      I'd bring it to a tuner to run through. There are some guys who are tuned around that milage. Someone like Morendi can do a remote tune with and log some data to make sure the tune is running well for you.

    So an M278 (‘14 S550) can handle 600WHP fine, but I’ve heard throwing 600 at the trans, even with TCU Tune, you’re likely to destroy it.

    • @TunedMercedes
      @TunedMercedes  Před rokem +3

      The transmission can likely handle 850-900 whp without upgrades. In fact MB used this transmission for years on the 65 and 600 engines. TCU tune helps a lot man, I'd almost recommend doing it before ECU. It's at least as much of an impact on performance imho. ECU is better when rolling, TCU can be felt more from a dig.

      @@TheT1r1 @UCmT-4ZSvBhxZLNf28WrXoyA Black boost will give you more power than the risers plus filters. But there is some power to be gained with taking out the huge MB filters and lifting them out of the way of the intake. I can understand the thought of just going to the best, but I think risers plus performance filters do make a pretty big impact. I'm not sure anyone on the MBworld list of fastest m157s are using stock air filters. Some do use risers. I've heard people have made their own. Some on Facebook.com/tunedmercedes like Tyler have run their own 65 amp scorpion style intakes, which DTK used, and those are likely even better than the black boost in terms of pure air intake and power creation.

    Great video! Would you say the M157 or the M177 is the definitive AMG twin turbo V8 if both are stock?

    • @TunedMercedes
      @TunedMercedes  Před 2 lety

      I would have said the m157, especially later ones with the updated timing chain. But Eugene from Morendi mentions that he actually thinks the m177 is the better engine and smarter upgrade for those currently with m278. He basically said you can make a lot of power with m278 and m157 the issue is keeping it reliable.

    • @austingtir
      @austingtir Před 7 měsíci

      M177 is hands down the better engine. M157 have bent rods from the factory which is just one of the root causes of manyof their issues. 2015 up (not sure on the date they changed the bore material) M278 are the only version of the external V turbo biturbo engine thats really worth buying imho as they never changed the bore material on the m157 or fixed the bent rod issue. The early m157 and 278 (pre late 2013) are almost complete junk until you do timing chains, tensioners and check valves. late 2013 up are better but still have major issues. M177 has issues too but nothing as ridiculous as sheer amount of stuff wrong with m157/m278 Tuning a m157 is literally playing russian roulette imo. The 278 is a little better in some instances because of longer piston skit (still has the same bent rods) but it doesnt tend to manifest bent rods and the bore scoring as much because of the longer piston skirt and smaller bore (and less people tune m278 than m157). If you pull your 278 or 157 down and fix all the issues including checking and putting straight rods in it they are then great engines that should be pretty reliable.

    Nope, not gunna mess with my GLE 63s. I built the daylights out of my c6z06 which was probably perfectly balanced at the stock 505hp and it was not nearly as fun or reliable after the mechanical mods and tune. I was held hostage by tuners and mechanics that didn't seem to care as much about my car once they got all the cash for 'fixing" it up.

      I get what you are saying but MB has a long history of being tuned Carlsson, Brabus, Renntech, AMG, and a great platform for a tuner car. Some cars are better left alone. MB is not one of them. It's a canvas to make arguably the best cars in the world.
