BMW N52 & N53 (E90 330i) - The Last Naturally Aspirated BMW Straight Six Engine

  • With the E90 generation 3 series we saw the introduction of a new BMW N/A straight six. The N52 and the N53 are the final naturally aspirated straight-6 engine's produced by BMW, ending a history of continuous production of this engine configuration since the M30 in 1968. The N53 began to be phased out following the introduction of the N20 turbocharged straight-4 engine in 2011.
At the time of the engine's release we didn't realize we were seeing the last in the line of BMW's signature engine configuration. With this video, we take a look at what made the naturally aspirated petrol 6 such a success and joy to drive.

Today marks 4 years of owning my first BMW, a 125i with N52. 44k miles later, it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Flex Rogers Well, I spent the last few days searching info about the N52 and N53 and there are a ton of horror stories. N52 using 2l/2000km oil. N53 having HPFP failures, Injectors and some other things, though they say the N53 has largely been cured with the excessive oil consumption. I want one, but these things really stop me..

    I had a M52, M54, N43, N53, and N55.
Best BMW R6 engine was the M52 singe VANOS. It was the last mechanical R6. No e-gas, simple cat setup, mechanical cooling management, port injection, modular construction, ...
The N52 ist ok, but it uses an early version of the Valvetronic system, which is susceptible for heavy waer. But it's the last R6 with port injection.
The N53/N43 was an very experimental engine(different Lambda operating modes, NOx, ...). If it's runnig, it's very strong, with nice characteristic. But if something isn't working properly, you are doomed. It's so over complicated, that even BMW shops can't handle the diagnostics.

My 2010 f10 528i has a 3L naturally aspirated with a ZHP box. Best feeling ever. The gearbox actually does all the work. Car is responsive and powerful, hard to tell that there isn’t a turbo. Dono if that set up was exclusive to my region cause online it says it’s a 2L turbo. But honestly speaking, all bmws should feel this way. Turbos should be an option rather then an obligation. Raw Bmw engines fast or not are exactly what a car enthusiast needs. Turbos are such a gimmick, gearboxes are doing all the work.

My parents own a 325i N53 since 2012, great overall engine + car. Sound a bit odd when idling due to the direct and lean injection, but smooth when you touch the pedal.
Last year I've bougt a 130i (N52) myself. Really cool car with descent sound in whole range.
Sometimes I get a Z4 35is for a weekend trip from my neighbour, really fast and cool car, but not that refined as the 130i. It's faster and the sound is louder, but not more fun.
The N54 is a 'on or off' engine, not that great for cruising.
The naturally aspirated engines are less tempting on that way, but when flooring it, the reward is higher. Higher the revs, higher the power!

       Jason Tietnan Cool, congratz!
My original backbox has been modified by an exhaust specialist. Made some changes inside to optimize the sound with the original looks.
Sounds a bit 'richer' and louder. I'm hesitating to delete my mid-silencer as well. Tried to remove the backbox completely, but that souned really awfull, like a ricer.
Lots of people change their box to an N55 (135i) backbox. It's easier and sounds very nice, however, I liked the OEM look more than the 135i design ( they have bigger, black endtips).
      Other upgrades are:
      - Bilstein B12 kit
      - M-performance Alcantara steering wheel
      - M3 wishbones on front (more camber to avoid understeer)
      - 335i E93 wishbones at the back
      - Limited slip differential
      - Styling 72 E46 wheels with Michelin PS4's

@@OvertakeFilms I loved my 330, a car that I really regret selling. The M140i was the biggest disappointment; very fast with an amazing engine and gearbox but rubbish steering and awful suspension and chassis set up.
To drive my 130i was probably my favourite albeit, it was modified. It had Birds B1 suspension courtesy of the previous owner and I fitted camber plates, M3 LCA’s and a 135i backbox to add sone extra noise. Looked great on the BBS 216 wheels too. I loved chasing the redline out of corners in it. Downside was it was bloody tiny inside (not great for chucking kids and dogs in).

Z4 Coupe 3.0si. Stiffest chassis BMW ever produced, N52 engine. M sport pack (including sport suspension), everything stock. My car.
I bought it in large parts, because of the engine. Yes, the Z4 M has more power, a slip diff and hydraulic steering. It IS the better car.
But the 3.0si is much lighter and thus an awesome drive. Given the choice between the two (and I had the choice), I'd pick the 3.0si anytime again. Yes, after driving both back2back.

@Zombie Head According to BMW engineering, the torsional stiffness of the Z4 Coupe is at 32000Nm/deg, which by far exceeds everything, BMW has ever build to date. Given the relative "lightness" (its no Lotus, but for an I6 engined car, it is light), the body seems not to twist at all, no matter how hard you drive.

The exhaust note and induction noise is lost due to the turbo charging, so for me comes across as sounding nasal or dreary. This is why pretty much all of the new BMW models have some or other form of active exhaust or sound in the cabin to “enhance” the perceived engine noise. With that said, I love that what I hear from my N52 is 100% real and not fake, or tricked into sounding more than it is...
