  • Pastor Colin Smith preached this sermon "Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit" on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3) at The Orchard EFC in suburban Chicago in 2012.
    If you like the series, you'll enjoy the book the series inspired: Momentum: Pursuing God’s Blessings through the Beatitudes from Moody Publishers.
    Sermon Series Description:
    The Beatitudes are not telling you how to become a Christian-they tell you what a true Christian looks like. Everyone wants to be blessed. We want to be blessed in life, blessed in death, and blessed in eternity. In the Beatitudes, the Son of God tells us about the life that is blessed and about the people who are blessed. But Jesus does more than just describe a blessed life-He gives us a way to actually pursue it.

    Nothing in my hands I bring.
    Only to the cross I cling.
    Sweet.

    I am blessed to be flat on my back in. I can’t go anywhere, do anything, etc. But it does by His Grace put me in a position to hear, understand and respond to our loving Abba God, the one and only Sovereign King over everything. I am so so so humbled to bow before Him, in His radiating presence where He dwells in unapproachable light. Wow! I mean, WOW! And He is the One who comes to us. Let that sink in. Thank you our most beloved YHWH Elohim. Oh the joy of discovery and rediscovery of Truth. And thank you pastor Colin for doing the hard work of preparing many hours to serve the locally and electronically.

    Beautiful. This is what I need to make heaven my home. I am absolutely nothing without Jesus. I needed to hear this. I pray the a lord blesses you in a way he sees fit, because I was on my way out until I realized listening to this that God doesn’t owe me anything just cause I believe he is real.
    I love you Jesus 🙌 I am very sorry for my pride 😢 thank you for this Lord I will not come and go as if I am owed a thing, because I have nothing that equals what you give. I praise you and need you always🙌

    Lord, I know You are working in my life to make me poor in spirit. I see Your hand in all my suffering. I know You must increase and I must decrease. It is so opposite of the pop psychology of today which tells us we must have high esteem of ourselves. May I boast of none of self, but of all of You.

    People who are poor in spirit give up idea He owes us.
    Pride leads to bitterness which kills blessing.
    I owe God everything, He owes me nothing.
    People who are poor in spirit aren’t afraid to ask. Much in prayer. Those who know their need prayer.

    "Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." {MATT5:3}
    "I dwell in the High and Holy Place, but also with him who is a contrite and lowly Spirit." {ISA57:15}
    This is a huge and an all-encompassing thought process that most of us Christians hardly understand,
    as most of us do not even realize that pride rules within us, as we vie for positions of leadership and recognition, even within the Body of Christ.
    Those that find it important to be a 'leader', a 'rabbi', a 'father', an 'apostle', a 'prophet', a 'master', a 'teacher', etc.,
    do not understand that our Heavenly Father only dwells in those that are poor in Spirit, that have a contrite and lowly Spirit, that are 'always begging'.
    Instead of arrogance and pride before Almighty Father, where we assert our place and our importance,
    trying to impress Him with all that we do, and all that we are, and our titles, and our knowledge; we should call to mind the message in this video,
    "Heaven is in the humble before the humble are in Heaven."
    Be aware if we exalt ourselves, and repent if we have, for "One is your Master, even Christ, and you are all brethren", "Nor be called leaders, for One is your Leader, the Christ", "But he who is the greatest among you, let him be your servant. For whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." {MATT23:8-12; EPH4:13-32; TITUS1: 5-16}.
    Amen, "Blessed are the poor in Spirit.....Heaven belongs to them. Christ Jesus make me poor in Spirit..."

    I came to watch this after watching Poirot's The ABC Murders. (The unfortunate Mr Cust was sitting in a prison cell, very close to being sentenced to the gallows. He was reading this verse from his Bible as Poirot enters to speak to him. The poor man had literally nothing to save him but fortunately Poirot intervenes).

    I’ve listened to this sermon for over 10 years. I’ve come back to it so many times because of my need to restart my momentum.
    Praise be to God for his kindness to us in the face of our pride, thankful for teaching us humility through the example of the Son.

    This is where it is at
    an attitude of the Beatitudes
    Many people are seeking to be blessed and inherit the blessings and favor where Christ said blessed are the poor in spirit you notice how he said in spirit the poor in spirit and not poverty-stricken but humble gentle meek and lowly servant in spirit not the blessed me gospel
