Sony BVM-HX310: The First LCD I've Reviewed That Can Rival OLED!

  • We review Sony's new BVM-HX310 professional mastering monitor, which is the replacement for the Japanese brand's now-discontinued X300 reference OLED monitor.
    We found the Sony HX310 to be the first LCD display we've tested that can compete with OLED on picture quality, thanks to dual-layer LCD or light-modulating cell layer (LMCL) technology. List price is at least £30,000.
    We understand that the Hisense U9 and the upcoming Apple Pro Display XDR 6K monitor will also be using dual-layer LCD technology, although not the exact same one found on the BVM-HX310.
    Footages at 2:15 and 2:52 are blurry due to wide lens aperture used to capture dark detail.

    • @C--A
      @C--A Před 4 lety +8

      Nits level is the downfall of dual layer LCD. It only gets a peak nits brightness of 1000 nits, lot's of 4k blu ray discs are mastered at 4000 nits and some even 10,000 nits. Even though these extreme bright scenes usually only last a few seconds at a time the higher the nits the more immersive to the viewer.
      For the least blooming in a LCD the Sony mastering monitor is the best. But the low nits level is a major negative. MicroLed is the future - Black's as good as OLED no burn in and nits levels 4000+, zero blooming. But will 5 or more year's until they are available to buy at prices like the current flagship LCD and OLED tv's.

      Nice to hear. Still waiting to pull the trigger myself (not in a humongous hurry, have a B7 already), they have promised to include HDMI 2.1 support via firmware update once devices capable of outputting that come available, but I've been burned before, and want to see them actually follow up on it. So first HDMI 2.1 GPUs need to come out, then they need to actually update the C9 to HDMI 2.1. =)

    • @jubuttib
      @jubuttib Před 4 lety +2

      @Freeze Peach/videos/videos I've been using an LG B7 for a bit over two years now as my primary monitor (flanked by smaller IPS displays for productivity reasons), and on the whole it has been stellar. I would definitely give my personal recommendation to OLEDs for gaming purposes. The input lag is great (though not top tier, 9-series has effectively solved this), the pixel response times are better than any other display technology, the viewing angles are superb (which makes a difference when you have a big TV close up for high FOV gaming, especially racing games and flying sims), and of course the perfect blacks can't at the moment be matched by anything. The only things that I'd want to improve would be even lower input lag, and support for 4K @ 120 Hz (it supports 1080p @ 120 Hz, which is tasty smooth, but not really high res). LG's 9-series TVs have already brought the input lag down, and at least their tech support claims that they will be updating them to support 4K@120Hz via HDMI 2.1 once GPUs that use it come out to market.
      I have also tried other stuff in the meanwhile, but nothing could remotely compare in the "I want a really big screen to game on" space. The top of the line Samsung QLEDs came the closest (and allowed 4K@120Hz via 4:2:0 chroma subsampling), but:
      -The viewing angles are garbage by comparison, heavy vignetting on all sides, unusable on desktop, gaming was so-so.
      -The local dimming just isn't up to snuff. The areas are too big, creating very noticeable blooming or loss of bright highlights (depending on setting), the black levels are horrid in the areas with the backlight on, and it can't manage to keep the brightness of specific areas constant, even when they're supposed to be, instead pumping their brightness either up or down with the rest of the screen, depending on settings.
      I will admit though that sofa distance media consumption and gaming worked quite nicely, and the high peak brightness of the HDR was nice, but I'd still take the inky blacks and higher contrast of OLEDs any day. And the OLEDs are cheaper too.
      If you're looking for something smaller than 40 inches, then go ahead and get something else, but if you want BIG screen gaming, at the moment at least I know of nothing that can compare to OLED. The only thing they do worse is peak brightness, everything else has been in my experience superior.
      Honestly, I don't expect miniLED to come soon enough to really start worrying about at this point. The dual layer LCDs though seem like a really good way to go economically (basically existing tech) and the capabilities are great.

    Can you shed light on the screentearing and artifacts? I don't get any of these issues on my monitorat home

Not sure if you’re still a frequent viewer of the channel, but I’d recommend checking out the video containing a group of industry professionals comparing and voting on the best overall TV of 2022. You’d be happy to see QD-OLED is indeed the winner. Not to mention, Sony was behind it as well.

      @@Jake_34 QD-OLED are yet another different type of implementation of Quantum Dots.
      In my previous comment I was referring to self emitting Quantum Dots, as opposed to QD-OLED, in which the light is emitted by OLED elements - blue light, specifically - and then converted into the other two primaries by QD elements. Instead, self emitting Quantum Dots do not need an external source of light. When excited with electricity, each QD element emits light in a specific wavelength. It's an inorganic equivalent of an OLED display, to put it very simply. There's been some prototype shown at various conferences and it sounds very promising, if they can scale the production and reach sufficient brightness for HDR implementations.

    At 10:45 you mention the chroma bandwith pattern from the Spears and Munsil test disc. Is it really a good idea to test chroma subsampling with a native 4:2:0 source ? All you get from a player is upsampled chroma and I don't know think it's the best idea to test chroma handling based on this. A native 4:4:4 chroma test pattern would make more sense. The BVM OLEDs so far had no problems displaying full 4:4:4 chroma resolution, so I guess the HX310 won't be any different in this regard.

    News sources, such as MSNBC, CNN and CNBC, continue to be hazardous to OLED as well as video gamers. I just wish that the US FCC would initiate a program to require that provider of graphic generator hardware, like Chyron in particular, be required to certify that their products can be used in a manner that will not cause pattern burn. The FCC has the obligation to protect owners of receiving equipment from signal material that has potential for wreaking severe damage to video display!

      Louis Carliner or the fcc should outlaw permanent logos. and force these companies to cycle them on and off. I mean these annoying channel logos is fairly new. Like in the last decade. Before that channels didn’t have onscreen logos at all.

      Michelle Alexandria I also would like a requirement that stations or channels using Id watermarking be required to continue to use the on commercial breaks. This be be a much appreciated convenience for travelers staying at hotels attempting to find their favorite channels when decent channel guides or listings are not available. It also could be useful for those being paid to verify carriage of commercials that they are being billed for to the company or agency responsible for the commercial.

    • @mikemckee6583
      @mikemckee6583 Před 5 lety +4

      When you have to ask content creators to change their content to prevent damaging your TV, your TV is based upon technology that is not viable. The burn-in problem and the lack of brightness are precisely why I went with a Sony X930E instead of an OLED. OLED is great for what it’s best at, but it’s lack of brightness is a major drawback that seriously restricts it’s HDR impact. If you want that “looking through a picture window” effect, the only technology that can deliver it is a high-nit LCD.
      And burn-in is just unacceptable, period. I had one of the early CRT-based Mitsubishi HD TVs, and managing burn-in became like a second job. It was not fun, and despite my best efforts all of the channel logos and tickers eventually took their toll anyway; it was unavoidable. No modern display technology should require its owner to baby it to avoid damage, simply from watching the “wrong” programming. OLED TVs are essentially very expensive disposable items, because they simply won’t last.

    • @lcarliner
      @lcarliner Před 5 lety +1

      Even past generation LCD screens could be subject to pattern burn, but much later in the life cycle but at far less intensity than CRT based projection models. It unfortunate that some cable channels can be a threat to past and present technologies, like plasma, CRT, and OLED.
