A $23,500 1983 Penny! Error Coin - Copper Planchet

- I mis-spoke in this video. You're not looking for a 1983 Zinc Planchet. You're looking for the 1983 copper planchet which weighs about 3.11 grams. Copper planchets weren't supposed to be minted after 1982.

@bjanks00 I just re-watched the video. What I meant is the 95% copper penny for 1983 is an error. This is substantiated by the conversation about the weight difference. I wasn’t clear in the video. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I’ll pin our conversation for clarification. Thanks @Bryan Jellick
I wish I knew which one was the right ones
@@MintMiser you say a 1983 copper plated zinc planchet is an error. That is incorrect. That is the norm. By 1983, P & D pennies should have all transitioned to the lighter (2.5g) copper plated zinc planchet. Finding a 1983, P or D on a bronze planchet(3.1g) would be rare. Both bronze and copper plated zinc 1982 P&D are common . Finding the rarer '82- D small date on bronze takes some discernment but is also rare. So get your scales and your magnifying glass.

Your "copper plated zinc cent" is NOT the error. A BRONZE planchet (copper- 95%) is the transition error. Might want to edit your narrative.
It looks like any other penny to me. What am I missing?
i dont thonk hhis guy knows What hes talkin about.surely evry1 knows 83 posta b zinc and 2.5g.
Thank you ;-)
Yeah I think he meant to say that and messed up but yes he should fix it because not all people will know and or read the comments to find out
1983 struck on a copper planchet how much
I am so grateful I saved 1985 and below..... For decades.... I've never weighed so many individual pennies in my life
Ok they transitioned to copper platted zinc planchetts that year ,thus transitioning from solid copper plachetts ,which were actually being phased out in 1982 .. that aside ... I believe you mean that instead of the 1983 LC being a compisition of zinc plancehetts covered in copper ,dont you mean that the error your attempting to explain is solid copper planchetts mint printed by mistake instead of zinc core copper covered planchetts?
Also they were getting a premium for a high grade ms67+ there are no examples Ms 70 or Ms 69 as far as I know . They only fetch around $3,000 to $4,000 and those have to be Ms 66+ and red
Only 3 or 4 grand for a 1 cent coin, huh? That's hardly worth quitting my dayjob for.
I have this coin and some others that all weigh 3 grams
I have this Lincoln 1983/ 1982
Ummmm.. I think you got it mixed up there chief.

I have one 3.1 grams whitout mint
so which on is worth money i have 10 i heard a 1982 s is worth 50,000 is this true ?
How much does it weigh?
I have one of this 1983
Most all are on copper plated zinc planchets the onesthat are errors are the ones struck on copper planchets which weigh 3.10 gr zinc planchets weigh 2.5 gr.
Well that explains why some of my 1983 are damaged to the zinc.
Thanks for sharing
Interesting.
Good evening
1982 on the zink also pretty cool
Whats them worth anything ???
@@peterparker9286 no. The 1982 is the transition year from copper to zinc. The Philadelphia mint coined bot large and small dates on both types of planchets. The only type worthy of note is the 1982d small date on copper planchet.
I do have 19 of those Lincoln penny's from 1983 in weight them they weight 2.5
How can we tell it apart from a regular 1983 penny?
The only way is to weigh it. When I’m searching rolls of Pennie’s I always weigh the 1983’s. A copper penny weighs about 3.1 grams, zinc 2.5 grams.
Weights are different
I have on waiting that price to go up mines weighs exactly 3.0 gs
If it’s the first year on copper plated zinc then why is a copper plated zinc rare 🤦♂️
He meant they were struck on the old planchet. Not the new lighter zinc planchet.
Que buen Video saludos gracias gracias ❤tengo una igual una con ceca y una sin ceca one cent
I have 1pcs of 1983
What is not mentioned is the weight of this penny, if the penny was intended to have a mint mark. (other than Philadelphia).
I have one
So amazing how many people know more than the gentleman narrating the information. Hmm 🤔 I would think that those that “know more” would have their own video aka training class.
I really appreciate the support! In this instance, I mis-spoke. I strive
To put
Out accurate information and I pinned an explanation to clear up my error. Thanks for your support Virginia!
What he's trying to say is if you have a 3.1g COPPER penny dont clean it and get it graded by pcgs
Hello ! I just ran across a 1983 -D Lincoln penny it weight 3.10 grams . I also came across a 1961- D Lincoln penny and its weight is 2.75 grams would you have any information about it? All help with this would be appreciated thank you in advance for your time and help with this one!!!!
I have about eight of them and they always 3.1 grams
I have a lot of these
Copper coated zinc is still zinc that weight 2.5g....The real transition error is on a 3.1g copper planchet...This man is 100% WRONG and should not be looked to for any type of information on coin collecting.
I have one in my hand now
I have to go through all 80 coins
the way to test it is to 0ut a torch to it. if ot melts then it is zince
Lol, there’s a cool video on YT of someone torching copper coated zinc pennies.
Hey, I have that 1.
what action. where are these action done.
I have 1 but do not know where to sell...
I believe I have a sm date 82
Hello, Im Mike Duran, an I just found a 1983 no mint mark wieght 3.1 an would like to have it graded and put in action
I have one of that
There is nothing special about a 1983 copper coated zinc penny. It's the 95% copper 5% zinc penny that's valuable. Not to mention the 1943 Copper penny. that's the one you want.
How does one determine if you have one
I have one or more of those pennies
False. Copper zinc error is not an error. Copper would be error 😊
1974.
How can you tell the difference between these coins? Please comment back and let me know. Thank you very much for this video.
I have one of these coins
1983 copper plated zinc planchets are not rare! The 1983, 95%/Copper penny with a small amount of zinc is highly rare! This guy has confused himself because the Copper plated zinc planchets of the real transition year of1982 are and are not rare, depending on they Mint Mark & weight, and small date or large date.
now i m confused 🤔🤷🏻♀️can you please explain to me so the 1982 no mint mark are worth money but it has to weigh a certain weight how much exactly.i have 15 1982 pennies and by the way what about 1959 D
@@Love-hx6nb Read for yourself and Google 1982 penny errors
But copper plated zinc planchets are what '83s- present day are supposed to be. Dont you mean they were struck on leftover copper planchets? Perhaps some were hit with a copper clad after being struck on copper planchets, man that would be cool to discover, and some must exist. Oh yeah they would get it, just like a chocolate chip cookie dipped in chocolate

I have 1982
What ever you want to call it I'm looking at 25 of them
Was told that 1982 and older pennies have copper in Them, nothing in 1983 is that right?
The transition to zinc happened in late 82, so there are 1982 copper and zinc Pennie’s. No copper Pennie’s were supposed to be minted in 1983 but some have been discovered and they’re very valuable.
Anybody likes 1983 ?????
Yeah I think I would take this video down before your reputation goes down with it! I'm thinking you may have misspoken when recording this video since It's not the "rare 1983 copper plated zinc error" that you say they accidentally let get through the mint. When actually all pennies from 1983 were supposed to be made of copper plated zinc and weigh in at 2.5g. So with this being the case, somehow a few rare 1983 copper pennies were accidentally stamped on copper planchets weighing 3.1g from the prior year before the change had been made. And if you find one in........
@stevenvanover7650 - Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I did mis-speak. I need to pay closer attention when reviewing videos prior to publishing. 1982 is when the transition from mostly copper to mostly zinc began. Copper pennies which weigh 3.11 grams are the rare error. The Lincoln Cent in the video is actually a copper penny dated 1983 and it sold for $23,500 at auction. I'll leave the video up for an hour or so for you to see my acknowledgement, then I'll remove the video. Thanks again Steven!
That’s the meds I’m fine
