One of the big factors with the Korean hybrids Is that they use a stepped automatic rather than a E-CVT.
So they drive a lot more like a regular car. If you're coming from a non-hybrid it's a lot more normal feeling. The Toyota products use a planetary split device that essentially drives like a CVT. Has a little bit of that rubber band effect. A lot of people don't like that.

    • @at9670
      @at9670 Před 2 lety +5

      Agree 100% .
Bought a Toyota CHR 2.0 hybrid with 184 horses, it is way faster than our last Diesel Skoda, the lack of gears makes the car really comfortable in the city, but horrible on the weekends when you are trying hard to enjoy yourself.

    • @kens97sto171

Yeah the CVTs definitely can take some of the fun out of it.
Although in higher power output models like the Camry or RAV4 they're actually quicker 0 to 60.
You can also sort of learn how to make them do what you want them to do.
On the Toyota hybrids they are not a belt and cone style CVT.
There are a planetary split device, extremely simple mechanically and very reliable.
Just change the transmission fluid every 50,000 miles and they will last basically forever.
      I've got a 2008 Prius with 390,000 miles.
Somebody in our local Prius group has a 2007 with 580,000 on it.
Do your oil changes every 5,000, change the transmission fluid every 50,000, flush your coolant both for engine as well as the inverter coolant side I think it's every 7 years.
make sure that the battery cooling intake vent doesn't ever get blocked or clogged up with dog hair or dirt or dust. And every once in a while every few years you might even pull the fan out itself and give it a cleaning.
Toyota has essentially been building the same hybrid design since 1997. Parts of gotten smaller and lighter and more powerful and more efficient but the basic design is essentially the same.

      @@kens97sto171 duuuuude, you are a saint Kens97!
Would you say that 5000 miles is overkill? I was going to do a service interval of 7500 miles because I didn't trust the standard 9300miles (15k KMs in europe) that Toyota tells you.
The petrol here in Italy is pretty good quality, but i drive 80% in the city with occasional highway trips. Also sometimes i do few miles and i feel like the engine never reaches the normal running temperature, what can I do to counter that? Do more occasional trips? Would i risk clogging the intakes or something?
Thanks for your insight, i really like the Toyota for the ease of mind, compared to our last Diesel Skoda, it was pretty impressive that you could get 745 miles fully loaded, and with a tank of 15.8 gallons of diesel at 75mph , but in urban driving the car got only 32mpgs.

    • @richardnavratil9661
      @richardnavratil9661 Před 2 lety +1

The upside of the driving dynamics with stepped auto is nice for regular driving, however, where it really falls short is the regen braking or slowing down on hybrid power (I suspect reason for some mpg loss over competition with CVT).
I'm not sure if they fixed it, but wife had a 2017 Niro with a hybrid stepped auto, great for driving and accelerating, but coming to a stop felt so unnatural and the car as if shuddered.

Purchased my Tucson hybrid SEL about 6 months ago absolutely love it. No blind spot cameras with this trim level but does have a physical volume scroll wheel. One thing I’ve noticed is that it’s pretty tough to get the car to achieve 37 mpg + if it’s not stop and go city traffic. Other than that only complaint I have is how freakin loud the backup sound for the car is. Really sucks when you’re trying to leave shawtys house late at night and you wake up the whole planet backing up. I know there’s a sound box you can remove to get rid of the sound but that’s super illegal apparently so I guess I’ll just live with it for the time being. Cheers Doug great review as always

We got one two months ago. SEL Convenience gas.
There is a "diffuse" button that allows airflow from across the entire dash, not just the small vents. I will admit that the performance isn't great, although that isn't the point of the car. Styling is definitely what sold me on it, in addition to a long list of features at the price point. It felt like it had the most backseat room amongst the rivals. Additionally, a week after, I loaded up a new couch for the living room and closed the hatch.

Just bought one these. WOW. What an amazing vehicle. I sold my C6 Corvette for this. In the low end this thing pulls. 0-50mph is QUICK. 50-70 is fine. 70+ power is lacking. But I find needing power-right-now more important at low speeds. It's self driving on the highway, I'm getting like 33mpg-ish. You have to try , to get get good mpg. Flooring it everywhere you'll get 20mpg. I'm very impressed with this car. I got it with a 10yr 120k mi bumper to bumper. I won't pay any repair until 2033. These are yet to be prove Toyota reliable, but that warranty means I'll probably be out of this vehicle long before I ever pay for a repair. My Corvette was a money pit. The digital gauges and leather plus self driving hwy with the styling makes this SUV feel like a luxury vehicle for RAV4 pricing. 8.6" of ground clearance (can't wait for a lift kit) with AWD means it's offroad capable for those biking, kayak, etc trips. Can tow 2000Lbs so a small camper with a couple bikes - yet it's refined on the interior. This will be my daily, my off roader, and my haul some toys vehicle while still getting great mpg, looking beautiful, and being very impressive for a Hyundai. Plus the warranty sells you on the reliability. Also the app being able to heat/cool the car on demand plus reminders if you forgot to lock the car is fantastic.

I recently purchased a 2023 Tucson Hybrid on 12/3/22. I loved the car when I test drove it and watched hours of reviews from CZcams. One thing that every single review failed to mention, is the issue Hyundai has with their panoramic sunroofs, as well as the small piece of glass inbetween the sunroof and the front windshield. There have been class action lawsuits filed against Hyundai because apparently these pieces of glass like to spontaneously burst. This happened to my 2023 Tucson after just ONE WEEK of driving. Walked out to my car ready to head to work, and noticed this giant crack in the glass, expanding from one end all the way to the other end. Car is back at the dealership right now, allegedly getting fixed at no cost to me. But some of the personal stories I've read online make me hesitant to believe that Hyundai is actually going to cover it. I'll come back with more details once I get an update. But just wanted other buyers to be aware of this common issue. I am not very pleased.

Doug has got to be one of the only CZcams car reviewers that NEVER opens up those big panoramic sunroofs. Noticed it first time on his Pacifica review. That van has an almost full length sunroof, but Doug never showed it. Looks like this Hyundai has a pretty big one too. It's a cool feature I think that can make cars seem more "open". You ought to show them off! Thanks for the vids!

13:20 Doug mentions the CX-5 as not a "wow what is that" reaction, is a testament to how well the CX-5 has sold. I recall it being pretty ground breaking, premium feeling, compact SUV when it came out 8 years ago. Still looks very refined for the category. But Kia/Hyundai have definitely been killing it with quality and value in the last 5 years, their portfolio is actually interesting.
Also, going to review the Niro N?

I think the CX-5 is the direct rival for this new Tuscon. However, the CX-5 is starting to show it’s age and I believe the model will be dropped entirely within the next year or so and most likely will be fully replaced with the new CX-50, which is a very stunning vehicle that I think will be a much better rival to the Tuscon

I got used to the screen buttons in 2 days. Its an incredible car. Smooth, silent, good pickup as opposed to the Japanese brands. Less fuel efficient, but much better than vomparable luxury non hybrid suv like the rdx.
And real mechanical AWD, instead of electric ones like toyota.
And much much roomier than the Rav4, venza, crv.
And you wont get 40mpg easily.
But the Hyundayi Kia the automated drving assist is 10 times better than the japanese ones.
    Its 2nd only to Tesla.

This review missed one of the key differences between the RAV 4 -- which I previously owned, but traded for the 2022 Tucson Ultimate Plug-in Hybrid -- and that is, road noise! The Tucson is, in my opinion, far quieter and more refined-feeling at highway speeds, something that bothered me with the RAV, which not only had a noisy CVT, but also transmitted a lot of road and wind noise to the cabin on road trips. THAT SAID -- my brand new, shiny, cool-looking, smooth-driving, luxurious Tucson is now back at the dealership after less than one month of ownership, and they are unable to fix the check engine light. The light came on at under 1,000KM, they diagnosed that I needed a "new" wastegate, which was funny to me because the entire car was brand new, and after they replaced the wastegate the check engine light came back on the same day. They now have the car, and I am stuck with a base model loaner, while they work with Hyundai Canada's engineers to figure out what's wrong with the car. Suffice to say, I am gutted to have traded my RAV4 -- whose check engine light I never once saw illuminated -- for this shiny, cool car that I don't even have in my possession because Hyundai cannot figure out what's wrong with it. Buyer beware.

The vent on the passenger side does in fact flow air all the way across, can’t believe Doug missed that quirk. And this is the same platform as the Santa Cruz compact pickup (UTE / SAV / Baja). The interior is 95% the same on both vehicles, with a similar grille up front and other common styling elements. The SC doesn’t get the hybrid engine… but everyone assumes it will at some point to compete better with the base Maverick.
