  • July 27th, 2020 on Birch Lake near Big Lake, MN. Running a 1961 Mercury 700. This motor was re-done cosmetically to look like a 1958 Mercury Mark 78. This boat was built and motor restored by my friend Rick.

Grew up with one just like it! Nothing sounds or looks as cool as the Mark 78!

I love it, reminds me of my youngster years driving my dad's 1958 mahogany speed boat with a Merc 45 horse 58A, those engines sing at Full Throttle

    I absolutely loved the ride.
I laughed and shook my head when I heard one of you say it was a '62 Merc, lol.
I realize from the video title you really know better.
This'll be one of my favorites in my antique outboard play list, thanks.

    Cant beat the dound of a 6,7.5, mark 25, 58 A , 78a , .Merc 700 , merc 1000. Especially with stscks.

My recollection the mark series ended in 58 or nine.
Then the Merc series came out .
Went black in 60 i believe.
Mrs. KIEKOFER ( SP) TOLD Carl, it you want to make the Yower of Power look smaller, paint it black ! True story.

Merc Series started with 60 models. First black motor was 62 Merc 1000. Line was mixed, then all black for 64.

That's cool. Is it the Full Gear Shift Merc 700 or the Direct Reversing one? I recently saw someone redoing a Merc 700 as a Mark 58. I've always preferred the rounded look of the cowls. Mind you, I'll love my '61 700 FGS when it's finished.
