  • Brian is here and ready to talk about Girls Und Panzer in this analysis/video essay and in light of Das Finale Part 3 coming out on Blu-Ray! We'll be here to discuss the perspectives and themes surrounding the anime, noting on Senshadou and its relations to ideas like family, ambition, competition, and toxicity. Especially on those ideas, we'll be looking into the context of them and ultimately try to reach GuP and the most important lesson it is trying to relay.

    A lot of people make fun of me for liking Girls und Panzer lmao. Its good to know that there is some meaning to be found beneath the surface. Its great to see some analysis on a show people tend to gloss over as "tanks are cool but the rest is garbage". While I still don't think the show is extremely complex, its still a far cry from being completely superficial, and while the messages delivered won't make you think about the meaning of life, they work, and its delivered in an engaging and entertaining way. One thing that really grinds my gears though...

      In Das Finale 2 Anzio cannot win with Bonple in fair fight(in Saga of Pravda Bonple lost with pravda only becouse they have heavy tanks. and Anzio have only one heavy tank.Jajka will take down half of Anzio on her own) so or they get plot armor or Anzio eliminated Bonple powerhouse in some way(send Jajka pizza with ton of laxigen?) and in Ribbon Warrior . who is crushed by Jajka as first ? Anzio. Revenge?

    I am a 66 year old man who is interested in WWII on the German side. Was looking for versions of Panzerlied on the web and found a version by the Tokyo Philharmonic. They had done the soundtrack for an anime called Girls und Panzer. I didn't even know what anime was at the time. Found the anime online and fell in love at first sight! Bought the series on DVD, along with the Anzio battle, the OVAs and Der Film! As you can seee from my avatar I have discovered other anime too. For me the most important lesson in GuP is an example of focus and commitment. The understanding of how capable characters are just fascinates me.
    Even apart from them being able to fight using WW2 tanks, they depicted as a loyal followers of some THEME. It is first of all represented by all the schools acting as a different nations, but this absurd level of dedication is shown in the characters too.
    Yukari being hardcore fan of tanks, Saori being the communications specialist capable of fluently decrypt flag semaphore, Mako being legally licensed tank driver allowed to drive a tank in the city among regular cars, history buffs club being hardcore history fans to the point of permanent cosplaying, automotive club maintaining all the different tanks and also owning and driving cars, Anteater team being hardcore gamers, Shark team being hardcore sailors, the school consile operating the entire school (or even the entire school carrier, for the lack of any other authority), disciplinary committee apparently supervising the discipline on the entire school carrier all the way to the lowest decks, girls of other schools being able and legally allowed to operate heavy airplanes, zeppelins, military ships and trains.
    And then there is me, sitting and waching random videos literally all day long despite having access to the whole world on my fingertips and opportunity to do anything i want.
    Characters in GuP are the ideals that can be followed at the current level of development of our civilization, example being author of this video spending giant amount of time on creating the message about something he adores and well versed about, and i think that over-the-top scale of dedication in characters is showing how little dedication we have today for the things we are interested in.

    I think GuP and My Little Pony actually have something really key in common with one another: they are both, at core, earnest, passionate and unironic advocates for the value of friendship. In a world so rife with division and people being mean to one another, I think there's something charming and wholesome to this aspect of the show that just makes you feel good about things.
    One of my favourite moments was during the movie, where all the schools turn out to support Ooarai in their hour of need. The girls were opponents, but they were never enemies. Shout out to Chi Ha Tan who came with everything they had and brought enough tanks to even out the numbers on their own. They just met the Ooarai team but they'll be damned if they were going to let their friends down.

    The simplest reason that GuP's writing is de-emphasized is that at it's core it is a "Sports Story". This is not a terribly highly regarded story type because the plot and outcome are in the hands of the author(s) (and such hands are very hard to hide). This tends to weaken suspense since the creators can make the impossible happen, who wins is not a good thing to lean on.
    What makes GuP work is that it is only marginally about "winning" (and here it's how? not if) it's about broadening yourself, adding extra skills and finding talents you never knew you had. Miho is learning to appreciate life outside her talent. Hana doesn't give up Flowers, she just adds gunnery (and takes over Student-Council). Saori is still a silly girl at heart, but she's a silly girl with a Ham Radio license and a knowledge of Semaphore. The gamers "live the dream" and are inspired to get themselves really fit. There's just enough of this (spread over a HUGE cast) to keep things interesting between fights.
    GuP "works" because it isn't about who wins and loses but what playing the game does for the protagonists and their opponents. In that way it's like "Rudy" which points out at the end, not only did our hero get a degree from a school well out of his league. ALL his younger siblings went to college, something that was not in the cards when he started dreaming big.

    Joining the sub reddit made me realize the a lot of subtle nuance of some characters. Some topics such as "is Saori seft absorb?", Miho's complicated relationship with her little sister and the burden of responsibility. Azusa and the manga "rabbit sunrise" and specially miho's complicated love for the sport and her subtle streangt in kindness.
    If you want a good analysis on the story beats and specially the animation and sound design please see teaboo's watch along of the show.

    • @IkigaiStudio
      @IkigaiStudio  Před 2 lety +4

      Yepp, doing a script like this required quite the research and pick-and-choose in terms of info gathering! Most of which didn't even make it into the video since I focused on the show's writing! I decided not to use the "Rabbit Sunrise" manga since it's technically a fan creation, but it is honestly surprising to see doujin go in depth into the side characters and try to elaborate on GuP's core themes. And oh gosh, the amounts of times I was tempted to use "Koume's Road" in this script... Thank god, Ribbon Warrior and Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu were official works!
      Also, it's absolutely nice seeing people look into GuP's film aspects like Teeaboo does, though I don't watch his stuff too often! I know a number of people talk about its animation and sound design, but not as much on GuP's writing, which is my specialty and why I thought to contribute my analysis and go further to outer implications of themes and meanings (ie. communities and toxicity, nuances in social relationships, the way we teach literature, how we can interpret anime and attitudes towards anime, etc.)

    I think Senshado is a neat metaphor for life and learning to live with others. We are all in control of a small part of a tank, we each have a small window that gives us a very small picture of the world we share. As individuals we are completely helpless and useless but through cooperation, trust and understanding with the small amount of knowledge and expertise we each provide we can create a clearer picture of the world and achieve the impossible.

  • @IJN_Guy
    @IJN_Guy Před 2 lety +9

    As an arm-chair historian, I originally used to think this show (I watched the dub, and, looking back at it, I don't think it was that bad, just not compatible with this show, as you said) was a complete waste of time and completely unrealistic. I hated how they "animated-ized" the tanks, and thought they disgraced the actual tanks. And, as a guy who hates reading, the dub did not feel right, as the information presented felt like tokenism to history in the story. As a failure of an *OBJECTIVE HISTORIAN,* I saw things like this as unrealistic, but praised things like "Fury."
    It took some time and a friend's reminder to make me realize, it is just a show, and that is it. I had found myself growing to hate other movies, from "Midway (2019)" to more realistic and better ones like "Greyhound." But, once I showed my Japanese cartoon fan of a friend and told him how much of a joke this show was, he simply told me a something I would never forget: "It's a show. If you came to an anime expecting full-blown realism, that's your fault. If you want regular realism in shows, watch a documentary." Although this angered me at first, I kept looking back at this statement and realized that I didn't like a single movie because of my search for "realism."
    Everyone has different attractions to history and producers have different means of teaching history. Not everyone wants to watch a documentary, and, from what I have seen, modern documentaries are no different from movies or shows, usually telling misleading truths. It is completely unfair that this show should be considered a "joke," but they think things like COD: Vanguard (which was branded as being "historically realistic") as a better, more preferable alternative.
    One movie I have noticed that is in sort of the same boat is the aforementioned "Midway." There are many factual events in the movie and I though it was a pretty good movie in general, as it tries to show as much as possible from a 6-month period in less than 4 hours. Yet, it takes an unnecessary amount of criticism from big companies because the "characters are complete stereotypes" or begin nit-picking every minor detail. However, not everyone is interested in watching a documentary, so I was happy that many people began learning the history of the Battle of Midway. And, I am happy when newer audiences criticize the movie, because that means they learned something new.
    Girls und Panzer, in my opinion, does the same thing for Japanese cartoon fans, and I find it very delighting when they learn or research history from it. Sure, it has some flaws, but that is what makes it entertaining, it is fun! Therefore, if we want to criticize things for being unrealistic, remember, if you think think a modern dramatic "documentary" is better, you are no historian, you are a prick.

    I think where GuP excels is in it's show don't tell style. I still don't think this show is particularly deep, but I also don't really knows what that means anymore (it seems like something I cared about more when I was younger and still exploring my identity). But every background character has a bit of characterization to them visually and the action is clearly well directed (you could probably model every match with a board and models and move everything around in-line with the movie with no magic teleportation for convenience). But where GuP kind of fails is with the stated plot. Yukari goes through great character development. They don't have to say "wow, Yukari you're so awkward," she acts awkward. Even after finding her group of friends, she doesn't feel like she belongs for a while. By the end she's found her footing, her friend group, her meaning. And there's a lot of subtle things like this (like the Miho-Maho relationship you mentioned). But the Hana arc kind of sucks. They have to just tell us there's drama and then resolve it by just telling the audience that they got over it. GuP is a show that greatly benefits with rewatches where you can pick up on these things. But I understand most people don't rewatch shows (very much). If you aren't paying attention to the background, if you can't keep track of the 80 characters on your first watch , if you don't know about the references, etc. then all you're really left with is fun action and a pretty bare-bones and contrived plot.
    And thanks for letting me know about the Pikamee watch along. Gonna rewatch again now

    I've been a fan for 8 years, and GuP has undoubtedly changed me. GuP was one of the animes, if not the anime that has pulled me into anime, the first one is probably bakemonogatari. I'll start my story from when i was but a kid, i was in elementary. 2014, i was watching a Lost Pause anime in crack video, when i found GuP. I was VERY interested in military stuff back then (until now) because of History channel. I was hooked on anime by then, but i was still but a wee lad, i was 6 (about to turn 7) years old at the time. I really liked anime back then, as regular cartoons "bored" me (not that i was actually bored by them, but compared to anime, it stands no chance) Studio Ghibli and others were my first exposure to anime, including some others like tora dora, however, I felt like there was a gap between my hobbies. Anime, and History, don't really fit in with one another. Until i found GuP. GuP basically hooked me to be the overly enthusiastic history person i am now, not only did the anime have good drama, but it spoke to me. The stug team and yukari specifically, but not only that, the conflict within the anime just kept you watching until the end. Once at the end, you feel complete, satisfied with the ending. Oorai persevered and won, however, is this the end of the story? Luckily many other animes entertained me, i also began reading mangas and Light novels, as i've been an avid reader back then (not as much now, lol). Oh well, that's mostly where it began. And now i'm here, 8 years later, still a GuP fan.

One example is that he had an bad case of insomnia, that needed medical attention but his parents refused to do, even trough they had the money, no reason why. When i told him to watch GuP, he watched all in like 2-3 days, and i waked up in the morning with like 50 messages that he sent at 3am, alongside multiple screenshots, talking about he cried at certain moments.
    I think this video might be the first and only video to explain why that happened. While i couldnt articulate, i always had an good felling about gup and so did my friend. Excellent job on explaining it on depth.

    The closest story I can think of is from DOTA 2 tournament. A story about 2018 and 2019 TI champion winner called "OG" and its team leader NOtail.

      Absolutely! It's been amazing to hear people changing or having new understandings towards subjects like this. For Girls Und Panzer especially, since it can be very silly at times, it can be difficult to formulate these deeper implications and ideas. I mean, it took me four years to figure that out!
      In any case, it's heartwarming to know that our imperfect analysis was inspiring! We're by no means experts and were unable to relay everything we wanted to, but thank you regardless!
      Side note: Nice take on the title! Honestly, never really thought about that and just goes to show that we can all learn and provide cool ideas from each other!

    Come for the tanks, leave with much deeper meaning. as a history nerd, the tank was what attracted me to this show (and later on, anime in general) but, gladly, it isn't the only thing I get from the shows
    Wow, what a great video, it's really great to hear this kind of analysis, people really do miss various points of girls and panzer, they mostly seem to only care about the "panzer" part, which can be a great topic to discuss (which usually leads to a rather disappointing conclusion), but not the "girls" and other parts so they miss all the minor and subtle details, the quote, "We make a game out of war" sums it up perfectly, I mean if they decide to have a gigantic carrier as a school, maybe it isn't mean to be taken realistically?.
    damn, the show is gonna be a decade old this year but it is still special to me, I really wish they made the side contents into animated shows especially Katyusha (with less wackiness) and Erika's stories.

      I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the video and got something out of it! It is the greatest honor as a future creator to hear this sort of thing!
      It's funny that you mention these ideas actually! My brother and I had a conversation about this video and eventually lead us to some videos that relate to your points of the "panzer" vs "girl" discussion. I won't point fingers because... well, our video explains why it's not worth it to be mad against conflicting ideas or simplistic viewpoints. But lemme tell you I went off on how most of their points were just... repetitive and said very little about the show that wasn't evident already.
      Oh, but moving from that slightly frustrating note, I'm super happy you caught on the "We make a game out of war" quote from Ribbon Warrior! Holy crap, it's such a (*chef's kiss*) great line to apply to this show and implies so much, a lot of which was unfortunately cut from this video! And daaamn, a decade old, that completely missed me, despite being such a huge fan! But nonetheless, this show is also incredibly special to me, and clearly many others in the comments! Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

    Such a great video. While I didn't have the same kind of emotional bond with the show as you did, I appreciated the show because it dared to be fun, and all the friendships felt pretty genuine. I will always love Miho's growth from the reluctant participant to the "Chosen one" of Senshado. As a WWII and tank nerd I love how the writers and staff ran the balance between adding in historical details such as implied knowledge of armor thickness, gun capabilities, travel capabilities, but also knowing when and where to eliminate historical accuracy for the sake of fun. If we were totally realistic, half of Kuromorimine's team would've broken down horrifically as their drive trains broke themselves apart in the cross country battle they participated in!
    But that's where GuP's genius comes in. It's clear that the staff love their subject matter and are willing to have bonkers, insane fun with it. It's a great show and I feel sad that many can't dig past the flaws and see why it's such a fun and lovely show to watch.

    It brings me joy that someone has finally done a deep dive in Girls und Panzer on CZcams as I've been following Girls und Panzer since day one (October 9th, 2012). There's been a severe lack of CZcams videos on the subject of Miho's family, the often downplayed plot or story setting, Hana's story arc with her mother and how that compares with Miho's own family, friendship and comradery, rivals, growth as a person, and so much more.
    I encourage all fans to delve deeper into Girls und Panzer beyond just the girls and tanks because there's a deep layer to explore for each aspect of the show. It's easy to just use the simple explanation for the characters, the plot, and the setting, but I feel that you'd be missing the underlying themes of the show.
    I hope you, and many other fans, do more in-depth videos on the series. There's just so much to talk about, that the discussion can go on for days. Good work!

    You made good points that there is more to GuP in that sense. Even as a big fan I did not pay those aspects that much attention.
    However I always wondered if there is more to the world building. I mean the whole thing in general. Japan putting so much effort into the moral education, the roles of men in that world. How does Japan compare to the rest of the world since in the GuP universe they have the capabilties to build a fleet of ships over 7 km long.
    I have not explored the other GuP media yet but if there is more behind the show in general then it is not that far fetched that they also intentionally chose to create this strange world with more in mind than that meets the eye.

    Normally i probably found the Nishizumi family part hard to believe. Since last year however, my family are on the verge of breaking apart. I suddenly have to face and understand the complex reality of family issues on the go. Planning actions and words to keep us together is hard but relationship problems it brings along the way creates a whole other dimension of dilemma, especially for siblings who don't necessarily hate each other but had to make a stand on opposite sides.
    Indeed, I now fully understand what Miho had to face when it comes to interacting with her family even though the show didnt really talk about it too much nor do the series revolve around it.

  • @robitpower
    @robitpower Před 2 lety +2

    I love this video. I love how you hit the marks, and how you did more than just look at only the 12 episodes of the anime. I thoroughly enjoy media and works that go deeper and tell more without explicitly telling you, and Girls und Panzer is perfect for that. Another big example I enjoyed in another media was Starship Troopers-every main character has something about them that further defines their roles and natures. Rico is shown to be very tactful in the moment, but struggles in the raw analytics, or trying to view things in the long run. Carmen is expressed as heavily hedonistic, acting on the whims and desires of the moment, while also being very intelligent in mathematics, which makes her perfect for a pilot. Carl, while directly stated as being psychic, also has an overall studious personality, very dedicated to his work, and also caring for his friends yet willing to go the distance to victory.
    All those things-the indirect storytelling, the expression of themes with more than just dialogue, and everything in between-are found in Girls und Panzer. I love how Miho's sheer presence and desire to make Senshado a fun activity-a game to play with and to make new friends over-prompts a massive change across the entire field. While it's easy to assume that simply losing to Miho, or working with her brings forth change, there's more to it than that;
    In competing with Darjeeling, as you pointed out, it made both girls recognize what Senshado *could* be, and becomes the catalyst for what Ooarai becomes: a team of unique people, all with their ambitions and desires within Senshado, working together to enjoy this sport with Miho. This practice match sets up everything with our original 5 teams; in how Miho and her team discover the true fun to Senshado; how the history buffs learn to tone down their excitement in exchange for genuine work, further becoming one of the most reliable teams in the future; how the freshmen devote themselves to improve, and genuinely do so, setting up the audience expectation that Azusa will succeed Miho by acting by her example, and changing across the entire series and its numerous installments trying to figure out their own meaning; the volleyball team and their ingenuity, often willing to take point and charge, and can be counted on to reliably adapt and develop new tactics to make the most out of their lacking firepower and armor; and even the school council team, who become one of the more gap-filling teams at first, but being counted on for surprises and unexpected outcomes on their end, especially in ambushes and use of speed.
    Their first match against Saunders further reinforces the teams and how they perform, while also bringing out a new side to Saunders: ever since this match, we haven't seen Saunders actively cheat or abuse loopholes, implying a change in heart of Arisa, and the further failure by Naomi to adequately keep their flag tank alive brought her down to Earth after witnessing the breakdown by Arisa. Kei overall seemed more or less the same, but perhaps can be found to be more controlling of her team, and enforcing better morals to properly establish Senshado as a game, not war. Cheating isn't a necessity in a game-it is in war.
    Against Anzio, Anchovy goes on and on over the idiocy of her subordinates, and constantly holds herself on the highest pedestal, actively perpetuating everyone to chant for her, despite all their attention shifting immediately for food. Upon her match with Ooarai, Anchovy's subsequent banquet for Ooarai signifies a change in the commander. Anchovy perhaps recognizes the amount of effort her team put in, and henceforth has yet to ridicule her team, and in return they continue to support their commander.
    Against Pravda, a new team arrives in the form of the hall monitors, and it becomes very clear and evident that, under Sodoko, extreme sense of order and discipline is stressed. Over time, we see the hall monitors gradually change, with Sodoko herself eventually declaring that rules were meant to be broken after reaching her lowest point, faced with the possibility of being without her sense of purpose for real. For the entire Ooarai team, it's also a harsh exposure to reality, that pride and overselling oneself can be detrimental not only to Senshado, but it's very expression as an extension of life. Where Katyusha recognizes afterwards where her pride and ambition to avoid looking weak made her lose, Ooarai took that change in the middle of the match and made use of the opportunity given to them to regroup and recover. During this match, we also start to see more and more of where each team develops themselves; the history buffs make use of their unique profile to establish an ambush that aids them in victory; the school council recognize their calling in causing chaos, springing up when most unexpected and attacking where their opponents are weak, learning patience and control to contrast Momo's constant activity and dialogue; the freshmen take a look at the bigger picture, and willingly sacrifice themselves in order to keep their flag tank alive-a far cry from when they first started; and the volleyball team only strengthen their determination and desire to continue, using their dead club as an inspiration for why to continue, why to keep fighting and finding the will to continue.
    Kouromorimine's match introduces us to the gamers and auto club teams, both of which are using Senshado to fully engage and enjoy their time, the former actually meeting irl for the first time ever for Senshado, the latter enjoying the challenge of handling the difficult Porsche Tiger, and using it to further test their skills. By this point, Ooarai isn't just a team of small tanks with pop guns-they have some genuine, historically-powerful guns like the 75mm AT guns on the StuG and Panzer 4, the 88mm on the Porsche, the 75mm on the Type 3, and the M3 also bears a unique pair of armaments, one of which being the same gun mounted on Shermans. They also, by this point, got themselves a Hetzer, adding another big German gun to their side with a hefty frontal armor to boot. Ooarai isn't lacking in speed, either, with the Type 89 often being one of their first choices for scouting, and-oddly enough-the Porsche later on when they can spare the armor. Ooarai has become unique, variable, reflective of each other, both held down by their limitations yet also thriving in this individuality under Miho's ambition of a fun Senshado for everyone.
    The match itself proved plenty and reinforced just as much, like the council enjoying their ambushes and chaos-inducing tactics, or the freshmen finding new and innovative ways to tackle opponents much larger than themselves-reminiscent of the spirit of Ooarai itself and Miho, and the various teams finding their ways to stand out and make use of what makes them special (besides the gamers, but that's because they died first). It's already established the relationship between Maho and Miho, how they both love and admire one another, but had yet to properly speak about this towards one another. As for the other team members, it really puts a focus on Erika for a moment, and her obsessiveness for Maho, and puts the first seeds of Erika's own change against tradition.
    (I have more, there's only so much for 1 comment)

    • @robitpower
      @robitpower Před 2 lety +2

      The movie introduces us to best girl Mika, who's somehow the most carefree yet philosophical character with a hint of possible mysticism to her, and Chihatan, specifically Nishi and Fukuda. Nishi is wanting of change, but is also undesiring to drastically alter and quell the enthusiasm of her team. Through Fukuda, who learns her own brand of originality and initiative by the volleyball team, Nishi and Chihatan can properly implement the necessities for lasting change in their program, and when comparing the context of the Imperial Japanese team being given a complete 180 from typical expectations of Japanese (or any nation when portraying their own team) media by having the old, traditional values being considered counterproductive, slow, and detrimental, while also fully capable of being changed by new and young talent tells the beliefs of the writers and directors.
      The movie also further characterizes everyone through visuals alone. Throughout GuP, we get various scenes of each team doing their own activities, all building their characters and developments, like how after the gamers recognize their own shortcomings in their last 2 matches, they motivate themselves to become better fundamentally, but also make sure to keep to what made them so unique; their games. The hall monitors recognize that they can't strictly be suited for rules and order, and instead took a lesson out of Miho and worked to change. The volleyball team continued to play the sport they loved regardless of situation. The freshmen bonded and learned the lessons of patience and furthered their own goals of being unique, yet part of the whole of Ooarai. The downtime becomes a perfect chance for the auto club to hone their skills and add the important addition to the Porsche's motors. The school council powered through while Anzu worked her ass off for her school, showing that extra mile after being given an inch, owing at least that much to everyone-and Miho-after everything they've done together.
      Everyone coming together to help Ooarai helps shadow the greater impact Miho has made on the sport, once more challenging the strict regime of a Senshado that becomes more reminiscent of history than it becomes a sport. This is also an important moment to mention Boco, and what it means to Miho and Alice as children suffering under the harshness of a system demanding compliance to tradition. Boco becomes the embodiment of what the two continue to believe and go through; the constant struggle against an oppressive force in a desire to become free, untouched from the bully, and independent and strong. They've both explicitly stated how they love him because he keeps going after everything, which rings true to the two, since if they wanted to be free, they have to constantly push forward, through thick and thin.
      I also feel like the massive, hour-long match does more for the other schools and cast than it does Ooarai, since it gives us a longer look at each one. Katyusha witnesses the extent to which her subordinates would go, and it creates a revelation within Katyusha about what it means to lead. Whereas before, Katyusha was humbled by Miho's humility and saw her as an equal, this made Katyusha see her subordinates as equals. Katyusha finally showed a weakness, now without the usual people to support her complex and having witnessed them all sacrifice themselves to keep her competing. Katyusha fled, and in showing that weakness at the insistence of her closest allies, she was faced with an internal dilemma: does she keep fighting this fight alone, to vanquish and counterbalance that weakness, or does she recognize where her strengths have boundaries, and come to appreciate those around her more with a different team? She worked with the latter, collaborating with the auto club and gamers primarily, bouncing off their own senses of comradery and finding a purpose as a unique person in the whole machine.
      Erika learns more of her own brand and uniqueness as well when collaborating with the former group. She learns the value of speed and unconventional methods towards a goal, working closely with the very tank she called a failure in the tournament and witnessing the extent to which it could succeed.
      Anchovy further learned some humility, going from her initial appearance as someone focused on the big, new achievement, to appreciating tankettes and proclaiming them the best, reflecting her future tactics trying to prioritize speed and mobility of the tankettes and putting them in more physical roles than before.
      Chihatan gets their first taste of the guerrilla tactics that they excel at with their lackluster power and armor, using their terrain to their advantage, while Fukuda develops her initiative and penchant to change, with Nishi eager to accept that change.
      Saint Gloriana and Saunders overall don't feel like they change much. I felt as though, in the end, not much changed with them.
      Mika's presence helps give that amazing quote, and exemplifies what it means to fully *believe* in Senshado and life as a chaotic force that acts on whims and wills undefined, and the best way to handle this is to work with it rather than against it.

      @robitpower Před 2 lety +2

      As for Das Finale, there's so much more. Shark team uses Senshado to repay a debt to Momo and undergo a similar chain as the history buffs with their eagerness to their flag and motif. I love how we get more and more of other schools, like how Marie manages to make the two halves of BC Freedom recognize the positives of each other rather than the negatives, how they both desire the same thing, have the same drive, just are too caught up on the minor details of one another and over origin to bother working together.
      Can I also just go on about the absolute evolution of the action and presentation and sound design? I love animation, and how you can put in so much visually to express so much emotionally as well. I honestly think that the Ooarai and Chihatan match will perhaps be the best one, filled with plenty of moments that feel immensely cinematic, creative, and still with that unique, visual-based characterization of everyone that made me love GuP. Despite the immense cast, everyone feels different because of how the animators and directors took to each one, made sure not to rinse and repeat designs and voices, and overall took the time and effort to distinguish everyone.
      And onto the topic of nostalgia and implied connections, I love the situation that they gave for having the freshmen be the ones to get the sharks out of their water predicament, paying homage to their own predicament in the tournament, or how the tanks crossed the bridge against Chihatan after the events with BC Freedom, making sure there was plenty of space between them to ensure they couldn't all be bunched up on the bridge again, and the subsequent retiring of thr Hetzer to bide its time, aware of its own strengths in an ambush, and wanting to get some distance away from the action to protect itself as a fixed chassis. Honestly, there's just so much to love and break down, and I'm just glad that there's plenty of others out there who love this anime, and enjoy the fact that it blew up like it did into what it is now.

    Ten years ago this came out and it had such a ridiculous premise that for all intents and purposes it should not have worked. But yet it did, sometimes you need a ridiculous story to make a great anime. I think the reason GUP worked so well is the unique blend of genres, you have the Military aspects, the Sports aspects, and finally the Cute Girls doing Cute Things aspects. This is why GUP works as a whole, the mix of those aspects that makes the series as a whole work.

My favorite scene is when all the schools come to help Oarai in Der Film. Really shows how Miho made a positive impact on all these characters from all these different schools and getting them to rally to help Oarai. Lots of themes of comradely and teamwork along with the emotion of the journey up to that point packed into that scene that I will remember forever. I love Chihatan as a team because I feel they portray a lot of things I feel and think, even if I don't show them openly like they do. They have a tradition, high passion and devotion to win and be good. All of this backed up with how humble they are at the end, even with their loss to Oarai they all still willingly wrote letters of appreciation to Oarai and look to them for how to be better. I love tradition too and don't like to let go of those things and I understand evolving tradition to not abandon it and the spirt is hard, but they managed to do it and I love that.

      But yeah, I'm incredibly flattered at what you think towards my analysis! While I am proud of the skill, there are definitely people who can do it better, and I still have a lot to learn. I will say I took a lot of inspiration from people like Under the Scope, Hiding in Public, Explanation Point, Extra Credits, Monty Oum, and the things I learned in college (film/media theory, anime classes, etc.). However, the style of this particular video was inspired by a fellow named hbomberguy, an absolutely amazing documentary and critical content creator with super engaging videos about media and real-life events!
      Media analysis is a super in-depth skill, but it's not an impossible task to learn if you want to find out. It's just a lot of observation, research, and occasionally some technical know-how. Two of the best practical things to learn is 1) cinematic aspects (shot composition, writing/narratology, film definitions, theme vs meaning, etc.) and 2) having a point (objective criticism vs subjective opinion, outer world implications, social ideas/concepts, etc). Hiding in Public did an amazing video outlining the difference between subject and object!
      But of all, as Monty Oum once said, "Watch things, just keep your eyes open!" If you feel something towards a piece of media, moment, or experience, explore it! Take time to process those feelings and ask questions, not to be right about something but to further understand a topic. And take it at your own pace! There's always something to learn and discover, especially about anime and media. Even if you end up somewhere crazy, well, you can explore that too or backtrack the way you came. I'm happy that you enjoyed our efforts! And big respect for being a longer fan than I! As someone who also loves this show, I always felt there was something missing to Girls Und Panzer when it came to places like Reddit and CZcams. And inspired by others before me like Under the Scope, Potential History, Replay Value, and Hiding in Public (to name a few), I felt these perspectives and understandings were worth relaying, and at the very least resolve my feelings towards a medium I love. While it might be disappointing, we don't plan to upload any Girls Und Panzer essays soon, mostly to re-center our attention on our identity as am aspiring anime studio. But as I will mention in the podcast, I absolutely want to talk more about the anime in the future; so if you're willing, please wait around and I'll be sure to work on another essay!
      As a side note, if you feel that you want to or even need to, I tacitly encourage anyone who wants to be a content creator! It's difficult and a grind. Plus, a lot of it is built off sheer determination, quality of content, and even timing. If you're willing to take a crack at it though, some words of advice! Take baby steps. Pace yourself. Find what you want to do as a channel and in life. Plan for the future. And of all, find a pillar to support you because it is going to be hard. I've had a few mental breakdowns before and was only able to get through it by sheer force of will AND the support of friends and family. These are kinda obvious and even vague, but truth be told, this mentality carried us this far. There's a lot more advice and lessons to relay, but perhaps those are best developed through experience and time. But remember, your health goes first! And at the end, even amidst failure, it's gonna be okay.
      Finally, the Discord thing! Especially since you've been so polite and just asking, I take absolutely no offense at all! But as you might guess, I'm a little iffy about my personal life and online presence. And while I'm super chill with close friends and family, I guarantee you that I'll be one of the most awkward and quiet fellows you'll ever meet! I'm also a huge introvert, believe it or not, and prefer solitude... a lot like Mika I suppose! In all seriousness, I am considering a dedicated Discord server or even a Discord Q&A stream, so watch out for that! Probably won't have one up yet, but it is a foreseeable future! And of course, if you have any questions or any comments you are comfortable sharing, I'll do my best to respond... if I can! Once again, thank you for the kind comments and, as I like to say, may the winds be ever on your sails! Or in this case, Panzer Vor!

      @@IkigaiStudio Thank you very much for replying!
      I have watched the podcast yesterday, and am perfectly ok with you working on things that aren't Girls und Panzer related. After all, your channel isn't themed after it, and it's understandable that it won't be your main focus. I will still follow the channel, and am interested in seeing what you guys have coming up, whether it's vlogs, gameplay, podcasts or essays, as well as Girls und Panzer stuff, even if the latter is in a limited capacity.
      Thank you for the advice! I have been pondering the idea of a CZcams channel of my own for a long while now, but never decided to finally commit. I have had experience with CZcams back in 2015, while I was still in my teenage years, and it was some of the most fun I've had. However, I have no real experience in editing, and it just so happens that the content I'd want to make requires a lot of it (airsoft gameplays, gaming videos, any kind of commentary etc.). The quality of my content is the most concerning factor for me, as I do not want to deliver anything that I wouldn't enjoy watching or anything that is subpar. Still, I thank you for the inspiration you gave me, and maybe I will finally get to it sometime soon!
      About Discord, I understand your point, and am glad you don't take any offence to my suggestion. I am a rather big introvert myself and can be incredibly shy and awkward at times. For my liking of tanks and military history, and me sometimes being a bit of an oddball; and for my ability to be level-headed, well composed and the tendency to fight hard for my beliefs and principles, as well as my nurturing and caring side, my firends have compared me a lot to Yukari and a lot to Hana respectively. Anyway, if you do set up a discord server, I will gladly join it and contribute to it. Am looking forward to seeing you in future videos!
      Have a good day!

    really liked the video, i must say i agree with most that is being said.
    But for me, Girls Und Panzer always has had these meanings behind, because i always understood it as a spokon, or sports anime, and not as a slice of life. Spokon anime normally speaks about the themes you explain, like connection, ambition and competition.
    That's why i have always respected this anime, because of the way i look at it. It can be silly and extremely fun at times, but if you understand it as a sports anime (because come on, senshado is just as much a sport as voleyball in the GuP universe) you also absorb all these themes in the background.
    Really nice video essay, i love this content on youtube

    Please, make more GuP videos! This was really good!

    You are totally right. Quality content 👍💯🔝. Gup was my first anime and introduced me to a new world. That was fun and it's not finished yet. 9 years passed and it keeps me entertained, even though i watched it like 15 times. Now i'm waiting for part 4-6 of das finale but its a different genre amongst all others. Ok it may be not totally accurate but who cares? I absolutely love it and it helped me create my personal hobby, which is modelling. Thanks, i really appreciate it.

    I think the Girls und Panzer game can differ from certain views, since it has more story elements and fun. Also GUP such a great show to watch, knowing at least some history just makes it so enjoyable.
    After finishing the analyze, I agree the premise is amazing and at the very end the song Mika was singing seem to really influence you.

    I'm just recomended to read the manga after finishing the anime, because in the manga there is a lot information about each character especially about Nishizumi's Sister. GuP is one of my favourite anime so far but there's a lot of some 'plot hole' to be cover up. Sadly the Das Finale project will be last GuP anime. I wish the manga will going to tell the story more especially about the other school beside Oarai.

      You raise an interesting notion, good sir! But, if I am to be honest, I think that's the beauty of different mediums. I've read pretty much every medium involving Girls Und Panzer, from the original manga to the newest Das Finale. And especially with how close the mangaka's and anime staff worked in this project (and with the legend and myth Reiko Yoshida as their writer/script supervisor), I believe that manga vs. anime is more of a moot point. Basically, I am under the belief that the anime and manga are supposed to communicate and fill in the gaps of each other. They simply display different perspectives and emphasize on different things.
      Because, while the manga is more detailed whole with fewer plot holes, I think the anime presses on the emotional engagement through animation, sound, and with a different sense of story/themes. And this is why I often talk about Girls Und Panzer as an overarching story and world, rather than manga vs anime vs side story vs etc. It's more about what everything says as a whole rather than individual mediums. Talking about mediums individually is important since they'll focus on different things, but since they all share the Girls Und Panzer title and world, I think it's interesting to also look at it as a whole. In this case, i wanted to talk about the anime while being supported by the manga and side story material! That aside, thanks for dropping your ideas, as I think it's super interesting to talk about Girls Und Panzer in nuanced ways with its staff, audience, genres, and mediums in mind!
