At least Pain and Madara were written to be antagonists that people can either relate to or understand why they are going about what they' re doing even tho its wrong. There is nothing that he has done that has truely benefited or improved the village. So whats really stupid is defending Danzo.

Here's the thing about Danzo. Yes he controls the Anbu, however there are two units in which the anbu are categorized. There are the Anbu shinobi that did aid with the fight against Pain, but those are the ones that work directly under the Hokage. Then there are the ones that work for Danzo which we know as The Foundation. Those are the Anbu that work within the shadows and deal with the dark aspect of the village i.e. Assasinations etc.
I understand that Danzo essentially did nothing in particular against the destruction of the Leaf, as we saw throughout the pain arc. But like what Pat said, he does his own things in his own way. I don't recall if they talked about this yet but i believe that they stated, the Hokage is the one who leads the people in the light, while the foundation works in the darkness. They are two halves of the same coin.
Also to note: The Anbu does have skilled shinobi, however, that does not make them the best shinobi. The Foundation collects children with unique justu or hidden lantent potential and houses them at a very young age.
Yea thats the issue with the Anbu. Ppl think The Foundation and the Hokage's Anbu Black Ops are the same people. When they aren't.
Nor do they want to understand things from Danzo's perspective. Which is a very harsh and ruthless way of maintaining control when words and fair tactics aren't effective. The Hokage's priority during an attack would be to save as many ppl and to defeat the enemy. But Danzo's job would be to make sure thar no secrets of the leaf are lost or that for example the jinchuriki isn't lost so that the leaf still has power. Make sure that enemies don't take advantage of their weakened state. Maintain the status quo basically.
Its like asking the CIA to defend the country rather than U.S. Army. Both are essentially agents of the government but their tactics for protecting the country are completely different.

Ironic that with the hatred Danzo has for the Uchiha, he is the one that handles things most like Madara did back in the day. Like when he confronted Ohnoki and Mu after their meeting with Hashirama.

People act like Danzo didn't help the leaf. Danzo character was necessary for the survival of the leaf village. The shadow of the leaf village was more than just danzo. Acting like the Leaf village didn't act in malicious ways for survival is pure fantasy. That's the whole reason the third hokage and Danzo (shadow hokage) existed. The third recognized the darkness of the village. The fan base is looking at Naruto the story in rose colored glasses.
