    Rip Optane. You were a good addition to the PC space that helps give HDD a good speed boost. Although it probably came at the forefront of going full SSDs as mentioned by previous news. Maybe they should use that label as an entry to mid level SSD in the future. Still cheers to your existance 🥂.

      I honestly liked what Optane could do with big drives. It just sadly wasn't well-supported and was kinda pricey for people who didn't really understand what it did.

    Intel optane was actually good it's just that Intel went too hard on locking it out to only newer Intel systems when that kind of system implementation could be done on older non-intel hardware as well.

      I think its insistence to exclusivity and not moving beyond a hard drive cache in the consumer market killed it.

      And their persistent memory DIMMs being exclusive to high end Xeons helped Intel, but really hurt the adoption of the tech.
      And now it seems like they're losing that advantage over EPYC CPUs when they could really use any advantage they can get.

      You could look into the old SUN cards, they're SLC ssd's so they'll last an eternity (I think the 300gb card has like 8pb write endurance)

    Imagine getting an Nvidia graphics card only a few years ago.. and Nvidia already dropping the support for it. It's kind of nuts. I know some people that game on those in WoW, with 2018-2019 laptops and desktops. Even the children of some of my friends use those.

    I never understood optane when it came out. It’s the in between Hdd and ssd but only worked on 8gen intel and up. So you might as well get an ssd at that point.

      It was faster than the SSD's of the time. But yeah, currently SSD's have become so fast and cheap, Optane doesn't make much sense anymore...

      It was more like between SSD and RAM whn you looking at latency, and bandwidth was similar to SSD, it was just too expensive to use as standalone SSD and too slow to use as RAM.

      while slower for bulk transfers, it was much much faster for latency and thus IOPS, typical usages in server space were for swap memory, not as a replacement for bulk storage
      it also has much higher write endurance

      Just a small hint: Optane in on itself is a memory type - not a drive form factor. It can and is being used in NVM Memory for servers and SSD's and in that regard is unmatched in speed and durability over any other non volatile memory on the market.

The consumer market expanded year over year at a rate thats dwarfed previous growth. If you're saying this due to optane its kinda pointless as of recently even if its nice and it was hardly a consumer product for the most part.

Many, many small companies run on exactly the same type of hardware. How are you going to push PCs out of stores? Banks? Not going to happen as long as people work in those places.

    Intel Optane was cool when SSDs were expensive, low capacity and HHDs were common but once SSDs price went down, capacity went up, and speeds increased…

      havent come down enough to replace regular storage HDD just yet though my 12TB HGST is 288$ even if someone was making a 12tb i would estimate 100$ per TB that is alot of money compared to 288$

      @@PainX187 I guess a HDD is still necessary if you have a slow internet connection. I have a 2TB nvme ssd and it can store every game and movie that I want no problem. If it gets full I can delete a game or movie and just redownload it later in a minute or two. The time spent downloading is substantially less than the cumulative time wasted waiting for HDDs to read data.

      @@rubiconnn even with fast internet the time spent would be greater and less hassle then just booting the game from a HDD, run an SSD as a boot drive and put large games or games not requiring and SSD onto the HDD and you still get good boot times, HDDs often suffer when windows is installed on the same drive, but in general they aren't that much slower, I have a drive from 2005 which is perfectly happy to boot the games on it within a minute or so, idk if this is some flex on your storage and connection speed or what but in no logical world is it easier to delete a game, install the one you want, go through the file verification process most launchers have, then boot the game, and your also just racking up a load of unnecessary writes.

    I know a lot of techtubers loved Optane but it seemed like such a niche product. It was fast but bog standard pcie SSDs are fast enough even for workstations, and the cost per gb was always ridiculously high. It just seemed like bragging rights for competitive benchmarking.

      They didn't do a good enough job at getting it into retail channels.

      i got optane hardware in an nvme m.2 and shockingly 970 evo plus by itself seems out of the game, after the avg 4sec bios bootup it boots into windows in less than 2sec

      Non-volatile memory is still much slower, and for some things that really does matter. Volatile memory is just so expensive too.
      And recent non-volatile memory also has terrible write endurance. Fine if you aren't changing the data much, but not for those same uses that Optane was good for.

      My old sata 840 Pro is faster than my nvme 980 for a lot of tasks in the same machine.

    I live in Canada, my next Nvidia GPU will cut down on my heating costs during the 3 months of winter and 5 months of "winterish" because it's dual purpose, gonna pipe the exhaust ports down to my toes with some dryer vent tubing and game in comfort.......

      Unless you heat your house with electricity, it can only make your heating bill worse. Electricity is the least effecient way to heat your house, so replacing gas or heat pumps with a GPU is worse.

      @MaverickBlue actually electricity is 100% efficient at heating (when in electric heating elements) so it's actually very efficient. It's just that electricity is more expensive as a fuel source so compared to other sources. Sorry to be a pedant :) heat pumps can have a coefficient of 2-4 - 200-400% efficient... Still here in the UK electricity is at least 6 times the price of mains Gas per kWh so unless you're self consuming power from PV's it's always going to be more expensive to run. (At the moment)

    Woah now, integrated graphics are just as important as their graphics cards and moving it down in priority is a big mistake. If anything ever happened to my GPU I *need* my iGPU or my laptop/desktop would be useless. There's also the people who simply cannot afford to buy or run a power hungry dedicated GPU and want to game only using their processor.

      AMD dropped integrated graphics to only have select G variants is poor timing due to the GPU prices.
      The would have quite the moneymaker with APUs, and may have decided either we get GPU grade integration in the APU, or no graphics in the CPU.

    I built a machine still in use today in 2012 with an Intel mobo. Intel removed every bit of driver and documentation from their site. It’s pitiful and I still haven’t forgiven them for that move. I suppose Octane will receive a similar treatment.

    Honestly man, with the amount i am paying in electricity bills right now i wouldn't mind if the next couple of generations have no performance gains but only power efficiency gains.

      Same. Most "gamers" only care for raw performance, if a new gpu doesn't give them more FPS it's not worth it.
      If i can get more fps for a major cut in power consumption, i see it as a big win since it means my pc is going to be more affordable to run (10+ hours a day since i also work in it), more silent (less TDP = slower fans) and since i'm into small cases, i could afford a nkce graphics card without a heatsink big as a brick

    This week I went to format some PCs at work and I was happily surprised that the 6th gen has the same driver as the 10th gen. Great support for 6th gen who are already 7 years old. A few days later I see this news that they will end support until the 10th gen, which is only 2 years old, very disappointing
