Big facts, street photography is so diverse in photography genres that you’re lowkey shaping your skills in whatever future lane you decide to get into. Street photography was the reason I realized I really enjoy taking portraits and from there into fashion work. It’s still a work in progress but I’m proud of the progress I’ve made because I love street photography. As I improve in other genres i improve in the streets too.

This video reminds me of when a IG person once told me that my feed was filled with too many different genres to be successful. I politely told him that I'm not trying to be successful, at least not according to his definition. I'm just having fun with my camera. Everyone is an expert! Street photography can be a great training ground because of all of the skills used to do it. Some of them aren't even specific to photography. Things like seeing and anticipating when things are about to happen translates to other genres like sports photography. I love that you are so diplomatic in how you tell people how you feel about these issues! LOL! Keep rockin' Dee!

Well-said. A street photographer is someone who can go out, into an unstructured environment, among unfamiliar people, and get things done. It really is that simple. The world’s best portrait studio photographer may be simply unable to perform outside the structured environment of a studio. The world’s best landscape photographer may be uncomfortable around people, or may be unable to hold a camera steady or level, without using a tripod and a bubble level. The world’s best flash expert may have unable to perform when tasked with using ambient light. Et Cetera.
I do not claim to be a “street photographer.” From mid-2010 to the end of 2017, I had a duty to photograph crime victims, most of them living, breathing, and traumatized. Some were still bleeding. (This was an added duty, not my “profession.”) I retired in 2018, after 33+ years of service, and am still trying to re-learn to even want to photograph people. But, as a public servant, I had to go out and get things done, which included being very empathetic, as necessary, so, can appreciate how street photography skills and talent would be assets when tackling serious projects, across a range of genres.

Going by your Africa comment, I agree and I am surprised by the huge lack of street photography from Africa. I have several friends in Africa, some who I would love to visit and I would enjoy exploring the major cities there, photographing daily life. Based on what I've seen on Google Maps Street View, the major African cities look like they have plenty to offer to photograph, especially since so many people appear to be busy working and shopping. And I see many interesting buildings, colors and textures. Most photographers when they visit Africa seem to only photograph animals on safari. Or if they do photograph people, it's usually just tribal people or those who live in extreme poverty. They don't seem interested in photographing daily African life of those who are more modern and somewhat well off.

It’s the same thing for Mexico when people travel. They take photos of certain areas but again, there is a suburb, hospital, mall etc close by they’re ignoring. As well as a lot of American immigrants living there.

I've always been a firm believer in doing what you love.
I started photography as a hobby, taking photos of life in general and of family and friends. Along the way, learned how to grow and be better with composition and along the way sports photography with whatever I have (never top end camera or lens tech). The beauty of the process is learning how to improve with the tools you have at hand.
Street photography is a niche that both hobbyist and professionals can excel at. It's the unpredictable reactive element of this that helps photographers grow and learn more about themselves and their own interests, as well as their individual photo taking skills. Sometimes, it's hard for folks to understand that maybe photography isn't about sharing the photos taken, but for the memories of the moment.

This is an awesome take. Have you ever happened to do any street photography down here in the Valley? Im born and raised down here and over the past 3 or 4 years ive wanted to get into street photography. being on the border, i worry about crossing that line of pandering amd contributing to the narrative of our area as being overrun by immigrats and drugs like Border Wars. I plan to do some photo walks in the neighbouring citys in the next couple of weeks. Is there any particular way that you found to transition from landscape/cityscape to people, living and shooting in some what of a similar community?
