Getting the pronunciation of Emu correct gets you a Golden Wombat sticker. You're on your way to being a true Honorary Aussie. All that's missing now is you making the trip down here. Good on ya mate!

you are just trying to lure us there to rob our corpses after the drop bears killed us!
@@thecursed01 Yes. But in fairness, the drop bears only attack in their nesting season, which for the uninitiated runs from November through to August. September & October is Magpie swooping season & even the drop bears stay away then.
I had foreigners argue with me and saying that I was wrong when I, an Australian, was trying to tell them how to pronounce Emu. They weren’t even American.
As an American who's been living in Australia for almost 14 years now, this video hits different. It's as if I am watching my internal dialogue give a Ted talk over the past 14 years. I was born in the US but at the point I consider my self Australian. I say mate more than some Aussies I know, C*** no longer shocks me as it does Americans. I've been part of many Aussie Aussie Aussie chants and I've burnt the ever living hell out of my mouth because I didn't bother letting my meat pie from the servo cool down before shoving it in my gob.
Happy AUSTRALIA DAY my fellow AUSSIES ❤️🇦🇺❤️

I’m Aussie. There’s a stereotype that the world doesn’t like Americans. I’ve met a few Americans overseas and loved them. They were open minded, patriotic and inquisitive and friendly people. I’m glad we’re friends.

What's even better than you learning about Australia is that your whole family are learning about it! Your little ones are growing up with 3 cultures! ☮️💞🙂🇦🇺
So True!

Cartoon about a blue cattle dog and his family, ist sooo Aussie!
They already do watch Bluey! 😂

That bloke must have spent a lot of time with his Aussie friend, his sense of humour has rubbed off on him. This is a very funny video and incredibly accurate. Keep up the good work Ian.
As an Aussie I found that mostly accurate and funny and as a side note today is Australia Day
My "happy Australia Day message is Pinned in the other Video I just posted 😎😎🎉🎉
To clarify shrimp and prawns are actually two distinct animals. Though both belong to the family of marine life called Decapod crustaceans, the various types of shrimp each fall under the suborder Pleocyemata, while prawn species belong to the Dendrobranchiata suborder. Prawn has three pairs of legs while shrimp has only two however, at the end of the day Australians don't care and call them both prawns.
Nah mate - just call them all delicious!!!
Thanks, I didn't realize.. I though Prawn/Shrimp were just common generic names like Cat, Dog, Corn/Maze etc.
>
[edit] Yeah I just checked, We call both gene lines "Prawn" in Australia. So prawn is the common generic name we use. That being said we also do know the different species.
Very good explanation. I was going to comment but your answer was way more thorough. I think the confusion lies in the fact that Americans tend to call both, "Shrimp" and most Australians call them both "Prawns". As in, "Shrimp Cocktail" and "Prawn Cocktail" Both are actually made with Shrimp. Whereas, in Australia, we tend to specify types of prawns more, such as, Green Prawns or King Prawns.
@@markleon411 Yeah, It's just a generic name for us. If in Australia just call them prawns. We try not to get too caught up in scientific detail, I guess the USA is the same with calling everything shrimp.
do you boil them or flame grill them? and what dipping sauce? So many questions 😅
As an ACTUAL Australian , that was good . Old Mate there actually DOES get it and understand . As do you Ian . Lotsa Fun .
I’m an Aussie with an American accent. The reason for that is that I’ve been a teacher at American international schools overseas for 25 years. Every time I go home for a visit, I’m asked the same question, you guessed it ( are you from the USA ).
He's right about the trees too. Not only are eucalyptus very flamable, a lot of them will drop a branch without warning.
A branch? So that is what hit me! I thought a drop bear had me, and left the area at some speed, and with loud noises of alarm and distress. Anyway, I was fast enough to elude my pursuer, but if it was only a branch, I could have walked.
@@ironside210 That's where the term 'Drop Bear' came from ... some unsuspecting koala sleeping off his midday snack and the branch he's sleeping on drops to the ground, scaring the crap out of both him and the tourist he landed on. 😂🤣
This is the best American info video on Australia out there. The vast majority was pretty accurate and it was funny too. Also thank you pronouncing emu properly Ian. Your a bloody legend 👏 😂
I really enjoyed that. Wow, your Aussie pronunciation is excellent Ian, we're so proud of you! I think we should dub you an honourary Aussie, on this Australia Day! Thanks
I love how you love us Aussies and Australia in particular, I pray that one day when you come down under you will fit right in just love it ❤
Beautifully said.
Hey Ian, did you know that Tasmania has the tallest flowering plants in the world? The Mountain Ash tree grows to over 100 metres and is found in World Heritage protection zones in Tassies' spectacular mountains.
It also grows in Victoria and is also called Stringy Bark.
@@barnowl5774 I thought that they was different trees because when I lived in Tasmania and when we would go an cut fire wood we would try and get stringy bark because it burns so good 👍
@@Adam-ik4wfI looked it up on Wikipedia a while ago and it said that Mountaim Ash (sounds like an English tree) was also known as Stringy GUM -not bark (my mistake) and Swamp Gum. There are many of them growing in the Dandenong Ranges, east of Melbourne.
Well done Ian, for an American Citizen you’ve become a True Australian….you’ve listened, learned and taken in everything about our culture…. I know you would probably never leave the US but you would fit right in here in Australia…..🇦🇺👍.
Ian your knowledge of Australia is incredibly impressive. And I have learned so much about my own country through some of the videos you react to. No word of a lie, you know more about Australia than a good amount of Aussies.
I hadn’t seen this one before, it was fun. You really have learned a lot.
That was the most accurate depiction of Australians I have ever seen on CZcams. And it was up to date. Hooray!
Yes Ian you have to look into the story about the guy re the succulent Chinese meal, his story is legendary here in Oz. Relating to that check out band from Nambour in Qld, The Chats, who wrote a song about that story "Dine-n-dash" very funny. They actually have a better song called "Smoko" you must watch that clip on YTube, I am sure you will think it funny.
I reckon all Americans should watch Sir Les Patterson on Parkinson, 1982, Pt. 1. They’ll be totally bewildered.

Love the “Get Stuffed” ending… he nailed us to a tee.
The thing most Americans dont get about Australians is our humour . No one takes themselves too seriously and anyone who cant laugh at themselves will have the piss taken out of them mercilessly by their mates. We hate authority , snobs, and anyone who thinks they are a little bit better than the rest of us. That probably comes from being under British aristocracy rule for so long. But we are loyal to our mates and straight shooters, if we are making fun of you it means we like you . Aussie Aussie Aussie .
Get stuffed mate. 🤣😛 This is me taking the piss. 😄

Hi from Oz. Your knowledge is impressive 🙂 Good onya 👍
You have gained the honorary title of Old Mate. This title is important to us. Everyone here loves Old Mate.
The funny guy can't read numbers. He missed one when he said we have about 600,000 (mainly feral) camels. Try 6,000,000. Numbnuts...they're everywhere. Lol. By the way, Ian...we DON"T call the liquor stores "bottle-o's", we call them "bott-lows". Cheers from Oz.
And it's "ow-ya-goin'". We DON'T pronounce the "h". Just sayin'. Love your stuff.
👍 Good to see finally that the late great legend Errol Flynn was in there and got recognised. There's a lot of people all over the world that use the saying IN LIKE FLYNN but don't know where or who it come from and it's apparently because Errol was supposed to have slept with all his female co.stars hence that he got in with them easy and on a side note most people don't know that he was Tasmanian 😀 good video Ian 👍
The Australian formula: small population + a shit ton of resources = prosperity.
Ian you are correct , the best description of prawn and shrimp is that you could say they are cousin's , they definately aren't the same but are similar and eaten similarly.
The yeah na or na yeah thing still gets me , I'm in Tassie and the only people I know that use that term are ex NSW girls around the late 20 to early 30 age group, had never heard it until about 4-5 years ago
@SlingShot lol Tassie , it's ex NSW people that move here that say it , maybe it was a Queensland NSW saying
That’s as Funny as Shit . I really enjoyed that as an Aussie . Well Done from Somerville Victoria 👍👍👍
I’m an Aussie and this video had me laughing. Good one, thanks.
Your one of our mate's now, your a honorary Aussie without even stepping one foot on to our land have a great day Ian & family cheers
Happy Australia Day mate
Hi Ian, the succulent Chinese meal bit it something you need to look up. It’d be an hilarious clip to react to. Back in the 90, I think it was, a guy who apparently resembled a mafia boss (or similar) was arrested. His response was hilarious and has become a very popular meme here in Oz. Look for “Democracy Manifest” on CZcams, you won’t regret it. Also no one says nah yeah, just yeah nah.
You are generally correct with things about Australia, and you also seem pretty chilled for a yank, you would fit right in if you moved here. I enjoy watching your vids, keep up the good work 👍
Good one, right on Australia day too
Watch the Australia Day 2023 broadcast from Sydney. Was extraordinary. Keen on your response. 😊
You are a true Aussie at heart mate. You say how we Aussie have a great outlook on life and living it, that should be modelled after by the rest. I gotta say thanks, and I do agree ..... but truth be told, I find unless people from elsewhere are open minded, and willing to accept that our sometimes harsh sounding words and ways truly are just said and done in jest, and often even lovingly, then they will just call us crude and unrefined and want us kept far away from their loved ones. I kid you not. I once spoke to a fella on a chat forum made for those who are struggling with cancer in any of it stages including survivors and family members who are going through it with them or have lost loved ones to cancer. It was an Australian forum, made by a couple of Aussies, a husband and wife who were dealing with her cancer diagnosis and was frequented by mainly Aussies. But of course, we welcomed anyone from anywhere if you needed others to talk with who were going through these things. This fella who reached out, on an Aussie forum, and chastised me for calling him mate. He was from England and his name was Charles and told me not to be rude and to call him by his name, Charles, never Charlie, and certainly not mate. All I did was welcome him to the forum by saying "Welcome mate, how ya goin'. Hope we can help you with what you need here.". That was apparently very rude. That's fine, to each his own, I just never interacted with him again. You are more open and accepting that a great many unfortunately, but lucky for us, we found you ! You have also shown us that not all Yanks are backwards hillbilles, and that some of you even have brain cells. You are a wonderful fella and you have a lovely, beautiful family and we thank you for sharing yourself and them with us. We are more the richer for it.
Shrimp have one pair of legs that include claws at the end, but prawns have three pairs with claws. Prawns also tend to have legs that are a bit longer in relation to the size of the body than shrimp of similar size.
God it's refreshing to hear an American say Emu correctly. Thank you.
You are a lot of fun mate and your knowledge of Australia is now excellent. You picked his mistakes straight away.
The meaning of the Paul Hogan “shrimp on the barbie” joke has almost been lost to time at this point. He was showing a king prawn but calling it a shrimp. That’s the joke, that even our “shrimps” are so big.
Yeh you got the Aussie lingo and slang down pretty well for an American mate 👍

@IWrocker, prawns are shrimp, and shrimp are prawns, but yabbies aren't! 😂😂
Fun Fact: The Paul Hogan commercial (ad) where he says "Put (or chuck) another shrimp on the barbie" was originally made with him calling them prawns, but as the commercial (ad) was generally made for the American audience, the American Tourist Board (or whatever they're called) didn't think Americans would know what prawns are, and requested the commercial be re-shot with him calling them shrimp instead. As the commercial (ad) was played here too.......a LOT......shrimp caught on here too, so some call them shrimp while others still call them prawns, and some don't care and call them by either name.
Nope. Not the same. Theyre cousins. To do with several things but most obviously differing sets of claws on the legs. Taste si ilar. Used similarly. NOT the same creature. Google it.
@@kerrydoutch5104 same family so close enough to be the same, unlike yabbies, and lobsters, etc. yabbies and crayfish are the same family, but are not like shrimp or prawns. Plus, I was joking! 😊
@@namewithheldbygoogleforsec673 I get what youre saying. Butstill not the same. Like saying kangaroos and wallabies are the same. Or that horses and donkeys are the same. They can do similar things and live similar lives and eat similar stuff. But theyre not the same.
@@kerrydoutch5104 I understand but they're more closer related than horses and donkeys (even though horses and donkeys are the same family.....Equine) and kangaroos and wallabies. Prawns and shrimp are more closer related, like Red Kangaroos and Grey Kangaroos are closer related. Wallabies, though in the same family, are not as close related to kangaroos as the two kangaroos i mentioned.......just like prawns and shrimp are closer related to each other than yabbies and lobster are related! Same same but different! 😊

you are so nice, just as nice as Canadians. Aussies like Canadians, they are so nice.
Yes, parts of Skylab landed in Western Australia. NASA was fined for littering. There’s still parts of Skylab that you can see in the Esperance Museum.
You are right that Shrimp and Prawns are different species of crustacean.
That was a good video. Thank you.
Please review all, and I mean all of the Australia day lamb advertisements...you will love them.
Fosters is a Aussie beer, was popular to drink till mid 1980s but VB is the popular beer here.
Nice one Ian.
Good attempt on the intro but you gotta turn it all into one long word to get your full Aussie credentials.
Owyagoinmateorrite?
🍻
The only Shrimp I've come across in Fishing was fresh water. And they only grow to about an Inch in length. Prawns however are About 6 to 7 inches long and are a good feed. One other thing people get wrong is Australia wasn't settled by convicts. It was over a period of 84 years 184,000 convicts were sent to Australia. There Time deepened on what they did. 3 to 5 years were mostly the sentences. But once their time was served they had the option to return to England. Only 3% of those stayed in Australia and started a new life for themselves. Those who returned had families.
The comment about NASA being find for littering is true. When Skylab came down to earth a lot of the pieces landed in an area between the towns of Esperance and Balladonia. The local council issued a $400.00 fine for littering to the NASA team that was doing the recovery. The fine was issued as a joke but never paid.
gee that is a nice chassis on the young lady with the shorts and Aussie flag!
You should try Canada next. Fun facts for you, the most recent province of Canada came to be in 1999. Before _that_ it was joined in 1949. So, depending on how you look at it, Canada as it currently exists is just over 20 years old. More fun: They needed a name for the new province, and were taking suggestions. The most popular suggestion was "Bob's Your Uncle". Then you can look into their largest original oil and gas company, Petro Canada, which was _originally_ going to be called Oil Canada, but someone objected when they realized this would be shortened to Oil Can. :)
That was funny , great stuff
yes you are right, shrimp and prawn are two different animals
When are you going to pay us a visit? The weather here is pretty good compared to what the USA is experiencing at the moment.
You're a good bloke ...good on you cobber.
I’d call shrimp freshwater, prawns as saltwater. We catch shrimp from the Murray as fish bait and I’ve never heard of anyone eating them.
Prawns are found in Oz in salt water shrimps are found in fresh water along with yabbies and fresh water lobsters. Shrimps are big enough to cook for a BBQ I wouldn't bother with them, yabbies can be cooked up and in most states the fresh water lobster is illegal to catch coz there numbers are very low. So if you want that sort of thing on the BBQ go the prawn there easier to come by and the most likely to be chucked on the BBQ and cook up some blue swimmer crabs too for a decent feed.
G'day mate .. Aussie here .. how they hanging? 🙂
Seriously though .. this video was generally pretty close to describing your typical Aussie (Ozzy) and it sort of boils down to having a 'fun loving' but in the main, 'realistic' outlook on life. We tend to have a 'work to live' attitude rather than a 'live to work' one. Maybe living in a society where we actually care about one another and don't mind paying a little extra in our taxes to make sure others not so well off are looked after .. helps!
Little things like a month+ fully paid annual leave (vacation) and 'Universal Healthcare' system that means you can access decent medical care if you should ever need it, gives you a great feeling of 'peace of mind' and that sort of thing in itself gives you freedom to enjoy life to the full.
Anyhow .. have to sign off now .. need to take my pet kangaroo for a hop around the block.
