    Hey so with the advice about AP credits, what if you have enough credits that you could graduate a year early to save money? Should I just take the credit (I have around 60 credits) so I don’t have to take out loans for another year? Or should I just retake the classes for the gpa boost? Thanks for the tips 💞

    • @Naruto-bp6hm
      @Naruto-bp6hm Před 4 lety +1

      Do you intend to pursue a masters? Or some other competitive program afterwards? If yes, there's some things to take into consideration. You do need a good GPA. However, if you're REALLY focused, you can still earn a high enough GPA with just the limited classes you have to take and you won't need the booster classes to maintain your GPA.
      If no, and you just want to graduate ASAP and save money, then yes go for it. But if I were you, I'd still keep my GPA somewhat decent in case I change my mind somewhere down the road. That way, if you decide you need to go back, it won't be as hard to get it back up. That's what happened to me. I didn't think I'd do a master's, but plans changed and now I want to pursue one. Life shit just happens sometimes and I had to adjust for it. But it's your life and not mine so you know better what to do with it.
      Tl;dr: if you just wanna get your bachelors ASAP and don't plan on going back to school then use your credits

    For the IB/AP thing: In my situation would normally use those transfer credits so that I would have less classes to take, either to lessen the workload or to graduate ASAP. I was an IB student but I did horribly so I got like 1 course exempt, and if I did better I wouldn't have to take any electives and I could've graduated by now and moved on with my life instead of being stuck in uni for far too long :/ But yeah everyone is different. If you need that GPA booster because there's a program you really need to get into then go for it.

    question: if you don't get out of your intro classes with ap credit, won't that be a waste of credit?

    • @AngelicaSong
      @AngelicaSong  Před 4 lety +1

      sure, but you dont HAVE to use the credit. those intro classes are a GPA boost, and often times skipping the intro class and going into the next level class is really hard because college content that you skipped is slightly different (harder) than high school content. And you should still graduate on time. AP Credit usually is a good indicator for schools to see how well you can do during college application. There's no YOU MUST USE the ap credit!

    Hey Angelica, I'm currently weighing out my college options and am highly considering Cal. The only thing is that I am at a great financial disadvantage-- even with grants and scholarships (which I may not even get), I'll end up in debt. I'm drawn to the people there and the culture even though it would be so much cheaper to go elsewhere. I can save money since I was dually enrolled in CC and am getting the IGETC, CSU Certification, AA in Liberal Studies: Teaching Prep, Arts and Humanities, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. What would be your advice to me because I didn't do that to skip out of classes you know but you also said that GPA doesn't matter? It's such a hard choice especially now. Cal says housing is still being offered till the Fall but they are not saying if school will be online or what it would entail for people like me.
    I ask the ambassadors and faculty at virtual cal week but they either deflect the question or just tell me what I want to hear. I would appreciate any insight, thanks for all your advice!

    Mostly good advice, except for GPA.
    As a professional, who has reviewed new hires, I can tell you a GPA matters a lot for your first job and to get into grad school. If you don't have a good GPA, you will have a hard time getting into the grad school of your choice.
    GPA matters to get in the door for your first interviews. From the interviewers point of view,, for 4 years all you have to do was study, if you could not do that right, what were you doing? So if you don't have a good GPA make sure you have a reason. A GPA is also an indicator of whether you are a responsible person, whether you can be trusted to get your job done, whether you have an interest to learn and grow etc.
    One more thing, your second job will be built on your first job and so on. So if you start with a lower job or lower pay it immediately puts you at a disadvantage. Take also into account, assume you have a bad GPA, but did not pull off a stellar interview, but some how got hired, remember your team members are fully aware of your resume, and how you did your interview. So guess what, they are not going to take you as seriously at the beginning.
    All this means is, you will have to work way harder to get attention, and climb the career ladder. Remember, people can show anecdotal evidence of people who had lousy GPAs but did amazing in their professional careers. If you are smart, driven, with great people skills, who has the natural ability to impress people, yeah a bad GPA will not hurt you much.
    I know too many people who took the advice GPA did not matter and struggled initially to get their careers going. GPA is not everything, most important is to learn, grow and follow your passion. But please don't ignore your GPA based on these kinds of advice.
    Also, remember you do not control what kind of job market you will be entering, so please care about your GPA.
