench dip as it comes from samurai sword manufacture process. The acid to etch WHAT contrast? No temper? What is your recommendation on large grinder? If I want to make blades, should I consider a vertical forge?
Hello Green Beetle. I've been watching your channel and alot of other knife makers. I've always wanted to have a forge (well, workshop in general.) Do you have any tips for starting up and beginners?
Nice
i really love your vids! ^^
but i have one question... how much costs all your equipment? (:
OMG I love forged in fire!!!!
i usually use leaf spring or coil springs for my projects. how can i tell what kind of steel they are?
