  • We need to talk about Moritz Seider
    #moritzseider #seider #detroitredwings #nhl
I created this video to show that Moritz Seider deserves more recognition for his amazing defensive play this season. Seider has been one of the best shot blockers as well and has made great stick checks to prevent goals. His iron man streak is now at 215 straight games. I predict that Seider will finish this season with 55 points. Hopefully the Detroit Red Wings will sign Seider to a long term contract very soon. He is one of their most valuable players and he is one of the best 2 way defensemen in the NHL.

Seider-Walman get the hardest assignment every game for a large % of the game, which often doesn't allow him to play offensively since he has to play so sharp defensively, he can't take the offensive risks that you might see makar or whoever try to make

The value of a #1 shutdown defenseman come playoff time is immense. Point production is basically a bonus, which makes Seider one of the top in the league at the position. Players like him should be perpetual Norris contenders instead of skewing towards dmen who score a lot. This coming from a Boston fan.

He’s going through the same thing heiskanen dealt with in Dallas. Doesn’t put up crazy point totals but he’s good at virtually everything. Mo is obviously more physical than Miro but from an exposure standpoint it’s very similar. Good on Detroit for the way he’s developed and hopefully will continue to improve.

For much of this season him and Walman have only been getting defensive zone utilization, they’re never out for offensive zone faceoffs - big reason why Seider hasn’t been putting up the points. half of me thinks he's also been coached to be more defensive and to have a pass first mentality. That combined with less offensive and PP minutes means his points have taken a hit. But low points isn't an issue if you're able to shutdown top lines and take pressure off your goalie on a nightly basis. In saying that it would be nice to see him having more opportunity to score and play more aggressive instead of hovering at the blue line.

That’s how Germans have traditionally been taught to play defense. I think it comes from a soccer culture, where a beautiful pass is better than a filthy goal, although probably also because European ice is bigger than American ice. I’ve been in the German youth system for the past 10 years, and almost every coach I’ve seen is all about pass first.

Comparing how he used to play in Germany and in his early days in Detroit, his game seems more stable, producing some points and definitely a good +/-. However, it looks as if he is (deliberately?) holding back to focus on what the coach told him to do(vs. what he could be doing). So his game often appears boring (while coaches would definitely love it!). It’s good to see him succeed, but for some reasons I feel like he’s holding back in some areas, not playing as good as he could be.

The theory is that with offense taken into account with the Orr Award, it will automatically be de-emphasized for the Norris Trophy, because they wouldn't want to make the two redundant.
