- Watch from the Freehand outline to finished Graphite portrait... surface used on Strathmore Bristol smooth paper. In this tutorial I share with you my tips and technique I have used over the 40 plus years of drawing and painting.
Easy to follow stages with loads of pointers which guides you through my easy to follow method. Even if you specialise in colour work, continuing to draw in graphite really does help us to see the values much easier.

Here’s a tip. Edit the source photo to black and white if you’re sketching in black and white. Makes it easier to reference the shade
Thanks for the comment... I have seen that done many times... much prefer to work from colour... its good practice for when I'm working from a life model or nature like landscapes.

Dave do you use any blending tools with your graphite drawings.
Hi, I usually use pencil over pencils to blend... but I am experimenting with blenders at the moment... if I like using them I will post the results. Thanks for watching 🙏

Guess a lot of magical thinking goes into your drawing. I tried looking at my reference photo for more EMOTION in My Drawing and nothing happened. Mine did not look any different. I wonder why.
Hi Nancy, it is a very natural ability we all possess... it is worth the perseverance, it is a matter of imaging that you are looking from your heart not your mind. You will feel an expansion, an opening of the senses. It is achieved by sensing not thinking. Hope that gives you some pointers. Wishing all the very best 😊🙏
