Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I usually use: numbers... Check out this Amazon uk and US links (below) where you can buy just single pastel pencils.
Primary colours...
Reds... 788-060, 080
Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
Blue... 788- 145
Orange 788-052
Purple 788-099
Green 788-719
Rich colours I sometime use for the bright areas in the skin tones...
788- 541, 542, 871, 581. and the vivid ones I used for this portrait are 788-582, 571
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

Dave, I've seen a lot of videos of artists, but they don't mention how important peace and feeling is when making a painting. Thank you for mentioning it, that is the basis of the passion that we must apply to our actions. Thanks.
Hi Roberto. Thanks for your comment. This awareness is at the very core of my art... without it I really would not be able to draw and paint. All the very best 💕🙏
This is the first time I watched your video and found it so Interesting and a huge help. You're a very patient man.

I hv always loved working with soft pastels and the tips on here I will certainly try once my hand has healed from the surgery I had 2 weeks ago. I'm so glad these videos are on here to help me when I'm physically unable to do any artwork. I hv another 12 weeks to go before I can do anything. Sending luv n light x
Pastel are a wonderful medium to work with... wishing you a speedy recovery.... thank you so much for you kind words. Appreciate you watching my videos. All the very best Shannara ... love and light to you too. 🙏
You are brilliant. I could watch you for hours. I've only ever done human portraiture in graphite and charcoal, but I've been drawing pet and wildlife art in soft pastels for around 4 years. I'm surprising a special somebody with a pastel portrait of their son, already feeling the strain, stumbled across your channel. Sat here watching and learning so I can brave his skin tomorrow. The hair came naturally to me lol, the skin is filling me with fear. It's got to be just right because this person means the world to me and her son tragically passed at the age of 17 to a form of stroke that happens when a blood vessel in the neck ruptures. Thank you so much for being so generous with your experience and knowledge.
Hi Gemma... thank you so much for watching.... means the world to me. So thrilled that you have found the pointers useful and that they give you the confidence to create skin tones. @@DavePortersArt you are very much welcome my friend Dave.
Amazing work and Great techniques. Thank you Dave. Do you use fixatives? Can you please explain how you protect these portraits?
Thank you so much... the surface I use enables you to not spray to protect the painting. Another reason why I don't fix my work is that it dulls all the subtitles and details. Pastelmat surface is sanded and the pigment sticks to it so less dust. I store my work wrapped in a special paper called glassing paper, which is waterproof and prevents your work smudging. If I frame the work I cut a mount and put under glass... all the very best 🙏🙏
Just discovered your channel. I like your artwork, but could you provide more detailed information on how you create the skin tone?
Hi David, thrilled you like my work. I have loads of videos focusing on skin tone... but here is one that show my technique in real-time... here is the link... czcams.com/video/7YGvMZ-N0jw/video.html Thanks for watching. 🙏
Dave, this is Chris from France, thank you so much for thanking personnally all your followers by a kind message,, may I kindly ask you what is this grey paper you use in your demos of skin tones?
Hi Christian... my pleasure... the paper I'm using is clairfontain Pastelmat dark grey... it is magic to work on. 😊🙏
In spanish simply.
Your work is amazing 😍have you got any recommendations for alternative pastel pencils on a budget? Thanks
Hi there, thank you so much.... a Set of Conté à Paris pencils are really great value and the lightfastness is excellence . You could just buy the black and white of the Caren d'Ache and CarbOthello range and a Rembrandt white stick and they would put you in good stead. The most important thing is to invest in the Pastelmat surface as it is magic to work on and is the foundation to my technique. 💕🙏
I love the skin tones. What paper did you used?
Thank you... Pastelmat
What is the best fixer for pastel?
Thank you again Dave for your generous tuition . Ihave looked at your Patreon page . Will all the videos listed be available on the 1st tier or do you have several tiers at higher price. I’ve tried pastel pencils before but would like to do portraits. I have Cretacolour pencils and 24 Pitt pastel pencils will they be ok ? must watch the pennies ! I am 88 yrs old so must get a shift on . Joan
You are welcome Fredricka... there is only one tier. So everything you see you will have access for only £4 a month. You can cancel at any time... there is no contract. 😊 You could try what you have... see what happens. 😊🙏
Very useful video. Thank you so much! I have one question do you use any pastel fixatives to protect the artwork from smudging?
Thank you... that is the great thing about Pastelmat you don't need to fix the painting. I have found in the past that fixing your work will dull the colours and the subtleties 🙏
@@DavePortersArt thanks for your reply. I was worrying that how to ship it to my customers what if they smudged accidentally.
@@hepzibahportraits5286 I wrap mine in Glassine paper and sandwhich them with board. 🙏
@@DavePortersArt I'll use glassine paper for packing. Thanks again 🙏 you're so kind!! God bless
May I ask what is referred to as "glazing" over the top? Is it just a thin layer of color over the white dots? Thank you. Very instructional video!
Yes, exactly what you mentioned Arthur. Pastelmat board surface is great for they type of method as the white or lighter colour grabs the surface and does move when you very lightly add a dusting of pigment on the top. The lightest of pressure is needed to achieve this and just keep building layer after layer for all the subtleties.😊🙏
You're an amazing artist, but at the same time very frustrating artist. I hope at least next life to reach half your level of skills 😂❤
Thank you so much... art can be frustrating for sure... the key thing that has helped me so much along the way is to have no expectations and just be totally in the moment focused in my heart. It is a wonderful feeling where the creativity just happens. Thank you for watching and wish you all the success. 🥰🙏
Hi do you do eyes as well
I have a couple of videos in my channel pastel painting eyes 🙏
Please upload colour pencil drawing tutorial
Seriously considering this and also a combo of oil pastels and coloured pencils too. Loads to share with you all so I'm excited for future videos.

Dave, would you kindly write the name from the make of the pencils please. I've searched the name that you mention but couldn't find it. "Carbofello"?
Hi... it is CarbOthello... if you check the description you will find all the brand names and popular numbers I use. All the very best 🙏
Dave, could you list the 6 Caran D'Ache pastel pencils you show at time length 2:56 . Thanks

What is the best paper for Pastel pencils Arts ???
Paper or surface used is very subjective... I prefer Pastelmat as there is no dust and I can add several layers to achieve the look I'm searching for. 😊🙏
I would like to know when you’re rubbing the colours. Each layer or each colour at first.
Mainly, I use pencil over pencil to blend colours 🙏🙏
@@DavePortersArt I’ve rewatched your videos so many times. Absolutely brilliant and I realised you were blending with the pencil. My pastel drawings are coming along so much better from rewatching you me videos. You’re a legend
@@kmtkmt215 that is really great to know the videos are proving helpful... thanks for watching them so many times🙂... means the world to me. All the very best with your artwork 💕🙏
What is the brand of pastel pencils? I couldn’t find that information.
Hi Rose... all the information is in the description below the video, thanks for watching. 🙏🙏
I have only soft pastel block
So... can I get this result with soft pastel block...?
My advice is just to have a go... I have in the past used a lot pastel sticks... but to get the small details in you really need a few pastel Pencils as well as the sticks/blocks. 🙏
Could I use these techniques with oil pastels?
Hi Rebeka, the way I mix colour would work with any medium. 🙏
@@DavePortersArt thank you :)
You say Yellow Ochre is carbothello 685 but that is actually Sienna. The only yellow ochre in name I was able to find is actually Light Yellow Ochre by 1122-183 by Faber Castell Pitt (which you do not list here). What yellow ochre are you referring to here?
Also, Derwent pastel pencils is the only brand that I found which
has a color actually named Yellow Ochre.
Hi Pat... I am aware of that it has a name of sienna, but it looks more like the yellow ochre colour I like to use. It is the look of the colour I go for. Look out for my next video it will be out soon, I give you three different variations to the same study, CarbOthello v Pitt pencils v Caran d'Ache. I don't look at what they state the name of the pencils are I just pic a colour that is close to the look I need. You will see the results are very much the same. 🙏🙏
@@DavePortersArt Sorry Dave. Just trying to learn. On your Patreon, you list a Caran D'Ache as Flesh 042 but they told me it's called Desert Rose. I did not have that color in my ordering because it's listed on Patreon but I did not see it here. I do have full set of Pitt Pastels (which I love) but to CD yet (only ordered ones you listed here) and awaiting full sets on others (although I have all colors you listed here bought individually). Can you please tell me which Pitt Pastel pencil color matches the CD you call Flesh 042 on Patreon?
Im thinking Dark Naples Ochre 1122-184
@@patdarlington3297 Hi Pat... no problems I'm always here for guidance if needed. I only use these flesh tones for a short cut. They can be mixed all they are is yellow ochre with a little wram red in different proportions. The pencil you mentioned the pitt 184 would work, just add a little more warm red to it. Look out for my next CZcams video be on abiut 9 hours time... where you see me using each brand separately on there own to create the same study... so you will see me creating skin tone solely using the pitt pastels. All the best 🙏🙏
what pàper is that?, and....as a beginer, with that paper should i start praticing?
Pastelmat dark grey board... it come in paper/card version too.🙏 I would recommend practicing on it too. It is expensive but there is nothing like it... it magic to work on.
Are pastels colored pencils?
Pastels are chalky where coloured pencils are waxy. I like pastels as I am working towards becoming loose in my method/technique.
Thanks for your great tutorials, they are very helpful. I have subscribed and look forward to more great content.
d'Ache is pronounced like the word "dash", you don't pronounce the 'd' seperately.
Cheers for the great feedback Paul... appreciate the heads up with the pronunciation of the pencil name... much appreciated 🙏☺
@@DavePortersArt No problem Dave, I wasn't trying to be smart or anything. Just thought it would be more professional if you were pronouncing it correctly.
I really like your pastel content, especially the skin tone videos.
Keep up the great work and best of luck with your channel.
I am a member of some groups on Facebook and sometimes people ask for recommendations for pastel videos. Is it Ok with you if I mention your channel?
@@Monkeybonkers2008 It never crossed my mind that you was trying to be smart... I totally agree it will sound more professional pronouncing the name correctly... so I really appreciate the input.
Please reccommend my channel..
that would be awesome... cheers 🙏🙏
Uds es fabuloso , pero me encantaría que pudiera hablar en castellano para entenderlo mejor
Ojalá supiera muchos idiomas. Gracias por gustarme mi trabajo 😊🙏
So many questions. Why so many layers. Put down ,cover up ,put down ,cover up,etc, etc, etc
It is to create the texture... also layer after layer it creates the chroma or glow I'm looking to achieve. 🙏
How the hell you follow that I’ll never know.
You are very kind 🙏
Mbbv
I think pastel painting fundamentals has been taught wrong historically or completely miss a important beginning lessons.
What I am sharing is an adapted technique that I use for Oil Painting. I like to keep the colours down to small amount... rather than having a vast amount of different colour tones and hues. I love mixing primary and secondary colours to achieve subtle harmonies. 🙏
@@DavePortersArt my comment has nothing to do with you and your art. It's a realization . It's about a faulty non-moral or patronizing didactic.
What is the best fixer for pastel?
I don't tend to use fixative as it dulls the subtleties and details. Pastel matt is the answer as the pigment clings to the surface and doesn't crate all that dust. 🙏🙏
