  • Smoke effects, or dust, are some great fx for a beginner animator who is interested in traditional animation.
    I go over single poofs and a smoke cycle and talk a little about drawing style, and different ways to dissipate dust.
    Hopefully this is a good launch pad for your own fx :D If you do any please share!

    I love how much you cover in a short time, running sort of stream-of-consciousness, and not assuming you need to explain every single brushstroke. It makes for a much more informative and enjoyable video than most of the ones I’ve seen. Especially enjoyed the smoke/fire bit; got to learn how to possibly do both at once! Thanks!

    Great video, really well explained. Would love to hear how you approach cycling something like a stream, ribbon of smoke, tattered fire traditionally. How you would approach either animating back into the first frame or if you have another particular technique.

    Omg this is awesome :O what kinds of other environmental effects can you do? I struggle with wind and spreading fire.

    • @StylusRumble
      @StylusRumble  Před 5 lety

      I do whatever the studio needs lol. Wind can be really tricky to balance visibility with some kind of good style. I've had clients revise a hairdryer 4-5 times because it didn't "Feel right". Avatar has some amazing air-effects (airbender, not the blue guys lol). Sand is the worst, because it's kind of fluid, but also solid, and made of lots of tiny pieces and dust. Lots of layers.
      Fire I just wing it. Make sure everything keeps moving up, and do some studies of fires, real and cartoons to get a feel for the shapes. Pinterest is your friend!

    • @StylusRumble
      @StylusRumble  Před 5 lety +1

      I have a few that are in that ball park. For hot keys I have very few custom ones. That way as I studio hop or upgrade I don't need to change very much. I only add hotkeys to things I do regularly that don't have one already.
      Efficient studio animation - Things that help thrive in a studio setting.
      Character animation: Blocking has my initial set up for character animation, working top-down.
      Fx cycles. Bubbles. - I break down my fx cycle method, similar to this video, but more to the point.
      Harmony Rigging: Fairy part 0 - streamlining my rigging work flow. Lots of tips about using templates, and working smart.
      I don't plan anything out so my channel is like a bargain bin - just dig through and you'll find something lol.

    • @StylusRumble

      Sure - if character animation is done on 2's, the fx animation can be done on 2's. Often if you mix single frame animations with stuff held on 2's 3's whatever, it will look really staggered and weird.
      One of the tricky things about fx animation is making sure our timing jives with the characters :)
      if the whole idea of 1s, 2s, 3s is confusing, RubberOnion has a great video about it :D
