Surprisingly, I got a lot less backlash for saying Edgeworth is boring than I thought I would get. I actually got some people agreeing with me. Also to give the fandom credit, the majority of the people who disagreed with me were really nice about it.
I am getting comment like why I didn't choose Winston Payne or Nahyuta or any prosecutor like that, well I didn't think of it and I personally don't find those two prosecutors that boring. Neither are fantastic characters, but I don't find them that boring. My first choice for the "boring prosecutor" was actually Sir Zacharias Barnham. If any of you were like "who the hell is that?" my answer is "exactly!" I ended up not going with him because I wasn't confident I would find a code for him and I wanted to be bold.
There are also some people who are like "how is Edgeworth more boring than Klaiver?" Here's the thing, I don't think Klavier is boring, he's just mishandled. They could've done a lot more with him being a rockstar prosecutor and with him dealing with his brother just being sent to prison for murder. However, I still overall like Klavier.
Edgeworth on the other hand, is overused. You face him at least once in every main series game with the exception of Apollo Justice, he got two spin off games, and he even hijacked Franziska's plot because the writers wanted to write him more. He is one of the most pushed characters in the entire franchise; however, despite all this attention, he has barely left an impression on me as a character.
Seriously, I only use him in my Objection Lols when I have to for the most part. It's not out of malicious intent, but really out of apathy. Even in my fan case scripts (Link: archiveofourown.org/users/TheMellowFilmmaker/works), I included Klavier because I wanted to and I only included Edgeworth because of his importance to Franziska's story. I think I did end up doing something interesting Edgeworth in story regardless, but for the most part I don't find him very interesting. I know I'm a minority on this, but I don't care. You can't really convince me to find this guy compelling. The only defense of Edgeworth that I got that made some sense to me was that he was hot.

I also loved facing Godot, which it also gave franziska a chance to show up again, (but then Edgeworth was the defense so he kinda outshines her as "oh my God! Edgeworth is in Phoenix's roll!"

Edgeworth may be less conceptionally interesting and less interesting personality-wise as Klavier, but Edgeworth is more popular since he has a great role in the plots of the trilogy. His story in the first game is really well executed and compelling, him coming back as a more wise person in JFA who actually needs to teach Phoenix something is likewise great, and playing as him in T&T is similarly great fan service.
Because of this he is one of the most important and deep characters in Ace Attorney.
Klavier should be great. Both his personality and concept are far more interesting than Edgy, but Apollo Justice is just not a very well written game. So despite how he really should have a character arc, with him being Kristoph's brother and all, he just doesn't. His relationship with the core cast members of Apollo Justice is also stagnant, so we don't see him change. (this is a problem with the whole cast of AJ:AA - all of the characters act basically identical from 5 minutes after their introduction to the end of the game. This gives Klavier no part of the plot for the audience to see into him through.
And so he becomes boring as a result.
This is also why Klavier barely returns, he wasn't used in a compelling enough way in his debut game for people to want to see him in later entries.

Apollo's backstory doesn't even change. He just got stuff added onto it. I'll even simplify it.
Apollo's parents were traveling entertainers but his dad died so he was raised in a foreign country for his childhood until he placed into the care of the "United States". He eventually had a best friend obsessed with space.
The magician thing is more of a side note since it doesn't define his character.

edgeworth isn't boring, he's just overworked. he enjoys tokusatsu, he has a ninja phantom thief follow him around, he has at least three characters which are canonically attracted to him (granted one is like 80), but he works so much he's lost the ability to keep up with those around him.

  • @ImmaMakeYouSayMyDumbassName

I think the main reason I find Edgeworth boring is that he’s everything you’d expect the character to be. He’s got his tragic backstory, he’s super serious and broody, and whenever he does something morally questionable it turns out everything is fine and he’s practically an angel. The only thing you need to describe him is that he’s “the rival”.

Edgeworth's 'edge' was also sanded off in Rise From the Ashes. In the first few games, the most interesting thing about Edgeworth is his morally grey side. He used to use fraudulent evidence to get convictions for his perfect record, he didn't care if Adrian Andrews killed himself.
But I think Capcom saw how popular his character was and decided that he should be made into a generally good guy as to not offend any of his fangirls. Like when RftA makes it clear that he wasn't a corrupt prosecutor (which basically ruins the whole point of the plot of the first game)

So what got you into watching paint dry?
    Edgeworth:
Its sort of a long story, but ever since that day in the courtroom elevator,
when I used to beleive I had killed my own father accidentally by throwing a gun,
I would punish myself by spending any time I wasn't working by sitting and watching Paint dry.
Sometimes I would do this overnight if there wasn't a trial the next morning, but I think that was moreso to stay the nightmares.

Nowadays, i suppose ive gotten used to it. It's comfortable, in a sort of cruel way...
It always left me time to think about life, my work, and the people I affect every day.

I think he falls more into the comically serious as a trope because funny stuff is always happening to him and his non-reaction makes it funnier, but that kind of humor is a case by case thing.
Admittedly I don't know that I think Klavier has much going on besides being friendly and nice and maybe a bit of a playboy, he's like if the evil family member/mentor only messed with him on occasion so he didn't become mean and felt free to choose a different job and life path from what he was told he was supposed to do. I kinda hate when Alita is compared to the freaking Dahlia. Like, COME ON! Dahlia was set to be "the big bad" from the beginning of the third game. She was in three out of five cases, plus had a background one! She is demon in the flesh!
And Alita? Get serious, guys! She's one-time villain in one, mostly filler case. Give her some slack!!! I would even argue that she's actually refreshingly grounded villain. She has a set-in-reality motive, she's put up a decent fight for a case 2 villain, there was a few good twists in her(like the irony of her taking us as a defence attorney or that she was also attacked), there was at least some sympathetic parts to her, but she was extremely realistic anyway. Plus, i personally find her design kinda pretty. Yea, she isn't that flashy, but... Let's be honest. When was the last time our killer had actually realistic motives, more or less calm design and wasn't a total psyco or a joke caracter? You would be surprised, BUT THE LAST TIME WE HAD A VILLAIN LIKE THAT WAS NOT EVEN IN T&T, BUT IN *JFA*! You can argue which character exactly fits the bill, but you can't deny that.
Because T&T just mostly forgot about what a "realistic villain" even is! Dahlia is, ofc, out of the question. Luke Atmey was a whack. And Furio was an extremely comedic villain. Even Kristoph had a veil of misteriousness around him. Alita was the first grounded and set in reality villain *in quite a while*. But after the whole third game, which was outstanding despite its "unseriousness", people were just a bit spoiled with flashy, in all aspects, villains.
Be honest with yourself, people. You just bashing her after she failed your expectations to be "as unique as T&T characters, or at least to live up to Dahlia's legacy of «inocent outside, mean inside» shtick to a T". And after that you were disappointed. Because of your own and VERY hight expectations. Which WOULD be ruined sooner or later anyway! Because it's impossible to always go bigger and louder than before. One day, you would have to turn it down a notch. It's just so happens that it happened with Alita, of all people.
Let us not ridicule her as someone she had the potential to be, but appreciate her as someone she already is. And who is she? She's a young woman that desired some thrills in her life and a fat wallet filled with money(as .any people would like). Who was intelligent enough to manipulate not only her "husband", but his parents as well. Who can be imagined as a real person in our world unlike T&T cast of villains. And finally, who's perfectly played her past as a bit of the game's overall theme of "betrayal".
Let us just enjoy the game as is.

I think Athena’s character/backstory is actually interesting whereas there’s not much to say about Phoenix and Apollo’s. But in the last SoJ case (the one I’m on) they’re starting to explore his backstory a bit more so I’m excited to see what they do with it
Honestly apollo is pretty relevant in dual destinies or Spirits of Justice. You get more cases with him than Athena and an equal amount of cases with Phoenix
But yeah I miss the trilogy and AJ vibes A LOT. But I love the new games too. I adore all three of our defence attorneys equally and it’s so fun to watch Athena and Apollo’s dynamic together

Edgeworth is def considered boring in universe despite to most of us, him having the most in-depth writing in the games. Which makes sense because he’s one of the few prosecutors that don’t have an over the top personality or doesn’t straight up assault the defense the attorney.
I think people would’ve enjoyed his character much better if we saw more from his perspective ( which is crazy considering how often he appears in the games ) and not everyone plays his games, and I briefly remember enjoying the small snippet we got when he played defense for a bit and it turned out his thoughts are actually rather humorous.

In AA4, he's just a guy, he doesnt survive tremendous accidents, he doesnt have a tragic backstory, he is literally as clueless as you about the trends in the world thus not knowing abt the gavinners. The future games kinda ruined him for me, turning him into this extraordinary man that lost everything and moved countries and all that. Makes him less relatable...But that's just my opinion :)

Dual Destinies gave us some much needed Apollo backstory and personality that should have been in the previous game imo. He became my favorite of the 3 defense attorneys during DD. Spirit of Justice made everything ridiculous. I'm just gonna pretend all the Kingdom of Khura'in stuff didn't happen.

Alita's not the most boring killer imo; her motive sucks but it stands to reason she had more knowledge than everyone minus the victim on the situation, and confronted him about it; even got strangled.
That's a more interesting narrative throughline than "I bonked the protag on the head with a fire extinguisher so he gets amnesia and loses the case. Also I'm a con artist and the victim who found my phone is a cop, figure it out yourself". (Richard Wellington sucks. Even as a case 1 killer, that's notoriously bad, to a point where Jacques Portsman has more of a gimmick)
