ARS22 Artist Interview - Frida Orupabo

Frida Orupabo käyttää teoksissaan löydettyjä valokuvia. Hän etsii niitä erilaisista arkistoista ja muista lähteistä. Kuvista hän tekee veistoksia, kollaaseja ja videoita.
Orupabo on kiinnostunut historiallisista mustien ja ruskeiden ihmisten kuvista. Kuvissa tärkeää on henkilökohtainen katse. Tyypillisesti arkistoissa ei ole kuvan lisäksi juurikaan tietoa henkilöiden elämästä. Orupabo haluaa tehdä näkyväksi, että arkistoihin tallennettu historia ei ole neutraalia vaan toistaa oman aikansa yhteiskunnan arvoja.
Orupabon teokset Two Sides To Every Coin (2021), Mother and Child (2021), Turning (2021) sekä kolme nimetöntä teosta (2018,2021) ovat esillä ARS22 -suurnäyttelyssä Kiasmassa.

Frida Orupabo uses found photographs for her pieces. She searches for them in various archives as well as other platforms, and uses the photos to make sculptures, collages and videos.
Orupabo is interested in historical images of Black and Brown people, in which the person's gaze is of importance. Typically, archives have little or no information about the people's lives, apart from the photography. Orupabo wants to make visible the fact that history stored in archives is not neutral, but rather repeats the values of the society of its time.
Orupabo's works Two Sides To Every Coin (2021), Mother and Child (2021), Turning (2021) and three untitled pieces (2018,2021) are on display at the ARS22 exhibition at Kiasma.
