  • Once upon a time, Rex & Weevil were among the best players in the world - With skills and strategy that gave them the opportunity to participate in some of the most prestigious tournaments in Duel Monsters history.
But because of the game’s ever-evolving nature, Rex & Weevil went from being champions to just flies on the wall, as an antagonistic but comedic duo, who saw their chances of winning go extinct before their eyes as they were crushed like bugs and got Tyrannosaurus Wrecked, which caused them to try and rise to the top once more using some less than savory tactics.
So today we’re going to look at Rex & And Weevil’s 10 most important cards, how they helped them climb the spout to the top of Duel Monsters, and how they helped turn them both into the Dino-Sore losers they are today.

Funny thing about King Rex. It's actually halfway decent in Yu-Gi-Oh the Falsebound Kingdom. It doesn't hit particularly hard, but it's an absolute unit that develops a healing factor at a higher level, and due to the fact that you can't use more than one copy of any given monster, it's what provides the two heads for Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon, which is actually pretty good itself, though Thunder Dragon isn't likely to survive long enough to fuse

Honestly kinda shocked that Black Tyranno didn't make any sort of appearance. While Rex only used it briefly, Black Tyranno is very much a progenitor for the bright future that dino decks would have. As various "Tyranno" monsters would evolve steadily higher stats and more substantial effects until it produced the ultimate Apex Predator of any Dinosaur Deck; Ultimate Conductor Tyranno. And Black Tyranno was the one who started it all.

Ok, looking by at how Rex had more Dragon monsters here than Dinosaur monsters, I’m wanting to make an “Evolution” spell that can make that work for a Dinosaur Deck:
    _Temporal Evolution Pill_
    Quickplay Spell
_Tribute 1 Dinosaur monster you control: Apply 1 of the following effects:_
⚪️Special Summon 1 Winged-Beast, Wyrm or Dragon monster from your hand or deck who’s Total ATK/DEF is equal to or less than the tribute’s.
⚪️Special Summon 1 Reptile, Sea-Serpent, Fish or Aqua monster from your hand or deck whose total ATK/DEF is equal to or less than the tributes.
Basically the idea is to tap into some real facts surrounding dinosaurs, and have one either “devolve” into a kind of life form that preceded it (The second efffect) or succeeded it (Winged-Beasts, AKA Birds, or Wyrms and Dragons, whom owe their existence as myths in part due to how older peoples interpreted any Dinosaur bones they found).

12:15 This one gives me an idea for a boss monster for a new hypothetical “Colony” archetype:
    _Colony Queen_ (EARTH)
    Level 7
    Insect/Effect
_You can normal summon this card without tributes if you control a face-up “Colony” Field Spell. While this card is face-up on the field, if you summon a Level 4 or lower insect monster: You can special summon any number of monsters with the same name as it from your hand. Your opponent cannot target this card for attacks or card effects while you control another face-up insect monster. You can tribute 1 card from your hand or field (Quick Effect): Increase this card’s ATK/DEF by 500, then Apply 1 of the following effects (Each of the following Effects of “Colony Queen” can only be applied once per turn):_
⚪️Insect monsters you control can attack an additional time per battle phase this turn.
    ⚪️Special Summon any number of “Colony Tokens” (Insect/Tuner/EARTH/Level 1/ATK 100/DEF 100).
⚪️Add 1 Spell/Trap to your hand from your deck that mentions “Insect” in it’s or effects.
    ATK/2200 DEF/2400

Perfectly Ultimate always deserved a proper retrain (besides those kinda-sorta ones like “Ultimate Great Insect”):
    _Perfected Great Moth_ (EARTH)
    Level 8
    Pendulum Scales: 7⬅️➡️7
_Each turn, 1 Level 5 or higher Insect monster you Normal Summon can be Summoned without Tributing, and if you do, you can increase or decrease this card’s pendulum scales by up to it’s level. While this card is face-up in your pendulum zone, you can conduct an additional normal summon/set of an insect monster per turn, not just 1. If any number of Insect monsters you control would be destroyed by battle or an opponent’s card or effect: You can tribute 1 card from your hand or field instead._
    Insect/Pendulum/Effect
_Cannot be normal Summoned/Set. Must be special summoned by its own effect. You can tribute 3 insect monsters you control (Quick Effect): Special Summon this card from your hand, Pendulum Zones, or your extra deck (Face-up). Cannot be destroyed by battle, and unaffected by other card’s effects, while you control a face-up Level/Rank/Link 7 or lower Insect monster. Once per turn (Quick Effect), you can special summon any number of “Ultimate Moth Tokens” (Insect/Tuner/EARTH/Level 1/ ATK/350 DEF/300)._
    ATK/3500 DEF/3000
So basically you need 3 insect monsters to special summon it, and its pendulum effects can help set up those conditions. Meanwhile while it IS on the field, it’s borderline indestructible so long as you control a lesser insect monster (which it can summon en-masse once per turn via it’s own built in Scapeghost)

I play Beetrooper/BattleWasp on Master Duel after that Event ages ago that made me fall in love with Beetroopers (the Battlewasps were added later on to give them more offensive options, plus Synchros and, not least of all, Underground Arachnid), I generally use Resonance Insect to search out either Battra or Sting Lancer and I didn't know about that Inzektro Link, I'm going to have to look into it! And the way the Deck was set up in that Event, it did indeed use the Goki pair the way you mentioned, then going off into Link Climbing!
And it's funny, you badmouth Red-Eyes, yet, Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth is the reason why Meteor Black Dragon is one of the best cards and certainly best and strongest Prize Card in Forgbidden Memories! The way that game worked meant that Meteor Black Dragon would always have an advantage over the overgrown Mothra wannabe! Especially with my deck, running 3 Meteor Black Dragon, 3 Meteor Dragon and 3 Red-Eyes Black Dragon! If I can't get at least one Meteor Black Dragon by my 5th Turn, I'd Bricked, no two ways about it!
And Monarchs and Kaiju can also take advantage of the Seal of Orichalchum, as they don't need the Extra Deck, either, although, they do both have their own Field Spells, which you could argue are better anyway... But, I did have one Duel on Master Duel with my Kaiju Deck, where the Seal would have given me an OTK! My opponent finished with four Monsters on the Field, I had Ghidorah, Ra Sphere Mode and Owner's Seal in hand, along with Kyoto Waterfront - the card which, upon play, made him quit!

Two headed king rex saw some success at the beggining of Duel Links. Monsters above 1700 atk were non existent, and combined with Rex's skill to begin with Dinosaur Kingdom, king rex and its counterpart Crawling Dragon were 1900 atk. Plus if you got Polymerization you could fuse them into a 2500 atk monster. The first few months of Duel Links was truly caveman YuGiOh

The funny anout Rex and Weevil is in some of the video games they aren't half bad duelists because they have a ton of support cards to help boost their cards. Rex has several magic cards to boost his dinosaur monsters over 2000 or just under it which would give even the best level four monsters trouble. Weevil was the same with either having bugs with defense points and could lure you into attacking them only to see their boosted defense is higher then you attack along with being able to summon his higher level bugs more easily making him a real threat.

One of my favorite things about the seal of orichalcos is with the card "How did Dai get here?" There's also a fusion that can do this, but i forgot the name. Anyway, how did dai get here can place a field spell from the deck to the field. And because "Place" isn't treated as "activate", you can SS from the ED first, then when how did dai get here is activated, you can place the seal on your field, and since it was placed, all SS monsters you control will be safe from it's effect. ....You are still locked out of the ED though.

15:15 I can retrain this card to make it MUCH better for bringing out Insect boss monsters:
    _Cocoon of Infinite Evolution_
    Level 1
    Insect/Union/Tuner/Effect
_Once per turn, you can either: Target 1 face-up Insect monster you control; equip this card (from your hand or field) to that target, OR: Unequip this card and Special Summon it. If the equipped monster would be destroyed by battle or card effect, tribute this card instead. Cannot be destroyed while it is equipped to another card by its own effects. The equipped monster gains 2000 DEF, and cannot be destroyed while in defense position. During the beginning of each phase, increase the equipped monster’s level/rank by 1. Once per turn (quick effect), you can tribute the equipped monster: Special Summon 1 insect monster from your hand or deck who’s level is less than or equal to the level/rank the equipped monster had while it was on the field, ignoring it’s summoning conditions._
    ATK/0 DEF/2000
So basically, it “Cocoon’s” the equipped monster, and bolsters its survivability greatly while it fattens it up to summon whatever insect monster is ready for it. And making it stack up at the start of each phase keeps the time related aspect, but makes it WAY faster than the original cards turns of waiting.
21:22 and THEN I can make a better version of THIS card:
    _Species Barrier_
    Continuous Spell
_During the beginning of each players turn, declare 1 monster type: For the rest of the turn, monsters of that declared type your opponent controls cannot declare an attack or target cards you control for their effects._
    And THEN for 8:13
    _Advanced Insect_ (EARTH)
    Level 2
    Insect/Tuner/Effect
_This card’s name is also treated as “Basic Insect” while face-up in the field or in the GY. If you control a face-up “Forest” card or “Basic Insect” (Quick Effect): You can special summon this card from your hand. This card can be treated as a non/tuner for your summon of a monster. Insect monsters you control can make an additional attack per battle phase for every insect monster you control, and if they attack a defense position monster: Inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent._
    ATK/500 DEF/700
THERE, I played into its card text, leaning in on the “Forest” and “Swarm” parts.

For Infinite Evolution, I would add a couple things. First, its Union effect can be used from the hand. Second, the monster to summon has a level equal to or lower than the equipped monster. Lastly, because Equips/Union cards are so weak, "This card cannot be destroyed while it is equipped to a monster by its own effect."

Sad after looking into a bug deck I feel insects are in a strange spot right now where dinos used to be. Where they have some good cards but are missing the right support to push them forward. Like ultimate conductor did for dinos. But as for the dragon mixed strategy I get the analogy cause if you think about it dinos where probably actually called dragons back in the olden days and where the last remnants of dinos that existed that got wiped out from being hunted or captured.

Weevil deserves more credit. He actually uses a distinct strategy in every duel he’s in. He actually plays well against Atem in Waking the Dragons without cheating. He would have even won had Atem not gotten lucky with Berserker Soul or if he waited to activate his burn card. It wasn’t even really a misplay. You could argue Seal of Orichalcos was OP but Berserker Soul felt cheap too especially since we never see that card before or after this duel.
