ARS22 Artist Interview - Pia Camil

Lahjan ja vastalahjan idea sekä kaupankäynti ilman rahaa kiinnostavat Pia Camilia. Camillin A Pot for A Latch (2016/2022) teos muistuttaa muodoltaan kauppiaiden myyntitelineitä Mexico Cityn kaduilla ja toreilla. Taiteilija näkee teoksen metallisessa ruudukossa myös yhtäläisyyksiä minimalistiseen maalaus ja veistotaiteeseen.
Teoksellaan Camil kutsuu kaikki mukaan vaihtokauppaan, jossa valuuttana toimivat esineet ja niiden tarinat. Metalliristikkoon ripustetut tavarat ovat yleisön tuomia, ja ne vaihtuvat ARS22 -näyttelyn aikana. Museossa esillä oleviin kansioihin on koottu osallistujien antamia tietoja esineistä ja niiden merkityksistä.

Pia Camil is interested in the concepts of gifts and return gifts, as well as trade without money. In form, A Pot for A Latch (2016/2022) resembles street vendors’ stands in the streets and squares of Mexico City. On the other hand, the artist sees resemblances between the metal grid and minimalist painting and sculpture.
With the work, Camil invites everyone to participate in an exchange, in which objects and their stories are the currency. Objects hanging on the metal grid have been brought by audience members, and they change over the course of the ARS22 exhibition.
