Im thinking of the Herbert Lehman high school in Bronx, NY as a good example of a high school built above a highway

It's evident that your cities are some of the most beautiful and detailed ever. However, watching certain videos, I can't help but wonder: how do they function simulation-wise?

Indeed, especially when things are stacked, it feels Japanese. Yet, the North American themed architecture makes it feel unique.
Put an outdoor gym in those awkward shaped areas you add the paths to make a fake park. Its only 2x2 so it'll fit in there amongst the paths, it'll give the fake park an actual in-game benefit
My high school, in italy is litterally above the main high way of my region
Fun fact: The Rockefeller University build an extension of its campus on top of the FDR in Uper East Side, Manhattan. So, this is totally feasible.

It's a shame there isn't a park/open space tool that works in a similar way to the farms and dump; where you can drag the nodes out to fill the spaces.

my tip for good grids is pulling the road all the way through the road you’re intersecting with, disable zone snapping and then the grid of the new road will align with the grid you want.
Oh I tried to do the same with my uni campus, to tunnel the highway under it but omg the process is so painful on CS2 right now I decided to loop around. Well, at least I will gradually develop the area when tools (and mods) get better

Actually the issue you might be having with the zoning is the lack of using "snap to cell length" (which I do see you using sometimes). It's I think called that, the second one, next to snapping to geometry. It snaps to every zone length so you'll never have those gaps between zones, unless your connecting in between 2 roads with the improper distance between them. Zone lengths are divisible by 8, so... 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96, 104, 112, 120, 128, 136, 144, 152, 160, 168, 176, 184, 192, 200, etc, etc, and repeat. When I'm doing roads I only have snap to 90 and snap to cell length, unless I need to snap to a guideline, then I have that too. And sometime you only snap to 90 and geometry when starting a curve, then turn them off and only have guideline to find your connection and geometry to snap to it. Without geometry when starting and finishing you can miss the correct connection point. That's what makes your connections and intersections look wonky after you started or finished them. You almost never need to snap to building, but when you do, it's there. I think the only reason for snapping to grid (the last one) is when connecting a road it keeps you snapped within the grid on the street you're connecting to, so you're not in between the grid markers. Knowing what everything does really helps building your roads to perfection.
Edit: This build is very abstract. I love it. Very creative.
Quick tip on building grid like road system: overextend road lanes at intersections when drawing them. That way it will keep the squares spacing equal. P.S. Great build as always!
