Much More Than An Airline: The Incredible Diversity Of The Lufthansa Group

  • When thinking of the Lufthansa Group, the first thing that comes to mind for most people is likely its core carrier, Lufthansa. Many others will also be aware that the group also includes a number of other airlines, including SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings. But this is truly just the tip of the iceberg, as the Lufthansa Group's activities have also included the modification of aircraft for VIP and government use, aircraft insurance, as well as consultation services for other airlines. Let’s look at just how big this company is, in today’s video.

It's honestly insane that two of the group's most profitable businesses, Lufthansa Industry Solutions and Lufthansa Systems, are not even airlines, but rather software and information companies which sell solutions developed for Lufthansa own operations to other airlines.
A bit like french airplane maker Dassault: they started decades ago to develop their own 3D computer aided design software or CAD to help in the design of their aircraft...nowdays the subsidiary Dassault Systems in charge of CAD software development is actually bigger and more profitable than the airplane making branch, Dassault Aviation...

Yesterday, Portuguese prime minister António Costa, while receiving the German chancellor Olaf Scholz, informed of the Lufthansa interest in TAP Air Portugal, saying they could complement each other very well, but with Air France - KLM and IAG (British Airways and Iberia) also interested, no promises can be made at the moment. TAP and ITA privatisation is something interesting to follow in the coming months

Low wages? A new union contract came into effect August 22 - Erratic product? Lufthansa just invested 2.5 Billion Euros in the cabin product overhaul - Frankfurt chaos? What chaos? Strikes? Thankfully, Germany has certain workers rights, and they may affect airports and airlines. Same as in other European countries. Most recently the public sector had strike actions scheduled. But that has nothing to do with any airlines themselves.

Swissair was dommed financially well before the SR111 crash and the crash has nothing to do with the Swissair bankrupcy and subsequent recapitalizing by swiss taxpayers and sale to LH group. I don't know wjere you got that idea but it is completely wrong. Swissair was able to sustain the cost of the crash thanks to the Chicago convention and they were insured for that. No problem at all financially due to the crash.

@@12345fowler What today is Swiss International Airlines and part of the Lufthansa Group was until 2001 Crossair, founded in 1975 as a regional airline. Swissair became bankrupt in 2001 and didn´t exist any longer. Crossair was renamed into Swiss International Airlines after two crashes (Crossair Flights 498 and 3597 in 2000 and 2001), so that the people mix it up with Swissair. Flight SR111 was a Swissair Flight in 1998. Swissair and Swiss International are two totally different Airlines. Philippe Bruggisser was from 1996 until 2001 CEO of the Swissair Group. He had nothing to do with Swiss International aka former Crossair. Crossair was owned by Moritz Suter, who selled Crossair after the Crash of Crossair Flight 3597 to some Swiss Banks, who selled parts of it in 2002 to the Government of Switzerland who selled it together in 2005 to Lufthansa. What makes it even more irritating is that Moritz Suter was in 2001 also the last CEO of Swissair and therefore the successor of Philippe Bruggisser. The IATA-Code of Swissair was SR, the IATA-Code of Crossair and Swiss International Airlines was and is LX.

Why can’t people use the word “number” when they’re talking about discrete things? Why is it always “amount”? Even 20 years ago, NOBODY said or wrote “amount of airplanes” or “amount of people.” Now, at least on CZcams, it’s invariably “amount,” just as if people or airplanes were like liquids. Frankfurt - Bangkok direct flight with Thai Airways is 850$, and Lufthansa 1300$. Otherwise, you always can make a stopover and take one middle eastern airline for 580$. Never ever there was a cheaper flight with Lufthansa available. The service isn't that great, and the planes are old. What should be a single reason to take Lufthansa?
