    Thanks for the great review. I'm interested in the CAME light, and I'm trying to sort out how much light they actually put out. At 3:23, you say "both of the lights are all the way up" and then talk about exposure being ISO 100, f1.8, 1/80th shutter. I'm trying to sort out how it would compare to an 800W tungsten in a softbox like I use now as far as raw light output. I know the softbox is cutting the light down, but I want to be sure an LED is going to be the same or stronger in output, especially if I want to diffuse the LED, which will obviously cut it down.

    Hi Tom,
    I'm considering going for the non-adjustable color balance model, because (stop me if I'm wrong) it would be double the brightness when set to full Daylight, or Tungsten balance, because it's using all 1024 LEDs. Correct?

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  Před 10 lety +1

      Not really. Somehow the double color LED lights are about 15% weaker than the single color lights. I think it's cause they use stronger LED bulbs. Also you have to remember that if you ever wanted to use the single color LED light in tungsten temp then by putting the corrective gel on it you're also loosing a bit of the light since the gel is darker.

    I know Tori the difference between shtter speed and frame rate. My qyestion was why you didnt follow the rule that says that the shutter speed has to be the doulbe of the frame rate..for example, if you shoot at 24fps you supposed to keep shutter speet at 48 or 50 ( in case you dont have magic lantern).

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  Před 10 lety +3

      There are no rules in filmmaking! That's just a suggestion if you want to get the most typical shutter speed. But you can for sure use whatever shutter speed you want. Just experiment and you will see yourself. Also when doing a shot such as this interview where there isn't much motion anyway, then you shutter speed makes no difference since you won't really see the different shutter speed effects.

  • @AVPROJECT1
    @AVPROJECT1 Před 10 lety

    Ok ;) I got it. Thank you Tom.

  • @AVPROJECT1
    @AVPROJECT1 Před 10 lety

    Actually I dont understand why. You change the shutter speed that is supposed to be double of the framerate. Is maybe becouse in an interview there is not a lot of action, movement?

    • @TomMakesThings
      @TomMakesThings Před 10 lety

      No I change the shutter speed which is HOW LONG each frame is exposed. Has nothing to do with frame rate. Frame rate is how many frames you shoot per second.

  • @Paulc771
    @Paulc771 Před 10 lety +1

    I see that you're changing the shutter speed a bit. Does it not need to stay the same depending on the frame rate? E.g. 1/50 for 24fps, 1/120 for 60fps etc.

    • @RyanPortsmouth
      @RyanPortsmouth Před 10 lety

      I know to get the "cinematic" look the shutter speed needs to be double but from this video I'm thinking that I need to experiment with this a little.
      I have found in many of my clips that I get more motion blur thank I would like, especially when handheld and never really thought of changing shutter speeds but I think I need to experiment a little - it would be great if Tom Antos or Dave Dugdale could weigh in on this.

    • @Bakamanzz
      @Bakamanzz Před 10 lety +1

      just depend on what kind of affect you want, i've found that going to 1/40 is acceptable but i wouldn't go any lower as it cause a smear/dream affect. It really depends on what your going for, like with many film making tips, once you now the rule you can understand the best way to "break" them.

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  Před 10 lety +2

      You can use any shutter speed and get a cinematic look. Shutter speed just changes the motion blur. Slower Shutter speed the more motion blur is visible. If you don't want to have images that look so blury that they almost look dreamy then the general rule is that you should double your FRAME RATE to get an average looking motion blur. So if filming at 24fps set your shutter speed as close to 1/50th sec. as possible. If you want sharper looking images you should increase the shutter speed. So 1/100th or even 1/500th sec. Of crouse if you're shooting at 24 fps you will not be able to get a shutter speed below 1/24th of a second.

      The one with dual color LEDs is a bit weaker than the other one, but the difference is not much. I measured and it was around 15% weaker. Not sure why. Could have something to do with the type of LED's that are used in the bicolor lights. Maybe they're more powerful LEDs that's why that light is a bit more expensive.

    • @DGrieux
      @DGrieux Před 10 lety

    great video. exactly the kind of video about lights i was looking for :) these Came lights seem great and would love to buy them. However, only thing i'm worried about a bit is ordering their stuff all the way from China. cannot find that much info about the company. it's quite an investment but seems like a bit of a risk to order from there with such little info on them. Anyone got experience with ordering their products?

      I ordered their lights and their steadicam ... had no problem with their company so far.

    Wow I wish I would have seen this a few months back. I bought Flolights for $450 each - they are plenty bright, but no option for: color temperature, barn doors, or gels. I don't like the way the skin tones look when they are directly pointed at the talent

    Seems like they all work reasonably well, although the quality of light is a little nasty on all of them. For softening and controlling them, have you tried Airbox Inflatable Softboxes with them? They're softboxes that work with all of those brands of panel, and priced to go along with these more budget LED panels. For control, they have light control grids available so you can direct the light once you've softened Here's the link to the softboxes that fit this size of panel. airboxlights.com/product-category/model-1x1-products/
    Tom, contact me if you're interested in testing one out.

    For truly affordable LED that are also very usable quality lights that can be remote controlled by included remote or with your smartphone, check out the Yongnuo line: YN-300, 600 & 900

      +Tom Antos (Tom Antos Films) haha perfect reply. Hey would you recommend $200 or less LED lights on Amazon. I'm a newbie, and trying not to spend too much money until I get better at what I'm doing. Any suggestions?

      +Da Brofessionals buy a couple can lights from home depot for 9$/each. use 100watt bulbs and bounce it off white walls, objects, thru shower curtains, etc. cheapest option you will find.

      +Blake Bauer thanks but ended up getting an Apurture Araman LED light. it's good for now, until I have enough money to get a light powerful enough to use as a proper key light

      $400 range is a low price. For my production company I bought 3 Dracast bicolor led lights and there more then $1200 a piece.

    Even the first light is a generic light with a rebranding. This is obviously a sponsor piece. Go watch some other videos to find good lights for less, you'll probably pay between a half to a quarter of what they charge.
