    I used to drive a 2015 western star quad axle dump truck just like this one. It had a 8speed eaton. Great power, rode nice,quiet inside. The downfall of these new trucks is you can’t turn traction control all the way off. Come to Minnesota this winter and try going up hills empty in neighborhoods and then traction control kicks in and you lose momentum and end up sliding back down the hill. sometimes you gotta floor it and keep the tires moving so you can burn down to pavement...we just need that option to turn it off is all..it’ll come in handy.

    • @Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix
      @Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah I hated when they started that. I work in the oilfield and before cat stopped making road engines we had C13 acert engines and when we turned off the traction control it would give full power. We had Pete's with eaton 8 speeds with deep reduction (blue side splitter switch). If we got stuck we could rock them out. I'd grab low gear with the range selector up (aka the hidden gear) which gives a range lower than 4th but higher than 3rd. I'd rock between reverse and low with the range selector up and had no problem because it allowed plenty of wherlspin to get momentum. We switched to Cummins ISX 13 engines and even with the traction control off it would seriously limit power. Just when you got the tires going and a little momentum it would still reduce power. Pissed us off. That and the load based speed control that cuts power at 1800rpm. Sometimes it would zoom to 2150, then you shift and it stops pulling at 1800rpm then you end up having to shift again because ypu dropped from 2150 to 1800rpm. Had the mechanics up the low rpm cutout to 2150rpm and it made a world of difference trying to accelerate and pull into traffic in the lower range gears.

      One of the big downfalls of an auto on dirt ima newer truck driver but have offroad experience from 4x4ing. Im always pushing max weight for my truck on road and off-road so if get in some ground that's not been compacted welp ima dig and have to force dump early since im not wiling to ruin this automatic by switching gears mid to high rpms I won't destroy my bosses truck. I rather a coworker give me a push with a skidsteer than me taking who knows how many miles id be taking away from the transmission and money in damages id be causing. These new trucks aint cheap when your writing the checks.

    Spent 23 years mostly loading trucks. The loader here is a Cat 980, I was in a Cat 988. This truck I can load. The shorter trucks, I have to get the bucket diagonal to get it in the bed. Loader operators need to be fast because we usually have a line of trucks waiting. Drivers get paid by the ton or by the load, so they want to get in and out as fast as possible. Gotta be fast, but also smooth. If you spill the truck driver's coffee loading the truck too hard, they get real bitchy on the CB. Even though that's a new truck, after getting loaded or dumping, the driver always gets out of the cab to make sure the gate is locked, the tarp is closed and there's not stray rocks on the lip of the gate. Any one of those 3 things are good for a big fat ticket if they're not right. BTW, Andre, loader operators appreciate it if you back all the way up against the pile. Less clean up for us.

    Andre, the dump truck was carrying 2 scoops of 17,000 lbs of gravel, or 34,000 lbs of payload, or 17 tons of payload (not 34 tons). 1 ton = 2000 lbs. These are short tons, or US tons. Overseas, a ton is 2,200 lbs, that’s why these are US tons or short tons.

    Weird that a smaller dump bed means a heavier, denser load. I used to think a smaller bed meant a lighter chassis and they gave you a smaller bed just to make sure you didn't overload it. I think that is the case with some small light trucks. In this case it is just a beast. Got to love a Western Star, definitely high quality stuff.

    What I haven't found yet is a description of how the Rock Free Mode actually _works_ . What does it actually do? It is a transmission feature I gather, does it just automatically shift between gears for you every time the truck comes to a stop, from 1 to R back to 1, etc? That won't really unstick it any better but it will make it easier. But maybe there is more to it than that.

    Adaptive cruise control down to 0mph, it also has a radar system and will brake for you if an obstacle gets in front of you, any time you are over 3mph (or 5?).
    I feel like this review (good as it is) doesn't entirely give the right impression of the superior execution of Western Star trucks. They are really like the Cadillacs of trucks. They don't just have a front tow pin, they tie it into the frame so you cant bend a bumper. They do a lot of special stuff with the frame and suspension that isn't obvious from a quick review. And just the quality of their paint work, the materials they use. They cost a lot more than a normal truck, but they will last forever. And last I heard they still custom built these all by hand in their own facility,

    Normally you don't put the lift axles down until you are going straight down the road and you have to raise them when you are turning at Intersections..
