Such a clever ideas using the penny rolls, I've seen people use toilet paper rolls and I'm thinking how many bathroom breaks do I have to take in order to make a bunch of these? 😂 Pape towel rolls work too, but these look like the perfect size.

wrap paper around a broom stick handle then wrap some layers of duck tape around the paper then just slide it off and cut to size. you can add in different layers of different tapes for different properties. eg foil tape that is wrapped in fiber glass tape is fire resistant and strong
Can you make a rainbow smoke bomb that switches colors? I'm thinking maybe you could just layer the dyes.

you'd need some divider I think to prevent the colours blending. Maybe one or two layers of cardboard?
Just divide it with flash paper so it doesn't burn for too long!
For anybody's that's curious or is making these here is some math that's not put into the video
Recipe within a gram btw for 1 pound of smoke mix
Potasium chlorate: 112g
Lactose: 82g
Magnesium carbonate: 72g
Baking soda: 13g
Pigment: 163g
1 pound of mix = 25 smoke bombs (penny wrap)
Average Total cost of materials (excluding: tape, fuse, wrapper.) = $147.86 (pigment = 66% of cost)
These bombs cost an average of : $5.91

Yes probably, the dye most likely has metallic salts which can be toxic.

Could you stack the different powders in layers? So that the smoke would shift colors, following a rainbow pattern, mid burn? Or would they burn too quick and just go black?

Be careful with potassium chlorate, often it's mixture are pressure/friction sensitive and you can have a sudden runaway reaction.

I believe if you melt candle wax and mix the mixture with it it will make it burn longer

Yes I've tried every trick in the book to make smoke bombs for a kick bass volcano but to no avail and a little crushed that I can't make this concoction. I shall keep looking but this was awesome thank you.

Hey Grant, what about compacting or compressing the smoke powder in the tube? Maybe use some sort of metal damper and press it as you go. You may get a longer burn time and you wouldn't have to worry about spilling the powder. One of your ingredients was an oxidizer I think, so it should work!

Potassium nitrate due to the fact that it burns at really higher temperatures, will incinerate the dye (giving us no colour as a ramification)

My question is how you get the smoke to be more vivid. Most coloured smoke compositions seem to end up very dull very fast, whereas others stay vivid despite diluting much farther. What's the difference if it's not just a higher dye ratio?

if you are careful not to mix the dye layers as you do it, easier said than done. most fireworks use sacrificial paper spacers or use paper wrapped sections

Great video, but.... It would have been nice if you found a substitution for the Indutrial Dye. This info is worthless unless a person can get the Industrial Dye. Is the Dye just a stronger concentrate of color? Is there a substitution for it? Did you pack the rolls at all? It looks like you just pour in the mixture loose and leave it that way. I do my own Fireworks Show and would like to start with some colored smoke and strobes, but I can't find any decent smoke grenades/Bombs to use. With most smoke bombs the colors are not bright enough and don't last very long. A reply would be appreciated. Thanks.. :)

You could also just tweak the mixture, another ratio of the chemicals can lead to far more energetic mixture... Unfortunately it would likely just result in black smoke.

black powder is the more common ingredient used in a model rocket engine, does the job just fine

there is a few metal like zinc,copper in powder form that can change the color of thermite if you use it in small quantities which is use on fireworks to make colors
