@@tinyplaidninjas8868 The schools being absurdly large aircraft carriers(city carriers?) actually makes the plot of Ooarai being threatened to be closed down extremely justifiable compared to the normal sports/idol anime portrayal of "oh no our school is gonna be closed down". The sheer costs of keeping the School Carriers running is logically stupidly high so closing down 1 of the under-performing schools that does not have the results to justify its existence makes a lot of sense from a budgetary point of view.
GuP has a silly universe that has managed to have things that are logical in hindsight.

Senshado is stupid. Though thanks to the Manga expanding things. Personally fav "Ribbon No Musha" series. As it introduced Tankathlon. Basically, it started out as a "Poor Man's version of Senshado". As all tanks could weigh no more than 10-tons and it was pretty much the wild west of combat. I mean nearly anything goes. Right up to tanks using the crowds as cover. That shit don't fly in Senshado. Lol
It is cool to see the Senshado combat with big tanks slugging it out and see tye really big guns, like the Karl, have their moment to prove they did exist. Even if it is in an Anime but all the tanks in the Anime/Manga did exist to some degree.
Tankathlon is all about the scout tanks and light tanks, maybe getting up to your TDs and Light Mediums. If they ever make an anime version of Ribbon No Musha. They better do it justice.

A couple of things: The town the first battle against St. Gloriana and in the movie is modeled after the real town of Oarai , a few hours north of Tokyo (the insignia is a stylized version of the town's name, 大洗). The animators took real buildings, shops, and street scenes from this town and incorporated into the anime. I'm not sure why they chose this town, but the reason was to give them a boost after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. And it did turn the town into a mecca for fans of the anime.
If you're a military history nerd, you can appreciate some of the inside jokes. For example, we're told Saori's birthday is June 22nd, which is the day Germany invaded the Soviet Union and Hana's birthday is December 17th, which was the day of the start of the Battle of the Bulge. When Pravda demands Oarai's surrender, Momo says "Nuts!" which was the response of the 101st Airborne's commander to the German demand for surrender when the division was surrounded at Bastogne. The number of tanks in Saunder's inventory and how well supplied they are reflects how the US outproduced everyone else in WWII. Chihatan Academy's wanting to charge all the time is a reference to the tendency of the Japanese army, that is, when in doubt, human wave assault. Not to mention they did a really good job modeling actual WWII tanks and even though they're CGI, it's not too intrusive.
It's the charm of the underdog story done well and the work of voice actresses that wins you over. Just let it happen and don't think too hard. By the way, the English dub is horrible.

Being a WW2 history buff and tank fan makes Girls Und Panzer 100x better.
Pretty much every moment of a match is some history or tank joke, and my friend and I couldn't stop laughing through most of it. I watched it with my friend who isn't a tank nerd but likes anime, and I don't like anime but I love tanks, so together we were able to get most of the jokes. The show's not meant to be serious, its just fun, but it still has a certain reverence for the history behind the tanks, and explains just enough about each tank and nation to intrigue the viewer into wanting to learn more. My friend kept asking me history questions as I watched, proving the show does give people an interest in history who otherwise wouldn't care. It's not a documentary, but if it can get more people interested in history then it makes a positive impact on the world.
The tank community (meaning tank nerds and real tankers) never gets any love in pop culture and that unfortunately bleeds over into museums. WW2 planes have enough interest from the public that private collectors and public museums can afford to rebuild entire planes from a few parts and a serial number plate with a few million dollars, but tanks that cost a fraction as much to restore get left to rust or be scrapped as people forget about their history and the people that gave their lives fighting in them. Girls und Panzer is a small part of a wave of new interest in tanks and history, and at multiple points has directly helped museums across the world. I don't think it's "glorifying warfare", its not meant to be taken that seriously, but the vaccine to repeating history is knowing it, and Girls und Panzer gets people interested enough to learn.

Very well-acted, but everyone agrees it was just too boring and real and took itself too seriously to ever have a chance. There's a small but very devoted cult following for that one guy who dreamed of one day going to Colonel Sanders's cooking school. Much fanfiction has been written about him. Otherwise very forgettable.

If you are talking about the Centurion mk.1 which Alice uses, that is almost accurate. Some centurions were completed in 1944, and they were even shipped to europe in 1945 but never saw actual combat in WW2, so the Centurion is technically a post-war tank. If you are reffering to the M26 Pershing(mainstay tank of the team), they saw some combat in WW2 in late 1944 and throughout 1945, but not in large numbers. Still, the Pershing counts as a WW2 tank and is aproximately equivalent to a tiger I in combat power, even being slightly better. If you are reffering to the M24 Chaffe(Selection's light tanks), again, they were designed in WW2 and even produced then, but never put into combat then, i believe. The entire Selection team is styled more at a Korean War style force, rather than a WW2 one.

I believe in the side story maho literally say it's not a fair fight (nor is it supposed to be one) because it's a martial art, not a sport, another matter, besides how they get their hands on those things, is the cost and logistics on how they can keep their equipment operatable...

It embraces that insanity, the tanks are lovingly detailed, the battles are glorious, they do have bits of actual info of said vehicles and weapons, little references to actual events, important leaders of some wars and battles, the girls some actually have some names of historical significance and ironically a number of them not to mention the nation schools they belong to has some fun referencing historical behavior or importance and traits.

12:30 people are actively betting on their property being destroyed because that means free renovations. In a way, it would make the city renewal a lot easier to be justified (even if it's uncontrolled). Just throw in a match at a place that needs city renewal and have both teams roam crazy in the city, and rebuild everything in the city afterwards. That is an insane and ridiculous way of keeping the economy alive and actually have logic in it (which is crazy)
Edit: You also missed the part that these are all Japanese. They might be expats but their nationality is Japan. The winner of the National leagues goes to international matches (kuromine destroyed the german team, for example). No need to single out Girls und Panzers, its pretty much a trope of almost *all* anime of schoolchildren being allowed to openly command lethal force.....
Take probably the most well known in the Western world - Pokemon. If Pokemon were real, there is NO WAY anyone under the age of 18 would be allowed to stray within several hundred yards of a Pokemon, let alone tame them and FIGHT them. Mice that electrocute you, giant rats that gnaw through not only your bones but your soul too, anything that looks like a cute pet (dog/horse/cat) breathes fire, adorable ducks that can give you a cerebral hemorrhage just by looking at you (not to mention the fact they also are walking ticking bombs), and a cute cat/fox hybrid that seems harmless enough, but can evolve into creatures that will electrocute you, drown you, set you on fire, rot your soul, explode your brain, rip you to pieces with leaves, freeze you to death, or deliberately sooth your senses until you believe it harmless before eating you. And I havnt even started on the fire-breathing dragons......
But no, its perfectly OK for kids to play with them....

@@gunnargunnarsson5963 Phineas and Ferb is not representative of Western animation though, it is comedy, it is supposed to be a total piss take, the fact the kids can build spaceships etc. is supposed to be the funny part.
In the Japanese example I gave, there is no assumed comedic value of ten year olds possessing a pocket full of pets they can command at will each capable of razing an entire city to the ground and killing everyone living in it. The only comedic value implied in Pokemon is the ability of Jesse and James (and their Pokemon) to constantly get hit by 100% assured lethal to normal human beings force and merely 'blast off again' (which in itself is lethal force as them falling back to earth would kill them).

My take is that the GuP universe is the product of a post-scarcity Kardishev 2+ civillisation, almost certainly a hyper-real simulation on a Matrioska brain or other super-advanced computer. The characters are actually uploaded minds who have edited their own memories to participate in a form of extreme role play gaming to become their in-game personas. Obviously when they exit to the overworld they have their full knowledge returned, but we only see the in-game segments.
They can't get hurt because it's not allowed by the rules of the simulation, and the universe and society doesn't have to make historical, economic or social sense, any more than the Mushroom kingdom or a JRPG setting does. It also explains why no-one in universe notices how crazy things are, because the simulation acts as a censor, preventing them from thinking about it.

The condition for leaving was probably that she stopped practicing senshado, since a big deal is made when she shows up commanding Oarai. The threat of disowning doesn't actually happen until the Pravda match, but never gets carried through because Miho kinda proved Shiho wrong by winning the tournament following her own way. As for Boko, keep in mind that one of the core principles of Japanese morality is that you should 'keep on trying your best'. Quite often, it is thought more important that you continue to try than whether you succeed. Of course, Boko takes it to an absurd level, but one of the interesting aspects of Girls und Panzer is that it also makes fun of Japanese culture. They even included the Kamikaze-like behaviour of the 'Japanese school', even though that is a subject that most anime tends to avoid.
The English -school girl who does the suicide manoeuver has something to prove. We don't notice it in the translation, but in Japanese, she speaks with a lower-class accent, while the rest of her school have upperclass accents. The show is full of little details like that.

The NFL certainly has rules against filming team practices, but secondary school and post-secondary schools typically don't have that rule. In fact, most Universities across Canada and the USA will try to recruit coaches from other schools, and incentivize them to bring all the training material they've gathered, including film of the current team, and dossiers on returning players.

But G'dammit, it' hooked me! Put my rational brain aside for a few episodes and enjoyed it more than I dare confess. Now I've seen them all and finally saw Part 3 of "Das Finale" the other night. (Sadly I'll probably not get to see Part 4 until next year! AGGGGG)
    Well done video
